TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

There is a Worse Disease Than Cancer

 

When a friend calls to tell me he has cancer…a rather regular occurrence in the last few years as I move toward the winter of my life, the news doesn’t have nearly the effect it did about ten years ago.  You see, I’ve seen prayer reverse situations where friends have had cancer so many times that I am certain that prayer is the CURE for cancer.

 

There is an even more deadly disease that has no cure, and there is no way to pray someone out of the malady.  It is the disease of UNBELIEF.  At best, unbelief can be described as skepticism.  What is unbelief really?  It is the rejection of the truth.  Jesus Christ is God.  That truth is rejected by about two-thirds of the seven billion people on earth.  It is such a simple truth.  Perhaps that is why it is so easily rejected.  The Lord Jesus Christ sent many prophets to warn His favorite nation, Unbelieving Israel, and His favorite people, the Unbelieving Jewish Race concerning the folly of unbelief in their Messiah…because Jesus Christ IS the Jewish Messiah.  Among the prophets sent was Jeremiah…who warned Israel and The Jewish Race of impending doom from their unbelief.  Jeremiah, Chapter 13, Verses 15 to 17 say…

 

JEREMIAH 13:15

Listen and give heed, do not be haughty, for the Lord has spoken.

 

JEREMIAH 13:16

Give glory to the Lord your God, before He brings darkness and before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains…and while you are hoping for light

the Lord makes it into deep darkness, and turns it into gloom.

 

JEREMIAH 13:17

But if you will not listen to the Word, my soul will sob in secret for such pride (on your part)…and my eyes will bitterly weep and flow down with tears, because the flock of the Lord (The Jewish Race) has been taken captive.

 

For those in our midst who will not listen, who will face impending doom because they ignore the warnings concerning the Deity of Christ…those who willfully choose unbelief…it is heartbreaking for us.  Yet there is little we can do about it.  Welcome to a place where you can replace unbelief with faith by heeding the Word of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

There is a Worse Disease Than Cancer

 

We continue our study of Romans, Chapter 10, and we pick it up at the end of the third passage before we transition into the fourth passage…Romans, Chapter 10, Verse 14…

 

ROMANS 10:14

How then will Unbelieving Israel and the Unbelieving Jewish Race call on the Lord in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in the Lord whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

 

ROMANS 10:15

How will preachers preach unless preachers are divinely sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”

 

PASSAGE 4

 

ROMANS 10:16

However, Israel and The Jewish Race did not all heed the good news of the gospel message…for (the prophet) Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”

 

ROMANS 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing comes by the Word of Christ.

 

ROMANS 10:18

But I (Paul) say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have heard…“Their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”

 

ROMANS 10:19

But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation, by a nation without understanding will I anger you.”

 

ROMANS 10:20

And (the prophet) Isaiah is very bold and says, “I was found by those who did not seek Me…I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

 

And in the last verse of Romans, Chapter 10, Paul reminds us of the plight of Unbelieving Israel and the Unbelieving Jewish Race…

 

ROMANS 10:21

But as for Israel and The Jewish Race the Lord says, “All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

 

What does it mean to be obstinate?  It means to hold on fiercely to an opinion, especially a wrong opinion.  Unbelief is the worst disease to affect the human heart.  Those who do not believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is God…that He is the ONLY WAY to salvation…hold on to that obstinate view, and they will hold that view with just as much ferocity for all eternity in the Lake of Fire.

 

Let’s remind ourselves of the first part of Passage 3 in Romans, Chapter 10.  In Romans, Chapter 10, Verse 11, God makes a promise.

 

ROMANS 10:11

For the Scripture says, “Whosoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ will not be disappointed.”

 

This is a beautiful start to the third passage.  Then to whom the promise is

made is mentioned…

 

ROMANS 10:12

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek…for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for ALL who call on Him…

 

The promise is for ALL…to the Jew FIRST!  And…Romans, Chapter 10, Verse 13…

 

ROMANS 10:13

…for “whosoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

 

God provides ALL the resources for “whosoever” to be saved…He sends a Pastor (PREACHER)…the Pastor does PREACHING… the Pastor presents the GOSPEL MESSAGE so “whosoever” can hear the gospel message (be sure to pick a pastor who is teaching an accurate message)…and once “whosoever” hears the gospel message, “whosoever” can call on the name of the Lord and be saved by the Lord through spending faith…“I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.”  Now prosecuting attorney Paul starts to deal with the unbelieving members of The Jewish Race who reject such a simple gospel message…Romans, Chapter 10, Verses 14 and 15…

 

ROMANS 10:14

How then will Unbelieving Israel and the Unbelieving Jewish Race call on the Lord in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in the Lord whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

 

ROMANS 10:15

How will preachers preach unless they are divinely sent to preach? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”

 

The Mosaic Law was not good news for its hearers...Second Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verse 7…

 

SECOND CORINTHIANS 3:7

But if the ministry of death (the Mosaic Law), (written) in letters engraved on stones, came with glory (and it did…a fading glory), so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was…

 

So how can Unbelieving Israel and The Unbelieving Jewish Race call on the Lord if they have not heard of Him or His gospel message?  They have nothing to worry about.  The Lord Jesus Christ seeks them out.  The Lord sends a Pastor (PREACHER)…the Pastor does PREACHING…he presents the accurate GOSPEL MESSAGE so “whosoever” can hear the gospel message…and once “whosoever” hears the gospel message, “whosoever” can call on the name of the Lord and be saved by the Lord through spending faith.  Best of all, the gospel message is always custom made for each person, presented in a way they can hear it from a person they trust enough to hear it from.  Then each person has a choice. 

