Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a Christian Church…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

While we are not responsible for sin, because our Lord was responsible to take them out of the way, we are not to let sin be our master.  Romans, Chapter 6, Verses 1 and 2…

ROM 6:1-2

What shall we believers in Christ say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

Isn’t it time to give obedience to God a chance in our lives?  As those who are in union with Christ, we are to let Christ be our guide…not men…not appetites…Christ.  Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 11…

ROM 6:11

Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God the Father, in union with Christ Jesus.

When we are alive to Christ, we are alive to all the possibilities He has in store for our present and our future.  We give no regard to the past, except to its many lessons.  We learn them and we benefit from them.  We enjoy the present, and welcome its challenges.  We look forward with expectancy to the future knowing that the day of the Lord is at hand, and soon we will meet our God face-to-face.

Let us pray...

We’re grateful Heavenly Father for the privilege of studying the absolute truth...the Word of God…

Help us to trust your divine plan…help us to trust You…help us to let our guards down with each other…help us to enjoy your constant deliverances… help us to see life differently, from Your perspective…change our hearts Father.

We pray that You make this lesson a source of cleansing for us….we pray that You help us to value the communicators of Your Word…we pray that You help us value the messages from Your Word as divinely inspired instruction in righteousness…we pray that You truly help us to know what having Your righteousness is in an unadulterated way…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit...in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

Romans 3

Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ for everything?

To the resident and non-resident members of Barah Ministries,to our guests who join us from time to time, and to all believers in Christ…Second Corinthians, Chapter 1, Verses 2 to 5 say…

2CO 1:2

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

2CO 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort…

2CO 1:4

…who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2CO 1:5

For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

I am wishing you peace and comfort today as you proceed in your walk with God.  We are studying in the third chapter of Romans, and we are making the transition from sin to righteousness…from law to grace…and several deep and compelling questions come to mind, especially the question of trust.

THE BOOK OF ROMANS

Righteousness:

Your Justification is ONLY by Faith

Romans 3:21 to Romans 4:25

Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ for everything?

Perhaps the hardest part of the Christian journey is the transition from placing our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation to trusting the Lord Jesus Christ for everything else in life.  Second Corinthians, Chapter 1, Verse 9 says…

2CO 1:9

…indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but we would trust in God the Father who raises the dead…

Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ for everything?

I’m not really a beach person.  It’s not that I mind being by the water…I do have a swimming pool into which I have not set foot in three years…no I don't mind being near the water…but I’ve never really been a fan of water and sand as much as I am a fan of the sun.  Yet I have been sucked into walking on the sand and gathering sea shells.  I think every one should probably do that at least once in their lifetime to get it out of their system.

I think walking on the beach and gathering seashells is a fitting analogy for our lives.  We pick up shells, and inspect them, and instantly proclaim their beauty, whether they are beautiful or not, and soon we have a bag full of shells…we have a load to carry…and we get to decide what to do with them.

Our lives are the same.  We study the Word of God and it tells us what is valuable and what is not.  Righteousness is valuable.  The law is not.  Romans, Chapter 3, Verses 21 and 22  …

ROM 3:21

But now apart from the Mosaic Law the righteousness from God has been made clearly visible, being witnessed to by the Mosaic Law in sacrificial offerings and being witnessed to by the Old Testament Prophets in direct statements…

ROM 3:22

…a righteousness that comes as a gift from God the Father through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for all those who believe (whosoever); for there is no distinction…

Righteousness is valuable.  The law is not.  Yet we continue to gather the law to ourselves like sea shells, collecting and declaring as beautiful each part of the law we tenaciously hold onto, and God comes along on a regular basis and knocks all of the shells from our hands.  WE can’t help but pick them up again to make God’s job of helping us to take advantage of the gift of righteousness more difficult.

You see God values righteousness.  Turn in your bibles to Psalm 51.  It is prayer for pardon from King David as he recovered emotionally from the Bathsheba incident.

PSA 51:1

Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.

PSA 51:2

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

PSA 51:3

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

PSA 51:4

Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge.

PSA 51:5

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.

PSA 51:6

Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

PSA 51:7

Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

PSA 51:8

Make me to hear joy and gladness, let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

PSA 51:9

Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.

PSA 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

PSA 51:11

Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

PSA 51:12

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.

PSA 51:13

Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will be converted to You.

PSA 51:14

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.

PSA 51:15

O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise.

PSA 51:16

For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.

PSA 51:17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

PSA 51:18

By Your favor do good to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem.

PSA 51:19

Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, in burnt offering and whole burnt offering; then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ for everything?

Take a five-minute break and we’ll take a look at the value of letting your guard down with God.

BREAK

Somewhere over the Rainbow

Welcome back.

Do you trust the Lord Jesus Christ for everything?

When we experience adversity in this life, it is the Lord knocking the seashells out of our hands.  Psalm 51, Verse 6…

PSA 51:6

Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

God gives us His righteousness for a reason.  God wants everything in our lives to be true with no mixture.  No mixture of the law with righteousness.  But we just keep on picking up those sea shells.  We think that some measure of the law is okay.  We think it’s okay to mix the law with righteousness.  The Lord does not think that is okay.

The Lord is not asking us to do what we cannot do.  He is not asking us to cover ourselves.  He is asking us to drop everything and to follow Him.

When we stand naked before Him, acutely aware of our guilt…

PSA 51:4

Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge.

When we stand naked before Him, we have hope in Him.  Righteousness is the foundation on which God builds the believer’s life.  Our intimacy comes when we allow Him to lead and when we obediently follow.

What are the seashells He knocks out of our hands?  Religion.  Legalism.  False relationships.  Sex.  Drugs.  Alcohol.  Rock and Roll.  Money.  Family.  Self-Righteousness.  Asceticism.  Lasciviousness.  Morality.  Career.  Lust.  In short, all forms of idolatry…anything that would come between you and Him.

In God’s plan, the deaths we experience in this life are always followed by life.  It is God knocking the seashells of law out of our hands, those idolatries to which we tenaciously cling, so that He can build on the foundation of righteousness as He continues to perfect us, His believers.

You can’t take it with you.  You will not be able to bring the law to heaven with you.  Why not just drop it off here?  Now!  And enjoy God’s ride…

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ
