Welcome To

BARAH MINISTRIES

a Christian Church

Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

Psalm 116 is a song of thanksgiving for deliverance…

PSA 116:1

I love the Lord, because He hears my voice and my supplications.

When the Lord delivers His godly ones from affliction, we become even more committed to Him.

PSA 116:2

I love the Lord because He has inclined His ear to me (He listens to me), therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.

When the Lord delivers us, we are free to tell the world about how He keeps His word…we tell them of our deliverance from the experience of being delivered.

PSA 116:3

The cords of death encompassed me and the terrors of Sheol came upon me;

I found distress and sorrow.

Sometimes in the midst of trials, we think we are going to die.

PSA 116:4

Then I called upon the name of the Lord:  “O Lord, I beseech (beg) You, save my life!”

PSA 116:5

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yes, our God is compassionate.

The Lord hears us and delivers us to victory from the trial.

PSA 116:6

The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.

PSA 116:7

Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

PSA 116:8

For You have rescued my soul from death, O Lord…you’ve delivered my eyes from tears…you’ve delivered my feet from stumbling.

Once the Lord delivers us, we find him to be completely trustworthy.  We relax in our faith in Him.  And we tell others about Him…

PSA 116:9

I shall walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

PSA 116:10

I believed when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.”

PSA 116:11

I said in my alarm, “All men are liars.”

When we are suffering, perhaps people don’t respond as they say they will…people don’t always respond as we wish they would…people aren’t always caring and compassionate toward us…yet God still comes through.

PSA 116:12

What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?

We always want to pay God back for delivering us, but He needs nothing from us.  He is delighted to deliver us and He loves us unconditionally.

PSA 116:13

I shall lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.

We never get tired of seeing the Lord deliver His beloved ones.

PSA 116:14

I shall pay my vows to the Lord…Oh may it be in the presence of all His people.

We need not pay the Lord back and we need not make vows…the Lord has us covered.

PSA 116:15

Precious in the sight of the Lord even is the death of His godly ones.

Even if we were to die while suffering, it would demonstrate God’s ultimate desire for His believers…that they reside in heaven with Him forever.

PSA 116:16

O Lord, surely I am Your servant…I am Your servant, the son of Your handmaid…you have loosed my bonds.

PSA 116:17

To You I shall offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call upon the name of the Lord.

PSA 116:18

I shall pay my vows to the Lord…Oh may it be in the presence of all His people…

PSA 116:19

In the courts of the Lord’s house…in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

We are grateful to our God for His deliverance when we suffer…welcome to a place where we can give Him thanks and praise for His marvelous works on our behalf.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Thank you for coming through again for your believers…in the midst of our concern for those close to home…thank you for proving Yourself to be faithful…thanks for keeping Your Word…

Show us how to live lives that praise you and that reflect Your love for us…keep us safe in the midst of trials…continue to show Yourself by Your supernatural ways…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit in Christ’s name...Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

God the Holy Spirit is the One We Depend On

In our last lesson, we asked you to reflect on the question, “Who depends on you?”  Nine lessons into our study of Romans, Chapter 8, we are becoming familiar with the One we, as Christians, depend on…God the Holy Spirit.  Here’s a reminder of our first passage of study in Romans, Chapter 8… Verses 1 to 11…

ROM 8:1

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in union with Christ Jesus.

ROM 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

ROM 8:3

For what the Mosaic Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God the Father did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh…and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh…

ROM 8:4

…so that the requirement of the Mosaic Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

ROM 8:5

For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

ROM 8:6

For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace…

ROM 8:7

…because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so…

ROM 8:8

…and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

ROM 8:9

However, you (believers in Christ) are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, that one does not belong to Christ.

ROM 8:10

If Christ is in you, (and He is for believers in Christ) though the body is dead because of sin (indwelling), yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness (indwelling).

ROM 8:11

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you (and He does for believers in Christ), He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

We’ll continue our look at our dependence on God the Holy Spirit after a few announcements.

TODAY’S STUDY

God the Holy Spirit is the One We Depend On

In just nine hours, mostly overview, we have had much to say about God the Holy Spirit, the One on whom we depend.  I wonder how much of what we have said about Him that you remember.  So as I set out to write down all the things we mentioned about Him, easily it filed a page.  I thought you might like to see it all in one place.  There’s no room for the bible verses, which you have already seen…only room for comments to stir your memory.

God the Holy Spirit is a Person with will, with intellect, and with emotions.  He chooses, He thinks, and He feels.

God the Holy Spirit is God.  He is co-equal, co-infinite, and co-eternal…in other words, He has exactly the same attributes and essence as God the Father and God the Son.

God the Holy Spirit fights the battle believers in Christ have with indwelling flesh…that part of us that the apostle Paul describes as “waging war against the law of our mind and making us prisoners of the law of sin which is in my body.

God the Holy Spirit is the unsung hero of our lives…He does great things for us but receives little or no recognition for them.

