THANK YOU VETERANS

Happy Veteran’s Day

November 11, 2015

On November 11 every year in the United States of America, we celebrate Veteran’s Day, in honor of the men and women who protect us now, and in honor of the men and women who have protected us through the years.

Here is the testimony of Stu Weber, a Captain in the United States Army, Fifth Special Forces Group (Airborne), who served in Vietnam.

Military service, in retrospect, proved to be more mind slapping for me than four years of college, and more soul strengthening than the seminary.

Many years ago, as a young boy in a cozy little neighborhood in central Washington state, I learned a valuable lesson.  Our neighborhood bully, Jimmy, would never stop throwing dirt clods and using strong-arm tactics to terrorize smaller children.  We wanted him to stop.  Nothing seemed to work.  Until one day, we stood up to him.  Lying flat on his back, Jimmy experienced an amazing change of perspective.  He suddenly saw the logic of leaving the little people alone.

Bullies never seem to quit until someone takes the initiative to stand between them and their victims…whether the bully is Goliath, or Adolf Hitler, or Saddam Hussein, or the devil himself.  As Christians living in the devil’s kingdom, we must stand up to bullies daily…the bully called “the flesh”… the bully called “the world” … even the devil himself.

When the Philistines occupied the south ridge of the valley of Elah, and the Israeli army occupied the opposite ridge, each day the giant of Gath, Goliath, a bully, descended to the valley floor and taunted the champions of Israel.

Saul, the king of Israel, head and shoulders above his people, had no heart for standing up to the bully.  But Jesse’s kid, David did.  To David, it was a straightforward proposition.  For the good of others, the giant had to be called to account.  Packing his simple shepherd’s equipment, a slingshot, David voluntarily stepped between his countryman and those who would harm them.  You know the story.  The giant fell…the enemy fled.

Every sane person seeks peace. For that very reason, we must also be anti-bully.  On occasion, conflict…even the shedding of blood…is necessary in securing peace.  That’s why we need the military.  That’s why we needed the Lord.

On a day still in the future, the Lion of Judah, the Lord Jesus Christ, will don a blood-spattered robe, will mount a war horse, will summon His saints to accompany Him, and will take up a sword.  Then and only then will there be peace and safety on our beleaguered planet.

In the meantime, there is a place for the warriors of the military and a place for the warrior spirit among Christians…to let bullies know they will always end up flat on their backs.

VETERAN’S DAY

<PICTURE SLIDE:  AMERICAN FLAG>

We enjoy dedicating a few moments to Veteran’s day, taking time to remember those men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to come powerfully to our assistance.  Today, we remind ourselves of what is so special about this day we call Veteran’s Day.  The military will always occupy a special spot in my heart.  The men and women who stand on a wall and say, “Nothing’s going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch,” mean the world to me and to you.  They’re special because of what they put themselves through to become soldiers.  They’re special because they choose to defend those they do not know.  They’re special because they put their lives on the line every day for every one of us.  Here’s a musical tribute to the United States Military…a medley of the fight songs of each branch of the military.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Thank you, Father, for the men and women that protect this nation and every nation.  Father, as they protect us, protect them as well. You know where they will be today and we pray that You will be there with them to guide them through whatever challenges and trials they face on this day.  Thank you for these men and women, Lord!

We pray that You give them the gospel message…we pray that You keep them out of harm’s way…we pray that You do not allow our enemies to prevail over them…we ask You to bring them home safely…we ask You to protect their families, especially the mental health of their families who are waiting anxiously for their service to be complete.

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

Do You Realize that You are a Privileged One?

The next passage we are studying in Romans 8 is Verses 12 to 17…let’s look at it and listen to it together…

ROM 8:12

So then, brethren, we believers in Christ are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to guidance from the flesh—

ROM 8:13

…for if you are living according to guidance from the flesh, you must die; but if you are living by the agency of God the Holy Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, and you will live the resurrection life.

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Holy Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

ROM 8:15

For you believers in Christ have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

ROM 8:16

The Holy Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God…

ROM 8:17

…and if we believers in Christ are children of God, and we are, we are heirs also, heirs of God the Father and fellow heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Let’s take a detailed look at the verses of the passage.  Last week we looked in detail at Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 12 and 13…

ROM 8:12

So then, brethren, we believers in Christ are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to guidance from the flesh—

ROM 8:13

…for if you are living according to guidance from the flesh, and some of you are, you must die; but if you are living by the agency of God the Holy Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, and you will live the resurrection life.

As Christians we are to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called.  We are to live the holy life…the eternal life…the resurrection life…the ZOE life…right now, here on earth.

The matter under consideration in these two summary verses is “God control” versus our illusion of “self-control.”  We don’t control ourselves.    One item in the fruit of the Spirit is translated “self-control” in the New American Standard translation of the bible… Galatians, Chapter 5, Verses 22 and 23…

GAL 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,/gentleness, self-control; against such virtues there is no law.

I think a better translation of the final three virtues…faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…when we look at the Koine Greek of the New Testament, is faith, humility, and mastery (rather than self-control).  I know this for sure…there is no self-control in the body…there is no self-control in the rudderless, rebellious flesh…there is no virtue in the self-life.  When we, as believers in Christ, turn over our will to God the Holy Spirit…and choose to have our will match His will for us…we are under “God-control” … we are living the holy life…and that “God-control” of our lives will be reflected as the fruit of the Spirit, translated self-control…or better translated mastery… because when we are following God, in absolute obedience, we are mastering the holy life…not only in our own eyes…but also in God’s eyes.  When we reject the body’s attempt to control us through the clamoring of the lusting indwelling flesh, we are instead counting on the power of God the Holy Spirit to control us.

