LESSON INTRODUCTION

The Lord Want His Believers to Live a Holy Life

It would be worthwhile for you to go back and read what you have been learning from Romans-Chapter 6 through Romans-Chapter 8.  Romans Chapter 8 is the third chapter in a three-chapter sequence that has been teaching us about the law, and about sin, and now, about God the Holy Spirit and the holy life.  I highly recommend this week that you just pick up a bible and read all three chapters.  Here are some of the things you will see as you read the chapters again…Romans, Chapter 6, Verses 12 and 13…

ROM 6:12

Therefore do not let sin reign as if it were still sovereign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts…

ROM 6:13

…and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God the Father as one of those who is alive from the dead, and present your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

When we, as believers in Christ are living the holy life, we will have a very negative attitude toward sin…and a very negative attitude toward the promptings of the flesh…in fact, we’ll have the same attitude that the Lord has toward it… absolute disgust!  Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 14…

ROM 6:14

For sin shall not be master over you, for you believers in Christ are not under law (or sin) but you are under the sphere of grace.

In the sphere of grace, we merely follow the instructions of God the Holy Spirit…which is the right kind of slavery…Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 16…

ROM 6:16

Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either a slave of sin resulting in death, or a slave of obedience resulting in righteousness?

I don’t know how it is for you, but sin is an embarrassment for me.  I think about how easy it is to listen to the flesh and to how easy it is to let it convince you that any course of action you are taking is okay.  Then one day you wake up and you have become everything you never wanted to be…and you can’t believe how low you will let yourself stoop.  Jeremiah, Chapter 17, Verse 9…

JER 17:9

“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?”

What if God rendered to us that which we totally deserved, based on what is going on in our hearts?  It would be awful for us.  Once we learn that we are totally depraved, then Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 15 becomes our mental mantra…

ROM 7:15

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

Unfortunately, all of us, as Christians, have had periods in our lives where we just let ourselves go…where we gladly follow the broken road…where we willingly succumb to the deceptions of the flesh.

God knew about this in eternity past…before we were even created…and He created us anyway.  And we while take comfort knowing this…Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 28…

ROM 8:28

And we know that God the Father causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

…we don’t take this knowledge for granted.  Romans, Chapter 6, Verses 1 and 2…

ROM 6:1-2

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

Sinning for “fun” is not the habit of the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ… it’s actually a life of contradiction.  While we relax in the knowledge that our God has everything under complete control, including us…we simultaneously depend on Him for the holy life, and we ask Him to do for us all those things we wish we could do for ourselves.

The Lord has planned a holy life for His believers…Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 48…

MAT 5:48

Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Welcome to a place where God the Holy Spirit can guide you into the holy life.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

You alone, our God, are the only Holy One…yet you have called us, your believers, to be holy as well…thank you for calling us to a standard of perfection…

Yet Father we wonder how we can be holy as you are Holy without Your help…and the truth is, we don’t have the will or the power to do this on our own…we can’t do it without Your help…but we know we don’t have to be without You and Your help ever…

So we pray that You show us how to be holy as You are holy…we pray that You make us into the people You want us to become…we pray that You tap us on the shoulder during those times when we choose unholiness…and that You gently guide us, in grace, back to Your narrow road…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY
Do You Want to Be Special?

I do.  Isn’t it funny though…the only way to be special in this life is to do what God asks us to do…total obedience to God.  In the first passage of Romans, Chapter 8…we learn that when we turn to God the Holy Spirit and when we depend on Him, He encourages us and instructs us on how to abandon the self-life…and on how to adopt the resurrection life…the holy life…and when we follow, that certainly is special.

God the Holy Spirit is the caretaker of our souls…He brings our souls from spiritual death to THE LIFE…and He is the caretaker of our dead earthly bodies until that time when we get our resurrection bodies which free us from the house of corruption in which we now live.  Our body, with the flesh in it, is dead to God and it has enmity toward God…and it is constantly leading us away from the holy life.  Often, we follow…and sometimes that is a bit disheartening… Second Corinthians, Chapter 4, Verse 16 to Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 5 say this…

2CO 4:16

Therefore we believers in Christ do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying (this body of death is getting worse), yet our inner man (the new self) is being renewed by God day by day.

2CO 4:17

For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison…

2CO 4:18

…while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

What we are doing on this earth…in this dead body…is not all that God has planned for those who love Him.  Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verses 1 to 5…

2CO 5:1

For we know that if the earthly tent (this dead body) which is our house is torn down (by physical death), we have a building from God (a resurrection body), a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

2CO 5:2

For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven…

Being in this body, for the Christian, is a constant state of humiliation…

2CO 5:3

…inasmuch as we, having put on the resurrection body, will not be found naked.

