Welcome To

THE COEUR d’ALENE BIBLE CONFERENCE

of BARAH MINISTRIES

Rory Clark

Good Evening!

Welcome to the fifth annual Coeur d’Alene Bible Conference of Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, Arizona…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

A couple of weeks ago I got to do something that I haven’t done in a very long time.  I got to referee a basketball game, something I used to do regularly to earn money in my younger years.  As hard as it may be for you to believe, I missed a foul call.  One player had blatantly grabbed the arm of another player who was driving to the hoop.  I saw it, but I didn’t put the air in the whistle quite fast enough, and the ball and the players had made the transition toward the other end of the court.  The player who was fouled looked at me with disdain and yelled out, “Jesus Christ!”

In my mind, I thanked Him.  I was contemplating this conference and I was asking myself what the subject matter for the conference would be.  That’s probably why I missed the call!  You probably asked the question this way, “What are you going to teach?”  I’ll never ask myself that question again.  The subject matter for this conference, and for every conference, and in fact for every biblical lesson I ever write is the same…Jesus Christ…or as I call Him, The Lord Jesus Christ.

          THE LORD…JESUS CHRIST

We call Him Lord because He is 100% God

We call Him Jesus Christ because it was His first and last name as a human being…He is the one and only perfect man ever…yet 100% true humanity just like you and me

The Lord Jesus Christ is the One and only living God…here are a few excerpts from Isaiah, Chapter 45…

ISA 45:2a

“I (the Lord) will go before you and make the rough places smooth…”

You may wonder the significance of me teaching you about the Lord Jesus Christ.  Reflect on the rough patches in your life right now…where are you hurting?  What’s bothering you?  What are your problems?  The Lord Jesus Christ knows all about you…He has known you personally, by name, from a billion years ago…there never was nor will there ever be a time when He does not have you at the forefront of His mind…whether you know it or not, whether you believe it or not, He is your Creator…He gave you human life…and He knows all about your problems…He did more work for you last night while you were sleeping than you did for yourself all day today…Psalm 127, Verse 2 says…

PSA 127:2

It is vain for you (believers in Christ) to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for the Lord Jesus Christ gives to His beloved (His divinely loved believers) even in their sleep.

We love worrying a lot and working hard and striving with our ambitions, yet the Lord works for us while we are resting.

The Lord Jesus Christ sees it as His responsibility to make everything right for you…Isaiah, Chapter 45, Verse 3…

ISA 45:3

“I (the Lord) will give you the treasures of darkness and the hidden wealth of secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.”

In the context of this Isaiah passage, the Lord Jesus Christ did these things for King Cyrus who was not a believer in Christ.  If you are one of the Lord’s creatures, and you are, He has a treasure for you as well.  One of the greatest treasures God gives us is the chance to sit quietly in a room like this one, in the presence of others, and to hear His Word preached.  Listening to the exact thinking of the Lord Jesus Christ is a supernatural experience, not an academic experience.  Tonight, God will talk directly to your soul and He will “get to you.”  Even though in the writing of this message I had no idea exactly how these words would affect you…how they would edify you…how they would exhort you…how they would correct you…how they would reprove you…the Lord Jesus Christ, who knows all that is knowable, did know His plan to “get to you”…He will get a message into your secret places tonight and He will fill you with a wealth which cannot be measured in monetary terms.  Isaiah, Chapter 45, Verse 4…

ISA 45:4

“…I have given you a title of honor though you have not known Me.”

There are no conditions concerning what the Lord is willing to give you…whether you know who the Lord Jesus Christ is or not…whether you believe in Him or not…even if you hate Him…even if you are antagonistic toward Him…even if you do not think He exists…He has planned great things for you, and He loves you UNconditionally.  In other words, His love for you does not require a performance on your part.  He’s like the genie in the story of Aladdin, and He would definitely sing you the song the genie sang in Disney’s version of Aladdin…“You ain’t never had a friend like me!”  You probably ain’t never had a friend who truly loves you without requiring anything of you.  The Lord is such a friend.  Isaiah, Chapter 45, Verse 5…

ISA 45:5

“I am the Lord, and there is no other Lord; besides Me there is no (other) God.  I will gird you, even though you have not known Me…”

