TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Why Do the Jews Have to Be Heartbreakers?

Today we begin our verse-by-verse study of the first passage of Romans, Chapter 9, a passage that extends from Verse 1 to Verse 5…the apostle Paul speaks from a broken heart…

ROMANS 9:1

I am telling the truth in Christ…I am not lying…my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit…

ROMANS 9:2

…that I keep on having great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart.

ROMANS 9:3

For if I could wish that I myself were accursed…separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh…

ROMANS 9:4

…the kinsmen who are Israelites…to whom belongs the adoption as sons…and the glory…and the covenants …and the giving of the Mosaic Law…and the temple service…and the promises…

ROMANS 9:5

…whose are the fathers…and from whom came the Christ…according to the flesh, who is the One over all…THE Sovereign God…eternally blessed forever. Amen.

Welcome to a place where in today’s lesson we’ll see just what Paul’s “kinsmen according to the flesh,” the Jews, did to break his heart.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Father…today we pray for those who are suffering…thank you for being there for those for whom the pain of their cross is unbearable…thank you for being there for those whose burden, perhaps a burden of their own making, is one where there seems to be no end in sight… thank you for being there for those for whom the idea of being in control of their lives is a fleeting memory…for those, Father, who are experiencing the tribulations You allow that build endurance and perseverance and proven character.

Give them Your peace without disrupting their lessons Father…show them they are not alone…answer their prayers…remind them that you are always close to us in our time of need just as You promise…heal their broken hearts and restore their crushed spirits…deliver them to healing and give them a break…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...

Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Why Do the Jews Have to Be Heartbreakers?

There is a song made popular by Dionne Warwick called Heartbreaker…she is singing the song to a lost love.  As you listen to a part of it…I want you to imagine that this is a song the Lord Jesus Christ is singing to the Jews…

HEARTBREAKER

I’ve got to say it and it’s hard for me…

You got me crying like I thought I would never be…

Love is believing…but you let me down…

How can I love you when you ain’t around?

HEARTBREAKER

And I…get to the morning and you never call…

Love should be everything or not at all…

And it don’t matter…whatever you do…

I made a life out of loving you…

HEARTBREAKER

Only to find any dream that I follow is dying…

I’m crying in the rain…

I could be searching my world for a love everlasting…

Feeling no pain…when will we meet again?

HEARTBREAKER

Why do you have to be a heartbreaker?

Is it a lesson that I never knew?

Gotta get out of the spell that I’m under…

My love for you!

HEARTBREAKER

Why do you have to be a heartbreaker?

When I was being what you want me to be?

Suddenly everything I ever wanted…has passed me by…

This world may end…not you and I.

What a powerful lyric in relation to Christ and the Jews…“This world may end…but not you and I!”  We know from our introductory lessons to Romans, Chapters 9 to 11, which is all about the Jews, that the Lord Jesus Christ has not abandoned the Jews…that the Lord has a destiny for the Jews…destiny…a predetermined course of events based on the choices each individual Jew makes…and a predetermined way He will deal with them…and we know His predetermined way is faithfulness…the Lord will always be with the Jews…the Lord Jesus Christ, our God, will always be there for the Jews…the Lord has mercy on the Jews.  The Lord says, “This world may end…but not you and I!”

We’ve all had our heart broken…and some of you may be going through

a heartbreak right now…a morbid realization of the truth of your situation… intense anguish…deep sorrow…and you may be suffering as a result.  If God weren’t perfect, He would certainly be heartbroken over the Jews… Luke, Chapter 13, Verses 34 and 35…

LUKE 13:34

“O Jerusalem…Jerusalem…the city that kills the prophets and stones those

sent to her! How often I (the Lord Jesus Christ) wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!”

LUKE 13:35

“Behold, your house is left by you desolate (abandoned)…and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord (as the Millennial Ruler on planet earth)!’”

In the future, the Lord will return to save the Jews, but for right now He is letting them experience the pain of their rejection of and their abandonment of their Messiah…the sin of independence.  If God were not perfect, it would hurt God’s heart when we sin because He knows what sin does to us…it leads to death.

