Romans 204: Romans 7 - Welcome Home to God the Holy Spirit

Welcome To

BARAH MINISTRIES

a Christian Church

Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

John, Chapter 4, Verses 7 to 30…

JOH 4:7

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”

JOH 4:8

For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

JOH 4:9

Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

JOH 4:10

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

“Living water” is a reference to God the Holy Spirit.

JOH 4:11

She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?”

JOH 4:12

“You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”

JOH 4:13

Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again…”

JOH 4:14

“…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

JOH 4:15

The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”

JOH 4:16

He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”

JOH 4:17

The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband…’”

JOH 4:18

“…for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

JOH 4:19

The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.”

Now she changes the subject and asks Jesus, the prophet, to solve an ancient dispute between the Samaritans and the Jews…

JOH 4:20

“Our fathers (Samaritans) worshiped in this mountain, and you people (the Jews) say that in Jerusalem (at the Temple Mount) is the place where men ought to worship.”

JOH 4:21

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.”

JOH 4:22

“You (Samaritans) worship what you do not know; we (the Jews) worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.”

In other words, the Jews, not the Samaritans, were given the oracles of God.  Jesus continues…

JOH 4:23

“But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.”

Jesus is saying that the Church Age is coming soon.

JOH 4:24

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

JOH 4:25

The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called the Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”

JOH 4:26

Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

JOH 4:27

At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or “Why do You speak with her?”

JOH 4:28

So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men…

JOH 4:29

“Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?”

JOH 4:30

They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

TODAY’S STUDY

Welcome Home to God the Holy Spirit

The story of the woman at the well in John, Chapter 4 is a story of evangelism.  It follows another story of evangelism from John, Chapter 3.  The Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the evangelist in both stories.  The Lord’s subtlety in the two evangelisms can easily get lost in the beautiful power of the stories.  In John, Chapter 3, the Lord evangelizes to a self-righteous, legalistic, moral unbeliever in Nicodemus…a man who is a Pharisee…and in the course of the evangelism, Nicodemus goes from being really chatty to being completely silent.  The use of Scripture and not opinion in the evangelism silences Nicodemus.

In John, Chapter 4, the Lord evangelizes to a an immoral unbeliever in the

woman at the well.  In this story there are the subtleties that can easily

be missed.  The Lord is a Jew…the woman is a Samaritan…a half-breed… someone not considered as valuable in the times…in fact, she was someone to be despised. Jews and Samaritans did not associate with each other.  The Lord is a man and she is a woman. Public conversation between a man and a woman in this day was prohibited.  They were strangers to each other, and strangers did not usually talk to each other.  Worst of all, she was sinner…an unbeliever… someone who had been divorced five times and was now living with a man who is not her husband.

Whether He was evangelizing to the moral or the immoral, the Lord Jesus Christ valued them.  He provided equally for both of them at the Cross by laying down His life and by shedding His blood.  They both believed in Him, and He provided them both with His Holy Spirit as a pledge of their inheritance.  As we make the transition into Romans Chapter 8, we move into a part of the letter to the Romans that will teach us about our Mentor, our Teacher and our Guide, God the Holy Spirit, another One who knows all about us.  All praise to Him and to the entire Godhead for loving us unconditionally.  Let’s pause for a moment to take the offering.

THE OFFERING

Deacon Denny Goodall

We appreciate your gifts.  Because the Lord provides you with a way to be generous, you get a chance to give of your treasure so that others can benefit.  There is no greater expression of the unconditional love of God than giving.  Here’s what Paul has to say to the believers in Christ at Corinth concerning giving…Second Corinthians, Chapter 9, Verses 6 to 8…

2CO 9:6

Now this I (Paul) say…he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly…and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

In other words, be generous…the more seeds that are sown, the bigger the harvest.

2CO 9:7

Each one of us must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a joyfully willing giver.

God loves an attitude in you that WANTS TO give…not an attitude in you that thinks you HAVE TO give…

2CO 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed…

If you are benefitting from this teaching, show your appreciation through your gift.  Let’s welcome up Deacon Denny Goodall to take the offering.

OFFERING VERSE

GAL 1:10

For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

TODAY’S STUDY

Welcome Home to God the Holy Spirit

We now transition to the eight chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans.  Let’s familiarize ourselves, in overview, with what we are about to study.  This chapter of the letter has several parts…

PASSAGE ONE…Verses 1 to 13

ROM 8:1

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

ROM 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

ROM 8:3

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh…

ROM 8:4

…so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

ROM 8:5

For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

ROM 8:6

For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace…

ROM 8:7

…because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so…

ROM 8:8

…and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

ROM 8:9

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

ROM 8:10

If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

ROM 8:11

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

ROM 8:12

So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—

ROM 8:13

…for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

TODAY’S STUDY

Welcome Home to God the Holy Spirit

We now transition to the eight chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans.  Let’s familiarize ourselves, in overview, with what we are about to study.  Here is…

PASSAGE TWO…Verses 14 to 25

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

ROM 8:15

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

ROM 8:16

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God…

ROM 8:17

…and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

ROM 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

ROM 8:19

For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.

ROM 8:20

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope…

ROM 8:21

…that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

ROM 8:22

For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

ROM 8:23

And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

ROM 8:24

For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?

ROM 8:25

But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

PASSAGE THREE…Verses 26 to 27

ROM 8:26

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words…

ROM 8:27

…and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

PASSAGE FOUR…Verses 28 to 30

ROM 8:28

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

ROM 8:29

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren…

ROM 8:30

…and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

PASSAGE FIVE…Verses 31 to 34

ROM 8:31

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

ROM 8:32

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

ROM 8:33

Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies…

ROM 8:34

…who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

PASSAGE SIX…Verses 35 to 39

ROM 8:35

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

ROM 8:36

Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;

We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

ROM 8:37

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.

ROM 8:38

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers…

ROM 8:39

…nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Welcome home!  If you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, your heart’s home is God the Holy Spirit.  He is the One in whom we rest.  He is the One in whom we have peace.  He is the One who guides us.  Do you know Him more than just by name?  Is He your intimate confidant and the One on whom you depend?  It’s time for us to have the same deep, intimate, and personal relationship with Him that we have with the other members of the Godhead.  Welcome home!

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.”

JOH 3:36

He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the ZOE life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the Zoe) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father abides on him.”