 

You hear the good news…but will you heed the good news?  Will you spend your faith properly?  Will you have faith in yourself for salvation, or faith in Him?  That’s up to you.  Let’s take a music break…the break song is GLORIOUS DAY by Casting Crowns.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

There is a Worse Disease Than Cancer

 

Welcome back!  What are we to do with the disease of UNBELIEF?  The easy thing to do is to question God about it, as if it is His fault, instead of questioning those who don’t believe.  Are you sure they heard?  Are you sure they knew?  Paul deals with the arguments.  Romans, Chapter 10, Verses 16 to 21…

 

ROMANS 10:16

However, Unbelieving Israel and The Unbelieving Jewish Race did not all heed the good news (of the gospel message)…for (the prophet) Isaiah says, “Lord, who (among the Jews) has believed our report (the gospel message)?”

 

ROMANS 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing comes by the Word of Christ.

 

Now Paul deals with the excuse makers among those choosing UNBELIEF…

 

ROMANS 10:18

But I (Paul) say, surely they (Israel and The Jewish Race) have never heard (the gospel), have they? Indeed they have heard…“Their voice (the voice of missionaries preaching the gospel message) has gone out into all the earth, and their words have gone out to the ends of the world.”

 

ROMANS 10:19

But I (Paul) say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First (as far back as) Moses (he) says, “I will make you (Israel and The Jewish Race) jealous by that which is not a nation (the Gentiles), by a nation without understanding will I anger you.”

 

ROMANS 10:20

And (the prophet) Isaiah is very bold and says, “I was found by those who did not seek Me (the Gentiles), I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

 

ROMANS 10:21

But as for Israel and The Jewish Race the Lord says, “All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

 

How do you explain unbelief?  It’s simple.  Obstinacy.  Some believe.  Some don’t.  The Lord does all the work to seek out His creatures, and some just don’t want to be found.  Yet the Lord doesn’t change His attitude toward His creatures.  In Isaiah, Chapter 52, Verses 1 to 10 the Lord tells of the future of Unbelieving Israel and The Unbelieving Jewish Race…

 

ISAIAH 52:1

Awake, awake, clothe yourself in your strength, O Zion…clothe yourself in your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city…for the uncircumcised and the unclean will no longer come into you.

 

ISAIAH 52:2

Shake yourself from the dust, rise up, O captive Jerusalem…loose yourself from the chains around your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

 

ISAIAH 52:3

For thus says the Lord, “You were sold for nothing and you will be redeemed without money.”

 

Instead they are redeemed with the Lord’s blood!

 

ISAIAH 52:4

For thus says the Lord God, “My people (The Jewish Race) went down at the first into Egypt to reside there…then the Assyrians oppressed them without cause.”

 

ISAIAH 52:5

“Now therefore, what do I have here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?” Again the Lord declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long.”

 

ISAIAH 52:6

“Therefore My people shall know My name…therefore in that day I am the one who is speaking, ‘Here I am.’”

 

ISAIAH 52:7

How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news,

who announces peace and brings good news of happiness, who announces salvation, and says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

 

ISAIAH 52:8

Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices, they shout joyfully together…for they will see with their own eyes when the Lord restores Zion.

 

ISAIAH 52:9

Break forth, shout joyfully together, you waste places of Jerusalem…for the Lord has comforted His people…He has redeemed Jerusalem.

 

ISAIAH 52:10

The Lord has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations, that all the ends of the earth may see the salvation of our God.

 

As a teacher, I experience unbelief all the time…and I hate it…I reach out with tried and true knowledge and watch it rejected either actively or passively by most people.  It bothers me deeply.  It’s easy for me to honor a person’s choice, simply because I have to.  But for those who choose UNBELIEF, especially in the matter of the Lord Jesus Christ, I don’t like it one bit.  And as quiet as it is kept, neither does the Lord.  The Lord wants all to BELIEVE and BE SAVED.  First Timothy, Chapter 2, Verses 3 and 4…

 

FIRST TIMOTHY 2:3

This is what is good and acceptable in the sight of the God who is our Savior (the Lord Jesus Christ)…

 

FIRST TIMOTHY 2:4

…who desires all men to be saved and who desires all men to come to the knowledge of the truth.

ROMANS 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God the Father…divine omnipotence…to provide salvation to everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ…to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentiles).

 

MATTHEW 7:13

“Enter salvation through the narrow gate (the Lord Jesus Christ)…for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction…and there are many who enter through the wide gate.”

 

MATTHEW 7:14

“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to the resurrection life, and there are few who find the narrow way.”

 

JOHN 10:9

“I (the Lord Jesus Christ) am the door to salvation…if anyone enters through believing in Me…he will be saved…and then he will go in and out and find pasture.”

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22

For all in union with Adam are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…but all those in union with Christ will live the resurrection life.