2CO 5:4

For indeed while we are in this tent (this dead body), we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.

2CO 5:5

Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God the Father, who gave to us God the Holy Spirit as a pledge (of our future inheritance).

God the Holy Spirit will make our bodies alive when the Lord Jesus Christ returns for His Church Age believers.  There will be no more crying…no more pain…no more suffering…no more trials…no more humiliation…the old things will completely pass away.

The next passage we will study in Romans 8 is in Verses 12 to 17…let’s look at it and listen to it together…

ROM 8:12

So then, brethren, we believers in Christ are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—

ROM 8:13

…for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if you are living by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Holy Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

ROM 8:15

For you believers in Christ have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

ROM 8:16

The Holy Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God…

ROM 8:17

…and if we are children of God, and we are, we are heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Now let’s begin our look at the details of the passage.

The first two verses are summary verses of all that we have learned in the first passage…Verse 12 starts with “so then” … words that indicate summary…because these two verses begin a summary of all the things mentioned all the way back to Romans 6, but especially from Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 24 through Romans, Chapter 8 Verse 11…

ROM 8:12

So then, brethren, we believers in Christ are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to guidance from the flesh—

ROM 8:13

…for if you are living according to guidance from the flesh, you must die; but if you are living by the agency of God the Holy Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, and you will live the resurrection life.

Believers in Christ are to live a holy life, walking in a manner worthy of the calling to which they have been called, and are to walk away from this dead body and its flesh that are still clamoring for our attention and still seeking to rule us.  When you think about it, the body and the flesh are like Satan.  First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

1PE 5:8

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

The body and its flesh clamor like a roaring lion to distract you from the calm and the enjoyment of the spiritual life.  And you know the funny thing?  When you give in to it, they aren't satisfied!  They want more!  And they keep at you.  Nothing you do satisfies them because their lust is insatiable! First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 9…

1PE 5:9

But resist the devil, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

The body and the flesh know they have no claims over you…the Cross cancelled the power of the law and sin and death…yet they continue to seek disruption of your life…to lead you to a life filled with death…the deaths coming when we are disobedient to Christ and have to suffer the consequences of our bad choices.

TODAY’S STUDY
Do You Want to Be Special?

As believers in Christ we have so many things to be thankful for…and as we enter November, the month of thanksgiving, we call these things to mind by way of reminder…a great part of the summary of Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 12 and 13.  The powers of several biblical truths are to be at the forefront of our minds and our lives.

We are in union with Christ…First Corinthians, Chapter 1, Verse 30…

1CO 1:30

But by God the Father’s doing you are in union with Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption…

When we are living the holy life, by following the direction of God the Holy Spirit, our lives reflect wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption…all gifts from our almighty God.  Do you want to be special?  If you want to be special, you simply reflect the teachings of your God.

As believers in Christ, we are identified with everything that is Christ’s.  Galatians, Chapter 3, Verse 27….

GAL 3:27

For all of you who were baptized into union with Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

We share in everything associated with Christ…His crucifixion, His death, His burial, His resurrection from the dead, and His ascension into heaven.  All of these things are the magnificent parts of the Christian experience.  When we are clothed with Christ, we reflect Christ.

Once we are “in union with Christ,” our union “in Adam” is broken… Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verses 1 to 5…

EPH 2:1

And you were spiritually dead in your trespasses and sins…

EPH 2:2

…in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

EPH 2:3

Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

EPH 2:4

But God the Father, being rich in mercy, because of His great unconditional love with which He loved us…

EPH 2:5

…even when we were dead in our transgressions (while we were His enemies), made us alive together with Christ (by the free gift of grace you have been saved)…

We give thanks that we are new creatures…Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

2CO 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in union with Christ, and all believers in Christ are, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

We share in a new resurrection life with Christ…John, Chapter 10, Verse 10…

JOH 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (the Lord Jesus Christ) came that believers in Christ may have THE RESURRECTION LIFE, and have it abundantly.

We are indwelled by the entire Trinity…Colossians, Chapter 1, Verses 25 to 27…

COL 1:25

Of this church I (Paul) was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God…

COL 1:26

…that is, the preaching concerning the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to God the Father’s Church Age saints…

COL 1:27

…to whom God willed to make known what are the glorious riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ indwelling you, the hope of glory.

Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 9…

ROM 8:9

However, you believers in Christ are not in the flesh but you are in the Spirit, if indeed the Holy Spirit of God dwells in you (and He does).

The indwelling of the Trinity is like earnest money in a real estate transaction…it is a guarantee that what is promised by God…our purchase from slavery, our redemption, and our salvation…will be fulfilled.

