Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

“What is the Christian walk?”  Asked another way, what are the Lord’s lifestyle demands for believers in Christ?  Or as Peter asked in his second letter, “What sort of people ought you believers in Christ be in holy conduct and godliness?”  The New Testament is filled with the Lord’s thoughts on the matter.  In Romans, Chapter 12, Verses 1 and 2, the Lord says, through the writer of the letter to the Hebrews…

ROM 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brethren (believers in Christ), by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

In the New Testament, believers are no longer asked for animal sacrifices, as were Old Testament believers.  Instead they are asked to put their whole selves on the line, in full time service to the Lord, as living sacrifices.  We are to sacrifice our entire lives and all of our activities in service to the Lord.  Then the Lord gives us the “how” of holy conduct and godliness…

ROM 12:2

And do not be conformed to this world, but keep on being transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Lord warns us not to be conformed to the world…the Lord encourages us to renew our thinking through the study of the Word of God.  The “how” of holy conduct and godliness…the how of the Christian walk is pretty simple when you boil it all down…as the Lord highlights in Luke, Chapter 10, Verse 27…

LUK 10:27

And Jesus answered (the lawyer saying), “You shall love the Lord your God unconditionally, with all your heart, and with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and you shall love your neighbor unconditionally as you love yourself unconditionally.”

Simple.  All.  Welcome to the place where you can learn how to worship the One and Only God, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, with all of yourself.

TODAY’S STUDY

Our New Identity Breaks Our Old Relationship With Sin

Recently a believer in Christ wrote, in self-reflection…

SELF-REFLECTION

I’m getting a lot out of biblical study…it’s difficult to convert what I am learning to application…but I’m working on it.

If you were a Pastor, what would you tell this growing believer?  If you were being honest, you’d have to tell this believer, “Stop working on it.”  Paul highlights this idea in Philippians, Chapter 1, Verse 6…

PHI 1:6

For I am confident of this very thing, that God the Father who began a good work in you will keep on perfecting it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Let God work on it.  When we obsess with our inability to live the life God expects of us, and when we have had quite enough of trying, we turn to God and ask Him to do it all for us.  As Christians, as we continue our study of Romans, Chapter 6, we ask ourselves…if SIN is no longer our sovereign because we died to sin…what is our sovereign…or better, who is our Sovereign?  How should we be spending our time as Christians once we realize our inability to live up to God’s standards?  In today’s lesson we’ll begin the journey to relaxation, knowing the things God has put in place for us to relax.  First, a few announcements.

TODAY’S STUDY

Our New Identity Breaks Our Old Relationship With Sin

Turn to Romans, Chapter 6…the next part of our opening passage in the first eleven verses of Romans, Chapter 6 contains these thoughts…beginning in Verse 3…

ROM 6:3

Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into union with Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

ROM 6:4

Therefore we have been buried with Christ through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of God the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

ROM 6:5

For if we believers in Christ have become united with Him in the likeness of

His death, and we have, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection…

ROM 6:6

…knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin…

ROM 6:7

…for he who has died to sin is freed from sin.

Baptism is in view in this part of the passage.  The Christian Way of Life begins with a death.  That sounds a bit strange, doesn't it?  How is it that we, as Christians, move from the condemnation of spiritual death “in Adam” into another death by means of baptism?

Thorough the baptism of God the Holy Spirit, at the moment of salvation, we believers in Christ are placed into union with the Lord Jesus Christ.  From that moment forward, we are always identified with the Lord, and we are identified with everything that is the Lord’s.  From the moment of baptism on, you are the Lord’s possession.  Baptism means identification… whether it is water baptism (which is NOT EVER the means of salvation), or the baptism of God the Holy Spirit (which IS the means of salvation), believers are identified with Christ.  Whether we are dunked in water as a public symbol of a spiritual decision, or not, (water baptism is not a requirement for salvation) God is drowning a former connection to the “in Adam” life, and God is starting a new connection for us to the “in Christ” life.  Take a five-minute break and we’ll see the path of death at baptism leading to the resurrection life.

BREAK

When I Think About Home

Welcome back…Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 3…

ROM 6:3

Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into union with Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

Baptism begins with death.  Believers in Christ are identified with His death.

FROM DEATH TO LIFE

SIN                                            RIGHTEOUSNESS

PERSON SINS                                             GOOD

OLD MAN                                              NEW MAN

THE WORLD                                  THE KINGDOM

At baptism, we move from a life of sin “in Adam” to a life of righteousness “in Christ.”  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22…

1CO 15:22

For as “in Adam” all are set to die the second death, so also “in Christ” all will be made alive.

We move from an over concern with personal sins, to the doing of good under the direction of God the Holy Spirit.  Romans Chapter 6, Verse 13…

ROM 6:13

…and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God the Father as those alive from the dead, and present your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

We move from being directed by the Old Man to the new life in the New Man.  Romans Chapter 6, Verse 4…

ROM 6:4

Therefore we have been buried with Christ through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of God the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

We move from being a friend of the World, Satan’s kingdom of death, to being a friend of God the Father in the kingdom of His beloved Son.  Colossians, Chapter 1, Verse 13…

COL 1:13

For God the Father rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son (the Lord Jesus Christ)…

The Lord Jesus Christ lived the picture of holy conduct and godliness…the Lord Jesus Christ walked in a manner worthy of the calling to which He was called, and it all began with a death…a death with which we believers are identified…turn to First Peter, Chapter 3, Verses 18…Verse 18 begins with a picture of that death at the Cross…

1PE 3:18

For Christ also died for sins once for all (not yearly as in the Old Testament), the just One (Christ) died for the unjust (all mankind), so that Christ might bring us to God the Father, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in (by means of) the Spirit (en pneumati)…

1PE 3:19

…in which also the Lord Jesus Christ went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison (in Tartarus…the demons from Genesis 6)…

1PE 3:20

…who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons (all believers in Christ), were brought safely through the water.

1PE 3:21

Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…

1PE 3:22

…(Jesus Christ) who is at the right hand of God the Father, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

What kind of holy conduct and godliness for us believers in Christ?  This kind…

PE 4:1

Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin…

PE 4:2

…so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.

We died to sin.

Sin is no longer our sovereign.

We have a new identity.

We are “in Christ.”

We are identified with his death, His burial, His resurrection, His ascension, and His session (His seat at the right hand of God the Father).

This new identity demands a new way of thinking, a new way of acting…a new life…the ONLY life worth living.  You’re invited.

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ

are Guarantees!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.

JOH 3:36

He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the ZOE life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the Zoe) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father abides on him.”