Now Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 14 and 15…

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Holy Spirit of God, these are sons of God (who have come of age).

ROM 8:15

For you believers in Christ have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

There are three key expressions in these verses…the sons of God… adoption as sons…led by the Sprit of God.

What is a son of God?  YOU are a SON OF GOD if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ!  As a son, described here as one who has come of age, not as a son who is still a child…you are granted a set of privileges by God because you are now of an age where you can handle them.

Do you realize that you are a privileged one?

You have a position with God.  Said another way, you are no longer merely considered to be in the likeness of servants, as children are considered to be.  Galatians, Chapter 4, Verses 1 to 7 explain it this way…

GAL 4:1

Now I say, as long as the heir (a believer in Christ) is a child, he does not differ at all from a household slave although he is owner of everything…

GAL 4:2

…but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.

GAL 4:3

So also, while we were children, we were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world (like religion).

GAL 4:4

But when the fullness of the time came (when the time was right as set by the father), God the Father sent forth His Son (the Lord), born of a woman (taking on the form of true humanity), born under the Mosaic Law (to fulfill it)…

GAL 4:5

…so that the Lord Jesus Christ might redeem (purchase from slavery) those who were under the Mosaic Law (enslaved by its system of rules), that we (who were purchased from slavery) might receive the adoption privileges as adult sons.

GAL 4:6

Because you are sons, God the Father has sent forth God the Holy Spirit of His Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

GAL 4:7

Therefore you (believer in Christ) are no longer a slave, but a you are a son of God; and if you are a son of God, and you are, then you are an heir of God through the agency of God the Father.

After a quick music break we’ll see exactly what this is telling us.

TODAY’S STUDY

Do You Realize that You are a Privileged One?

Welcome back!  Galatians, Chapter 4, beginning at Verse 1…

GAL 4:1

Now I say, as long as the heir (a believer in Christ) is a child, he does not differ at all from a household slave although he is owner of everything…

GAL 4:2

…but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.

When we are children, even if we are the heirs of the household, we are obliged to follow rules, to obey parents, to obey teachers, and to obey guardians, and we have neither the ability nor the privilege of making our own decisions.  Others are controlling us until we are mature enough to make our own decisions.  Galatians, Chapter 4, Verse 3…

GAL 4:3

So also, while we were children, we were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world (like religion).

The “elemental things of the world” is a reference to things like religious dogma.  Often, as children, our parents beliefs are inflicted on us…in short…children are the salves of their parents in a sense…and often children feel that way because they genuinely don’t have the privilege of doing as they please.  They’re just not capable.  Galatians, Chapter 4, Verse 4…

You are sons of God…that’s the first expression.  “Adoption as adult sons” is the second expression…it’s a commentary on the relationship a believer in Christ has with God.  When a person was adopted as an adult son in this era in Rome, it was apparent to everyone that this son was not born of the parents…this adoption was a legal designation.

In relationship, adoption made the adopted son one with the parent.  The adult son could act and decide as if he was the parent…the adopted son had the right to all things that are the parent’s…the burdens and the blessings.  SO it is for those of us who are in union with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Galatians, Chapter 4, Verse 6…

GAL 4:6

Because you are sons, God the Father has sent forth God the Holy Spirit of His Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

The entire Trinity is involved in your salvation…the Father…the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Throughout my Christian life, I never liked saying the last part of this verse…“crying, Abba! Father!”  It’s just not something I would ever say.  But I get the meaning.  Again…it goes to the idea of relationship.

The Jews of the Old Testament referred to God as Yahweh.  They considered His name too sacred to even pronounce.  This legalistic approach to the relationship with God indicated exactly how the Jews of this age felt about God… they were intimidated by Him, not intimate with Him.  Often, children are like that.  If you ever hear a child say, “If I get caught doing this my parents will kill me!” … then you know that the child does not have a very good relationship with the parent.  That’s fear…not respect.

When a relationship is great, you readily say the parent’s name.  That’s the relationship that is in view for Church Age believers in Christ.  We have a relationship with God that is so wonderful that we can run to Him and leap into His loving, outstretched arms and yell, “Daddy!”  “Abba!”  “Boompa!”  Whatever our term of affection is.  Galatians, Chapter 4, Verse 7…

GAL 4:7

Therefore you (as a believer in Christ) are no longer a slave, but a you are a son of God; and if you are a son of God, and you are, then you are an heir of God through the agency of God the Father.

Because you are adopted, you are a son…because you are a son, you are an heir…Second Peter, Chapter 1, Verses 3 and 4…

2PE 1:3

…seeing that the Lord’s divine power (omnipotence) has granted to us everything pertaining to everyday life and godliness (the resurrection life…our spiritual life), through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

2PE 1:4

For by the Lord’s grace and goodness He has granted to us believers in Christ His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature (an endowment)…

As sons, we are an exact reflection of the God who is our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Reviewing Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 12 and 15…

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Holy Spirit of God, these are sons of God (who have come of age).

ROM 8:15

For you believers in Christ have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

Do you realize that you are a privileged one?

As we endeavor to life the holy life…we are to be led by the Spirit…the third expression in this part of the passage.  WE are comforted knowing that we are to relax and to follow the leader, God the Holy Spirit as He unveils to us all of the magnificent blessing that are ours…sonship… adoption… heirship.  God has marvelous plans for His privileged ones.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

ACT 4:12

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given to mankind by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”

LUK 19:10

“For the Son of Man (the Lord Jesus Christ) has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