Isn’t it great to not have to worship 8000 gods as some religions do?  Our God is not a God of confusion.  And what a fantastic and powerful love God has for you.  My only regret tonight is that I cannot keep talking to you well into the wee hours of the morning as this evening transitions to tomorrow… mostly because you cannot bear it…because I could talk about my best friend, the Lord Jesus Christ, and I could sing His praises to you all night long.  I pray that the moments you are here command your full attention… even when you drift off for a while to think about the things you are hearing…even when you drift off for a while to think about your life…Isaiah, Chapter 45, Verses 6 and 7…

ISA 45:6

“…that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no One besides Me.  I am the Lord (the Sovereign God of the Universe), and there is no other (God)…”

ISA 45:7

“(I am)…the One forming light and creating darkness…(I am the One) causing well-being and creating calamity…I am the Lord who does all these.”

Welcome to a place where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy a private conversation between you and Your God tonight, a conversation housed within your thoughts…a conversation with a God who planned this conference for Your benefit, who found a way to get you here…a God who has plans to edify you tonight as you listen.

Welcome to a place where you can learn about the one and only God, the Lord Jesus Christ.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Thank you Heavenly Father for providing this place to worship You in peace…and thanks for providing hearers from around the country so that I can have the privilege of using my spiritual gift…and thank you for the organizers of this conference, John and Monica Miller…bless them and keep them and prosper them in ways that are important to them which only You know…

We ask you to “get to us” tonight Father…help us to hear You…help us to benefit from You…help us to heed Your counsel…solve our problems for us… provide for our needs…fill up our deficiencies…ease our pain… prosper our health…even in the midst of us trying to destroy everything we are asking You to build up for us… help us to overcome our humanness as only You can…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit in Christ’s name...Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

The Lord Jesus Christ

He is the Still Point in a Turning World

Thanks to my dear friends John and Monica Miller for making this evening possible.  A warm welcome to those of you who are part of the Barah Ministries resident congregation who made the trip north to support your Pastor and to socialize with your friends; welcome to those members of the Barah Ministries non-resident congregation who either live here in the Pacific Northwest or other places, and who enjoy our bible lessons on the internet; welcome to those of you who have attended this conference in the past and are back for more; and welcome to those of you who were invited here for the first time and who decided to come.  Thanks to all of you for being here when you could be someplace else spending your time another way.  May the Lord Jesus Christ’s grace, and love, and peace, and forgiveness be with you now and always.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the still point in a turning world.

These were the profound words of a man I consider to be a friend and a mentor, the Reverend Mark J. Link, a Roman Catholic priest who gave me a copy of his book of the same title in my senior year of high school in 1971.   Little did I know how profound and how accurate this title is.  Little did I know that this Roman Catholic priest was leading me out of Roman Catholicism and the poison of religion into a deep, intimate and personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ through the study of His written Word, that would eventually lead me to dedicate my life to the Lord Jesus Christ as a Pastor.

The Lord Jesus Christ is God, and He indeed is the still point of a turning world.  A hurricane is a perfect depiction of the still point…the eye of the hurricane is a place of absolute calm, even as the winds of calamity rage around the eye.  In the same way, as the world spins out of control more and more every moment, He won’t let us destroy the world or ourselves…in Him there a calm and a peace that surpasses our human comprehension…the Lord Jesus Christ controls the universe…the Lord Jesus Christ controls history…the Lord has calm on His lips to soothe your anxious soul as it flails in the midst of the calamity of the world…in Isaiah, Chapter 41, Verse 10, the Lord Jesus Christ says…

ISA 41:10

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Let’s face it…all of us come here tonight burdened and perhaps a bit afraid…probably most afraid that I might be a kook…I assure you I am…afraid of the things I might say…well the jury is still out on me, but hang in there!  The jury is in on the Lord Jesus Christ who is alive and who has been resurrected from the dead.

Maybe you’re like me…

I’m in the first year of the seventh decade of my life…at sixty years old, I am even more curious about what life holds for me in the coming years than I was when I was in my twenties…Frank Sinatra put it well in the song, “It Was a Very Good Year…”

IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR

Frank Sinatra

But now the days are short…

I’m in the autumn of my years

And I think of my life as vintage wine

From fine old kegs

From the brim to the dregs…

Perhaps tonight the older ones among us are a bit afraid, because we wonder, “What does life hold for those of us in the autumn of our years?  Are we to believe that we are ‘losing it’ as the world tells us?  Are we to consider aging as abnormal and are we to phone in our lives because the world tells us we are useless after the age of sixty-five…that we should just go retire and wait to die?”