Parents know the heartbreak that is in view here.  There are times when our children are walking the wrong path and we know it…and maybe we know it because we have been on the same path and we know where the path leads…and maybe it grieves us that our offspring are not taking advice from anyone sane during the time when they are walking the wrong path.  And it just hurts us to see them suffer.  Sometimes it hurts us when we have to watch ourselves have to lie in the bed we have made for ourselves.  These are the thoughts…these are the feelings of the apostle Paul…in the first five verses of Romans, Chapter 9 that we are about to study.

The apostle Paul closes out Romans, Chapter 8 with these verses…Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 38 and 39…

ROMANS 8:38

For I (Paul) am fully persuaded that neither death nor life…nor angels nor principalities…nor things present nor things to come…nor powers…

…nor height nor depth…nor any other created thing…will be able to separate us believers in Christ from the unconditional love of God the Father…which is ours…a possession for those of us who are in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.

The apostle Paul has just finished eight chapters, in this letter to the Romans, highlighting the amazing grace and the tender feelings the Lord Jesus Christ has for the Gentiles.  The apostle Paul is Jewish, yet the Lord Jesus Christ assigned Him as the apostle to the Gentiles…God has a plan for Paul’s life…as we learned in Romans, Chapter 1, Verses 1 to 6…

ROMANS 1:1

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, and set apart for the dissemination of the gospel of God the Father…

ROMANS 1:2

…which gospel God the Father promised beforehand through His Old Testament prophets in the Holy Scriptures…

ROMANS 1:3

…a gospel message concerning God the Father’s Son  (the Lord), who was born of a descendant of David (the virgin Mary) according to the flesh (and His name was Jesus Christ)…

ROMANS 1:4

…the Christ, the Messiah, who was confirmed as the Son of God possessing the power of omnipotence by His resurrection from the dead…according to the power of the God who is the Spirit of holiness…this Jesus Christ our Lord (and Savior)…

ROMANS 1:5

…through whom we (Paul referring to himself) have received (an amazing) grace and (through whom we have received the spiritual gift of) apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith (alone in Christ alone for salvation) among all the Gentiles for Jesus Christ’s name’s sake…

ROMANS 1:6

…among whom you believers in Christ also are the called out ones of Jesus Christ…

God the Father has a plan for Paul’s life, and He has a plan for your life, too.  Do you know what the Father’s plan is for your life?

Romans, Chapters 9 to 11…which seem like a pause…a parenthesis…a deviation from the wonderful work of Romans, Chapters 1 to 8.  Yet if the truth be known, the Gentiles are the pause…the Jews are not.  It’s just that the Lord Jesus Christ is using the Jewish rejection of their Messiah, their wandering off into the lusts of the flesh, into the world, as a way to send a message to them.  The message of the Lord Jesus Christ to the Jews is that when He saved them from the Egyptians at the Red Sea, He knew that they would wander through the desert of the world for a while…yet He would be with them and He would lead them to the promised land…Israel.  So it is…the Jews have done what the Lord knew…and in the first five verses of Romans, Chapter 9, the apostle Paul reflects on their wanderings with a broken heart…and you relate to him because you have paved the way for someone you love, just as the Lord paved the way for the Jews, and you were rejected and abandoned…by a parent…by a child…by a friend…by a relative…by a love…and you wonder why they have to be a heartbreaker.  Romans, Chapter 9, Verses 1 to 5…

Amen.

Let’s take a music break and we’ll hear more about Paul’s heartbreak.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Why Do the Jews Have to Be Heartbreakers?

Welcome back!  Romans, Chapter 9, Verses 1 to 5…

ROMANS 9:1

I am telling the truth in Christ…I am not lying…my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit…

ROMANS 9:2

…that I keep on having great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart.

ROMANS 9:3

ROMANS 9:5

…whose are the fathers…and from whom came the Christ…according to the flesh, who is the One over all…THE Sovereign God…eternally blessed forever. Amen.

The apostle Paul is the apostle to the Gentiles…as a learned man, Paul would have to question the Lord’s sanity in sending him to evangelize to the Gentiles.  Paul suffered many heartbreaks in his life…he was not trusted…in fact he was hated…he had to be reminded by the Lord many times of the Lord’s wisdom in John, Chapter 15, Verses 18 to 21…

JOHN 15:18

“If the world hates you, and it does, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.”