Sin is no longer master over believers in Christ…Romans Chapter 6, Verse 11…

ROM 6:11

Even so (believers in Christ), consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God the Father, in union with Christ Jesus.

We have a guarantee of eternal security…John, Chapter 10, Verses 27 and 28…

JOH 10:27

My sheep hear My voice, and I (the Lord Jesus Christ) know them, and they follow Me…

JOH 10:28

…and I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life (the resurrection life) to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

Do you want to be special?

We have a guarantee of eternal life in heaven…Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

2CO 5:8

…we believers in Christ are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home face-to-face with the Lord.

If you want to be special, in your new creature you are ignoring death… ignoring sin…ignoring the law…ignoring the body…ignoring the flesh… and following God the Holy Spirit.  Why?  Because we owe God a debt for all these amazing things He has done for us free of charge.  Yet God never mentions our debt.  Instead he warns us and reminds us that we owe no debt to the body or to the flesh. God is graciousness all the way.  We are delivered.

We are trichotomous beings…we have a body, a soul, and a spirit…we are to grow in spirit…we are to enjoy the protection of our souls by the indwelling Trinity…we are to give no ear to the flesh that we would obey its lusts.

When we listen to the flesh we are ignoring the Spirit…we are turning our attention away from God to self…we are tuning the Spirit out (turning away from WGOD) and we are tuning in to the dead flesh (at KCOS)…when we listen to the flesh we refuse to be led by God the Holy Spirit.  We volunteer to lead ourselves.  If you are going to live the holy life, you must not let your body and the flesh rule you.

Romans Chapter 8 seeks to teach Christians three important lessons.

THE LESSONS OF ROMANS 8

Your body … and “the flesh” … are God’s way of teaching you about the old-self life.  Nothing good dwells in “the flesh” … “the flesh” hates God, hates you, hates everything precious to you, and seeks to destroy all of them.

THE LESSONS OF ROMANS 8

Your body … and “the flesh” … commit personal sins…and through sin you are to learn to hate sin…in fact, to abhor it…because it interferes with your relationship with God and with your serenity…your peace of mind.

THE LESSONS OF ROMANS 8

Relying on…depending on God the Holy Spirit is your only way out of “the flesh” dilemma.  Your will is not stronger than “the flesh” … but God the Holy Spirit IS more powerful than “the flesh.”

Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

GAL 5:17

For the flesh sets its desire against God the Holy Spirit, and God the Holy Spirit sets His desire against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

So we are to depend on God the Holy Spirit…we have no power on our own…but we live a holy life when we say “sick ‘em” to God the Holy Spirit.

Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 13…the second part…

ROM 8:13b

…if you are living, by the agency of God the Holy Spirit, you are calling on Him to be putting to death the deeds of the body, and by this dependence, you will live.

A fruit of God the Holy Spirit is self-control.  When you depend on God the Holy Spirit for everything, He controls the self!  Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit.  Galatians, Chapter 5, Verses 22 and 23…

GAL 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Paul highlights the holy life…First Corinthians, Chapter 6, Verses 12 to 20…

1CO 6:12

All things are lawful (permissible) for me, but not all things (permissible) are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

We are not to be slaved, controlled by something or someone other than God the Holy Spirit.  When we allow other things to master us, we hate ourselves.

Do you want to be special?  Then don’t hate yourself.

1CO 6:13

Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but the body is for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

The slogans of the day didn’t tell the truth.  (It’s all good)

1CO 6:14

Now God the Father has not only raised the Lord from the dead, but will also raise us up from the dead through His power.

1CO 6:15

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ (in union with Him)?  Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!

1CO 6:16

Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.”

1CO 6:17

But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

1CO 6:18

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.

Do you want to be special?  Then don’t hate yourself.

1CO 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is indwelling you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

1CO 6:20

For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

Do you want to be special?  Glorifying God in your body is the holy life.

First Corinthians, Chapter 9, Verses 24 to 27…

1CO 9:24

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

1CO 9:25

Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we do it to receive an imperishable wreath.

1CO 9:26

Therefore I (Paul) run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air (fruitlessly)…

1CO 9:27

…but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Paul is not talking about salvation here…he is talking about the sidelines…there are many Christians who have voluntarily taken themselves out of the game by living a life of lasciviousness or legalism…

Do you want to be special?  Then don’t take yourself out of the race.  Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 12 and 13…

Do you want to be special?  Then turn your attention to God the Holy Spirit.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

ACT 4:12

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given to mankind by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”

LUK 19:10

“For the Son of Man (the Lord Jesus Christ) has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