Maybe you’re like me…

Maybe your children don’t talk to you after you have given your very lifeblood to raise them…inculcating them with the preparation necessary to thrive in a world where everything is against them.  They communicate with their silence that after all of my parenting work, that I am not worthy of being talked to.  People ask me, “How did that happen?”  I say, I don’t know…but I do…I am a Pastor…and this is among the strange things that happen to Pastors, all part of the Lord Jesus Christ’s education process for me personally.  Maybe you have issues with your children and your heart is breaking because none of the parenting manuals ever warned you that the trials you are going through right now should be considered a normal occurrence…not abnormal at all.  But you can’t get your mind wrapped around that idea because your current circumstance doesn’t match the picture you have in your head about how things ought to be.  Well the Lord Jesus Christ has news for you…First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 10…

1PE 5:10

After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in union with Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

Do you believe it?  Then relax and watch the deliverance of the Lord.

Maybe you’re like me…

Maybe you don’t spend as much time as you like with your spouse or your partner because your job and your lifestyle just don’t fit the “Leave it to Beaver” scenario…2.5 kids, a nice house, a nice car, and a white picket fence…an unreality that we are asked to believe is normal when it is not.  An unreality we are asked to compare ourselves to.  And when our lives are not the same as the unreality, we think there is something wrong with us when there isn’t.  We forget that the Lord Jesus Christ gave us a unique life.  I travel quite a bit.  My job takes me where it takes me and when it takes me…and I have never seen the story about how my life is normal.

Maybe you’re like me…

Maybe the love of your life, your soul mate, didn’t show up as advertised in the fairy tales…when you were cleaning cinders under the hand of the stern fairy godmother…or when you were the prince planning the ball…maybe decisions you have made in your lifetime at vulnerable moments have landed you in a situation you never expected to be in…and maybe he’s not Prince Charming and maybe she’s not Cinderella and maybe it’s been midnight for too many nights of your life…

Maybe you’re like me…

Maybe you’re wondering if what you have now in your life is as good as it gets.  Those are your thoughts and feelings in the quiet moments when you are alone…thoughts and feelings that you dare not say out loud lest you disappoint someone by telling the truth.

Maybe you’re like me…

Maybe your health is failing…maybe your body is creaking…maybe you’re not the athlete you once were and you’re coming to the realization that you never will be…maybe like an alarming number of my friends lately you have heard those words you never want to hear…“You have cancer”…and you’re afraid there are more days of your life behind you than in front of you…and whether you are young or old, this fear exists, and it’s real.

Maybe there is too much month at the end of the money…maybe you’re bankrupt and wondering if you will ever come out of it.

Maybe you’ve turned to the wrong sources for comfort, like sex, or drugs or alcohol, or people…

There is no comfort in any of these things…quite often, there is much fear because of many of these things…yet the Lord Jesus Christ is a compassionate God who knows you…who knows what you need…and who has all the things you need prepared for the asking…are you asking for His help in prayer?

Well let’s get clear tonight on what to ask for…if you’re interested in asking.

We start to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ by learning about the big picture.  So tonight, I have a message for unbelievers…and I have a message for believers in Christ.  All of you should be intensely interested in both messages, and not bored at all with either message.

The first message is for unbelievers, and the first thing unbelievers would do well to ask God for is SALVATION.  My question for unbelievers tonight is, “How do you get to heaven?”

Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 13 and 14 say…

MAT 7:13

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.”

MAT 7:14

“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to THE LIFE, and there are few who find it.”

Here’s a chart that illustrates the idea.

The Cross represents the Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on your behalf.   He is the still point in a turning world.

You were born with a choice.  You were born to make a choice between the narrow road and the broad road.  It’s your choice alone to make, and no one can make it for you.  Maybe you have had people in your life who want to badger you into making choices “good” for yourself.  They do that because they care for you (or they could just be nosey busybodies who like running every life but their own).  But your choice is really none of their business.  It’s a choice only you can make.