God the Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture…the author of the very Word of God that edifies us.  With Scripture, God the Holy Spirit renews or minds.

God the Holy Spirit keeps on pouring His enabling power into us, providing the power for the Christian Way of Living.

At our baptism as Christians, God the Holy Spirit places us into permanent union with the Lord Jesus Christ….and He seals the placement with His very own signature to ensure that we have eternal security…that we never have to worry about losing our “so great” salvation through any mistake we would ever make.

God the Father says it is not good for man to be alone, so He provided God the Holy Spirit as our “helper suitable.”

When we make mistakes…when we don’t have power…God the Holy Spirit fills up our deficiencies.

God the Holy Spirit restored a formless and void planet in the first chapter of Genesis…He was the agent that provided Mary with a virgin birth…He was present at the baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ by John the Baptist…He was with the Lord Jesus Christ in the wilderness when He was tempted by Satan…He has been known to cast out demons…He is the one with the “floor plan” for your deliverance.

Let’s take a brief music break and then hear more about the One on whom we depend, God the Holy Spirit.

MORE PRECIOUS THAN SILVER

Various Artists

God the Holy Spirit dispenses your spiritual gift.  What spiritual gift did He give to you?

God the Holy Spirit is Your Mentor…a trusted advisor.

God the Holy Spirit is Your Teacher…the One who answers your questions about the Godhead and who makes the things of God that seem mysterious crystal clear.

God the Holy Spirit is our spokesman.

God the Holy Spirit is like the rudder of a boat…He guides your life…He leads you to the places and to the resources you need for the Christian Way of Living.

God the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth because He leads us into all the truth…the Spirit of Revelation because He makes the complex simple… the Spirit of Grace because He is forgiving…the Spirit of Holiness because He teaches us how to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called…the Eternal Spirit because He has always existed, He exists now, and He will exist forever.

God the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Glory because that is His destination for us…He is conforming us to the image of God the Son.

God the Holy Spirit is our Helper…He is our Comforter…He is our Paraclete.  I can remember when these words were used to describe Him and a Pastor I studied with rejected two of the words as soft…Helper and Comforter…portraying God the Holy Spirit as if He didn’t have an ounce of emotion or compassion…of course that is just not the case.  He is every bit as comforting and every bit as helpful as the other members of the Godhead…He has a godly compassion and that compassion causes Him to come powerfully to our assistance as a Paraclete.

God the Holy Spirit indwells us…He lives in our bodies as omnipresent God…a God who is able to be everywhere at the same time…a God who is not bound by space or time…a God who is constantly present throughout the whole created universe…a God whose presence inside of us makes our body a temple.  First Corinthians, Chapter 6, Verse 19…

1CO 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of God the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

God the Holy Spirit is responsible for convicting the whole world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment…He is the keeper of the gospel message and makes provision for every unbeliever to hear the truth that will set them free from the bondage to sin and the law.

God the Holy Spirit produces His fruit in us.  It’s called the fruit of the Spirit…not the fruit of you…Galatians, Chapter 5, Verses 22 and 23…

GAL 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness gentleness, self-control; against such virtues there is no law.

When you love someone UNconditionally, it’s because God the Holy Spirit is producing His fruit in you as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  There is nothing inherently good in you that is doing the loving.  You are reflecting God the Holy Spirit’s love.

God the Holy Spirit is absolute, not relative.  So when He says something, you can absolutely count on it as true.  We do well when we listen to Him... Revelation, Chapter 2, Verse 7…

Revelation 2:7

He who has an ear, let him hear what God the Holy Spirit says to the churches.

God the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Life because He is the power behind the Resurrection Life of the Christian…Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 2

ROM 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life in union with Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

God the Holy Spirit invites all creatures to the life of freedom…and away from the religious life, both the immoral life of lasciviousness and the moral life of legalism.

God the Holy Spirit could never be mistaken for a ghost.  He is wrongly called the Holy Ghost in many religions.  He is not an apparition.  He is a Person…a Person on whom you can always depend.

The things we have learned about God the Holy Spirit, so far, form an impressive but partial resume.  He loves you UNconditionally and He is always on your side.  How does it feel to have a Person who is this powerful, one of the most powerful beings in the universe completely on your side?  All of the things He does are directed toward providing YOU with spiritual victory.

What is a spiritual victory?

As Christians, we attain a spiritual victory when at the point of decision, in any situation, we make the decision God the Holy Spirit encourages us to make.  There are many opportunities to have spiritual victory.  When you depend on your Mentor and Teacher God the Holy Spirit, victory is always assured.

Depend on Him for your power.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ROM 3:10

…as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one”

ROM 5:8

But God the Father demonstrates His own unconditional love toward all mankind, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

JOH 3:17

For God the Father did not send the Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) into the world to condemn the world, but the Father sent His Son into the world that the world might be saved through believing in Him.

JOH 1:12

But as many as received the Lord (taking advantage of the free gift of salvation), to them He gave the right (once and for all time) to become children of God…to those who believe in Christ’s name…