God has an enemy, Satan, who is leading a conspiracy against Him.  Satan has a world system, the kingdom of death that is hostile against the advance of everyone associated with the Christ…against everyone who is precious to the Christ, including the Jews…

JOHN 15:19

“If (for the sake of argument) you were of the world, which you are not, the world would love you because you are its own; but because you are not of the world, but because I chose you out of the world…because of this the world hates you.”

JOHN 15:20

“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, and they did, they will also persecute you; if (for the sake of argument) they kept My word, which they didn’t, they will keep yours also.”

JOHN 15:21

“But all these things they will (be allowed to) do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.”

Paul is a Jew evangelizing Gentiles…and many wondered at the time, “Does Paul now hate the Jews?”  He certainly had reason to hate these heartbreakers.  Yet Paul didn’t hate the Jews…he loved them with a love, the depth of which is almost unspeakable.  Here’s what William Newell, in his commentary on Paul’s letter to the Romans, has to say to us…

NEWELL ON PAUL AND THE JEWS

Let us not be like those thousands of grace-hating Jews in Paul’s day who kept following him in his blessed ministry, declaring that he was an apostate Jew, one really denying the faith of his fathers, one who was bitter against his own race in order to curry favor among the despised Gentiles.

NEWELL ON PAUL AND THE JEWS

They spread the report that Paul “taught all men everywhere against Israel and against the Law and against the temple services.”

Acts, Chapter 21, Verses 27 and 28…

ACTS 21:27

When the seven days were almost over, the Jews from Asia, upon seeing Paul in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him…

ACTS 21:28

…crying out, “Men of Israel, come to our aid! This is the man who preaches to all men everywhere against our people and against the Mosaic Law and against this place…the temple…and besides he has even brought Greeks (Gentiles) into the temple and he has defiled this holy place.”

Paul would actually be justified for hating the Jews based on the way they treated him.  In Second Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 16 to 33…here is his treatment at the hands of the Jews…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:16

Again I (Paul) say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do think me foolish, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:17

What I am saying, I am not saying as the Lord would say it, but I say it as in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:18

Since many boast according to the flesh, I will boast according to the flesh also.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:19

For you (Corinthians), being so wise (in your own estimation), tolerate the foolish (the false teachers) gladly.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:20

For you tolerate it if anyone enslaves you, if anyone devours you, if anyone takes advantage of you, if anyone exalts himself, if anyone hits you in the face.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:21

To my shame I must say that we have been weak by comparison.  But in whatever respect anyone else is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself.

The false teachers that the Corinthians were listening to did not bear the mark of an apostle…suffering…even unto death…yet the Corinthians believed that the false teachers were associated with the twelve original apostles, because the false teachers claimed it to be so…the Corinthians were easily deceived by skillful oratory.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:22

Are they (who are misleading you) Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.

Paul’s credentials were impeccable.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:23

Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—(but if, for the sake of argument, they are servants of Christ), I am more so…in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:24

Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:25

Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, and a night and a day I have spent in the deep.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:26

I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:27

…I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:28

Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of my concern for all the churches.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:29

Who (of my flock) is weak without my being weak? Who (of my flock) is led into sin without my intense concern?

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:30

If I have to boast, and I will, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness.

This is the true test of a true apostle and a true teacher…suffering.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:31

The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying.

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:32

In Damascus the ethnarch (a ruler) under Aretas the king was guarding the gates of the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:33

…and I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and so escaped his hands.

Paul had every right to hate the Jews…because of their mistreatment…as did the Lord for that matter…because the unregenerate Jews were heartbreakers…yet neither the Lord nor Paul did hate the Jews…and in the first five verses of chapter nine…Paul details his heartbreak concerning the Jews…Romans, Chapter 9, Verses 1 to 5…

Amen.

Why do the Jews have to be heartbreakers?  They didn’t have to be heartbreakers, but they were…and we’ll continue to see their heartbreaking saga unfold in the lessons to come...

GOD WANTS YOU!

ACTS 16:30

“…the jailer asked, “Sirs (talking to Paul and Silas), what must I do to be saved?”

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

ACTS 4:12

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given to mankind by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the apostle Thomas, the doubting one, “I am the way (to salvation), and (I am) the truth (the Word of God), and (I am) the (resurrection) life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.”

‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation will be saved.’