Here’s the problem…you were born physically alive…you were born spiritually dead…and you were born condemned to the Lake of Fire… because you were born with Adam’s sin credited to your account by God.  That’s not your fault.  But it is your circumstance.  And you are helpless to save yourself from this predicament.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22a…

1CO 15:22a

For as “in Adam” all die…

Said another way…

1CO 15:22a

Because of being born “in union with Adam” all human beings are set to die the second death (the Lake of Fire)…

Again…you were born physically alive…you were born spiritually dead…you were born condemned to the Lake of Fire…that’s not my opinion…it’s the Lord Jesus Christ’s exact thoughts which He expresses in His Word…the Bible.  You are born in a predicament, you are placed there by God, and you can’t work your way out of it.

Once you are made aware of your predicament, you then you have a choice concerning what you want to do about it.

God the Holy Spirit is responsible for making you aware of your predicament.  On the night before He went to the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ told His apostles what He was about to do to solve the predicament of all of His condemned creatures…John, Chapter 16, Verses 5 to 11…

JOH 16:5

“But now I (the Lord Jesus Christ) am going to Him who sent Me (God the Father); and none of you (apostles) asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’”

JOH 16:6

“But because I have said these things to you (about going away), sorrow has filled your heart.”

JOH 16:7

“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (God the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I go away, and I am, I (the Lord Jesus Christ) will send Him (God the Holy Spirit) to you.”

JOH 16:8

And He (God the Holy Spirit), when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…”

To convict means to convince someone of the accurate facts.  The Sovereign One, God the Holy Spirit, has the job of making you aware of your condemnation and the consequences of it.

JOH 16:9

“…concerning (the ultimate) sin, because they do not believe in Me…”

It’s important that you know that you didn’t commit the sin that caused your condemnation…Adam did it…so please don’t get self-righteous and say, “No Pastor…I don’t have a sin problem…I’m basically a good person…”  With Adam’s sin in your account, you can’t get into heaven.  And there is nothing you can do to get rid of it.  Only the Lord Jesus Christ can take care of this problem for you.

JOH 16:10

“…and concerning righteousness, because I go to God the Father and you no longer see Me…”

The only way to get into heaven is to have the same righteousness as the Lord Jesus Christ has.  He is wiling to give you His righteousness as a free gift for believing in Him.

JOH 16:11

“…and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (Satan, the enemy of God) has been judged.”

The Lord Jesus Christ’s work on the Cross on your behalf is Satan’s defeat.  The Lord was predicting a future event that was to happen the next day.

Your condemnation was handled by the only One who could handle it…the Lord Jesus Christ.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22…

1CO 15:22

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

Said another way…

1CO 15:22

Because of being born “in Adam” all human beings are set to die the second death…so also those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ are placed “in union with Christ” and all who believe in Him will be made spiritually alive.

Are you “in Adam” or are you “in Christ?”  It’s your predicament. And it’s your choice.  The Lord Jesus Christ is the still point in a turning world, and your decision about Him determines your spiritual destiny.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the narrow gate.  Will you take the broad road that leads to destruction or the narrow road that leads to the Resurrection Life?

All creatures are in a predicament at physical birth…Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 10…

ROM 3:10

…as it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous, not even one”

What does God do to get creatures out of the predicament?  Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

ROM 5:8

But God the Father demonstrates His own unconditional love toward all mankind, in that while we were yet sinners (ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers) Christ died for us.

John, Chapter 3, Verse 17…

JOH 3:17

For God the Father did not send the Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) into the world to condemn the world, but the Father sent His Son into the world that the world might be saved through believing in Him.

John, Chapter 1, Verse 12…

JOH 1:12

But as many as received the Lord (taking advantage of the free gift of salvation), to them He gave the right (once and for all time) to become children of God…to those who believe in Christ’s name…

Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

Acts 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.”

John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…

JOH 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the resurrection life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the resurrection) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

The Lord Jesus Christ paid with His blood to get His creatures off the hook.

Once the Lord gets you off the hook of condemnation, you cannot lose your salvation.  John, Chapter 10, Verse 28…

JOH 10:28

…and I (The Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life to believers in Christ, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

A God who never changes would never consider taking a salvation He has given you away from you…and He would never allow you to do anything to lose it.  Anyone who tells you that you can lose your salvation is a liar.  The apostle Paul says, in Galatians, Chapter 1, Verse 8…

GAL 1:8

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

What is the Lord’s message to His believers in Christ tonight?  Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 28 and 32…

ROM 8:28

And we know that God the Father causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

ROM 8:29

For those whom God the Father foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that the Lord Jesus Christ would be the firstborn among many brethren…

ROM 8:30

…and these whom God the Father predestined, He also called; and these

whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

ROM 8:31

What then shall we believers in Christ say face-to-face with all these things (in Romans 8:28 to Romans 8:30)? If God is for us, and He is, who is victorious against us?

ROM 8:32

God the Father who did not spare His own Son (the Lord Jesus Christ), but delivered Him over for us all, how will the Father not also in light of our union with Christ freely give us all things?

It is not unusual, that the Lord’s message to His believers would come out of the book of Romans.  Without studying the book of Romans, which is the fundamental book of Christianity, a Christian cannot truly know or understand God’s depth.  In other Words, if you really want to know God, you can learn about Him in the book of Romans.

Satan, the enemy of God has two lifestyle offers…the LASCIVIOUS LIFESTYLE…and the LEGALISTIC LIFESTYLE.  These two lifestyles can be classified under the banner of religion, a discipline which fosters an over concern about sin on the one hand, and an over concern with following the law on the other hand.

What is LASCIVIOUSNESS?

LASCIVIOUSNESS

A lifestyle inclined toward open indulgence in the lusts of the flesh, including an insatiable greed and a relentless pursuit of sexual things or the pursuit of any other things that are obviously not part of God’s plan for mankind…many of them illegal things.  It’s the lifestyle of immorality.

What is LEGALISM?

LEGALISM

Legalism is a lifestyle of smugly moralistic conduct which is often intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others…it is having or showing an exaggerated awareness of your own virtue…it is engagement in self-love and self-flattery…it is the thought that you are better than others, and that you are due a set of privileges because of it…it is the thought that God likes you because of something inherently good in you.  It’s the lifestyle of morality.

I spent twenty-one years in the lie called Romans Catholicism, over-focused on sin…living the immoral lifestyle…and I spent twenty-nine years in the lie called Systematic Theology…living the moral lifestyle.  Both are failures and fall dramatically short of the freedom the Lord Jesus Christ has to offer.  I praise God for letting me know firsthand about these two failures by letting me live them.

God cannot be truly known by means of the intellect…rather faith…the full assurance that His Word is enough.

In Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 1…Paul addresses a group of believers who have given up the freedom of Christianity for the slavery of religion…

GAL 5:1

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

Paul makes it clear that an over concern with sin is not the Christian Way of Living…Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 11…

ROM 6:11

Even so (believers in Christ) consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God the Father in union with Christ Jesus.

Paul makes it clear that an over concern with following the law is not the Christian Way of Living…Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 14…

ROM 6:14

For sin shall not be master over you, for you (believers in Christ) are not under law but under grace.

Those who have placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation are freed from sin and the law.

When we are overly concerned with trying to please God by avoiding sin, and by keeping the law, we miss the relationship God wants to have with us.  Because we aren’t able to stop sinning, and we aren’t able to keep the law.  Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 20…

ROM 5:20

The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, God’s grace abounded all the more…

An over concern with sin and the law quenches the compassion God has for us…Second Corinthians, Chapter 1, Verse 3…

2CO 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort…

Psalm 86, Verse 15…

PSA 86:15

But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.

Psalm 116, Verse 5…

PSA 116:5

Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yes, our God is compassionate.

Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verse 15…

HEB 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

LUK 15:20

“So the prodigal son got up and came to his father. But while the prodigal son was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”

THE LIFE of the believer in Christ is the resurrection life…best described this way…First Corinthians, Chapter 13, Verse 13…

1CO 13:13

But now faith, hope, love, abide in the sphere of these three; but the greatest of these is UNconditional love.

Faith…the absolute confidence that you already have what you have not seen.

Hope…the absolute confidence the Lord will always keep His Word and will always deliver you.

Love…the realization that God has nothing against you and that you are free to make mistakes and to experience life.

The best of all?  This…

1PE 5:6-7

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

He cares for you…God considers your problems to be His responsibility.

He is the still point in a turning world.  There are many more things I would like to say to you about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…but like the apostle John I must defer…John, Chapter 20, Verses 30 and 31…

JOH 20:30

Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book (the bible)…

JOH 20:31

…but these things that have been written are so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have THE LIFE in His name.

I thank you for listening.

In the morning, fROM 9:00 am to 11:00 am you’re invited to “Ask the Pastor,” and to discuss any biblical issue or life issue.
