(#427) Romans 12 - The Lord Expects Things from His Believers

/Welcome To

BARAH MINISTRIES

a Christian Church

Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher\

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a Christian Church that makes a difference worldwide courtesy of the internet…Barah Ministries…a Christian Church that makes a difference locally in the Gilbert, Mesa, and Chandler, AZ communities.  My name is Pastor Rory Clark.  At Barah Ministries, our God is the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we teach the Word of God from God’s perspective…not from man’s perspective.

Have you ever heard yourself saying, “God forgive me?”  Did you ever think that might be a total waste of time?  Well it is.  There is no need for you to ask God to forgive you.  Inevitably, everyone makes mistakes, especially Christians.  They’re called sins.  God has forgiven every sin you have ever committed…every sin you ever will commit…past, present and future.  God forgave you in the past, and the result is that your sins stand forgiven forever as an established and irreversible fact.  Yes…every sin!  So there is no need to ask for what you already have.  Isaiah, Chapter 43, Verse 25 says…

/ISAIAH 43:25

“I (the Lord), even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake…and I will not remember your sins.”\

God’s forgiveness is a gift. You can’t earn it.  He gives forgiveness freely because of who He is, and not because of who you are, nor because of what you have done.  God has forgiven the sins of the righteous and the unrighteous…the godly and the ungodly…He has forgiven the sins of ALL of His creatures, both angelic and human.  In First John, Chapter 2, Verses 1 and 2, the apostle John says…

/FIRST JOHN 2:1

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may (be able)

not (to) sin. And if anyone sins, and of course we all do, we have an

Advocate with God the Father…Jesus Christ…the only righteous One…\

/FIRST JOHN 2:2

…and Jesus Christ Himself is the propitiation for our sins…and not for our sins only (as believers in Christ), but also for the sins of the whole world (unbelievers as well).\

Propitiation means that God the Father only recognizes what Jesus did at the Cross as payment for your sins.  You cannot work to pay for your sins, so don’t waste your time.

Forgiveness is a free gift from God.

Once you have freedom you can do anything you choose to do.  Only the immature would take freedom as a license to sin.    Sin ALWAYS has consequences.  The end of Romans, Chapter 5 and the beginning of Romans, Chapter 6 clear things up for the immature…

/ROMANS 5:20

The Mosaic Law came in so that transgressions would abound (increase)… but where sin abounded…God’s grace overflowed (in abundance) all the more…\

/ROMANS 5:21

…so that, as sin reigned in death…even so God’s grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.\

/ROMANS 6:1

What shall we say then (face-to-face with these things)?  Should we believers in Christ continue to sin so that God’s grace may increase to us?\

/ROMANS 6:2

May it never be! How shall we who died to the sovereignty of sin still live in it (as if we are sin’s slave)?\

Forgiveness is a free gift from the grace of God.

God blesses us with forgiveness and it requires no work on our part.  In fact, none of God’s blessings require work on our part…not the free gift of forgiveness…not the free gift of unconditional love…not the free gift of grace. If you sin, God still blesses you because of who He is…yet taking advantage of His forgiveness…abusing His forgiveness is not smart.  It’s not something we do with those we love.

Welcome to a place where you can learn about and benefit from God’s forgiveness.

/TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

The Lord Expects Things from His Believers\

A frequent question in the minds of Christians, even if we don’t say it out loud is, “What does God expect from me?”  You’ll be happy to know that the Lord does expect some things from you, and they’re pretty easy to give, because God makes it easy to give them.  In today’s lesson, you’ll learn some of God’s expectations of us…in addition, just as we do every month, we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper. One of the things we’ll learn is that God expects us to depend on Him.

We don’t always live up to God’s standards.  But God compensated for our weaknesses by dying on a Cross for us.  Here’s June Murphy to remind us how willing God is to forget our mistakes with her song, HE REMEMBERS TO FORGET.

/OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...\

Almighty God and Father…

Thank you for being a faithful God…someone we can always count on to do exactly what You say…and even though Your enemy, Satan, inspires false teachers to lie about You, when we return to Your Word we can know exactly what You think...especially, we know You have unconditional love for us…

…open our hearts to the truth You’ll be revealing to us today, and help us to

obey You and to depend on You…knowing that everything You tell us and everything You expect from us is for our good…

…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s

name...Amen.

/TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

The Lord Expects Things from His Believers\

We continue our study of the final passage of Romans, Chapter 12 beginning at Verse 9…what are some of the things the Lord expects from His believers?

/ROMANS 12:9

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil…cling to what is good.\

The easiest way to love without hypocrisy is to love unconditionally.  Every person is on a unique journey.  The life cycle of human beings closely resembles the life cycle of butterflies…from egg, to larva, to pupa, to adult.  The egg turns into a caterpillar, and the caterpillar struggles mightily on the journey…it eats like crazy to grow in the larva stage…and it wriggles and giggles like crazy to complete its mighty metamorphosis into a butterfly. No one knows your journey better than you do.  From the outside we might offer you wisdom and resources to assist you on the journey, yet ultimately you decide how the wisdom and resources fit your uniqueness.

The easiest way to abhor evil is to refuse to engage in it.  There are people

that quit smoking, but how do they do it?  They just decide to walk away from it and to never come back to it.  The struggle of walking away is mighty painful…but the result is life prolonging.

Clinging to what is good is simple…notice the good in your life and wallow in it!  We are to wantgood…more, and more, and more!  Whatever is bad in your life…kill it…NOW!  Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 10…

/ROMANS 12:10

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love…give preference to one another in honor…\

The easiest way to be devoted to your fellow believers in Christ is to consider their feelings. Look at life from behind their eyes. It should be obvious from some of Deacon Denny’s offering messages how much it hurts him when people leave this congregation or when people take advantage of his mentor…the Pastor…yet in the midst of his hurt he always brings to our remembrance our unity with those who are no longer here.  That’s what devotion looks like.

The easiest way to give preference to each other is to honor the individuality of another person’s journey by not judging them.  We truly don’t understand what others are going through.  We do well to assist others any way we can, whether they accept the help or not.  Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 11…

/ROMANS 12:11

…not lagging behind in diligence…fervent in spirit…serving the Lord…\

Those who are diligent are on the move.  They have no time for sitting around.  Those who are fervent in spirit are intense and passionate and are not afraid to show it. Those who are serving the Lord put Him first in everything, and take His opinion into consideration on every single decision.

Now the new verses for study in this passage…Romans, Chapter 12, Verses 12 and 13…what else does God expect from us?  He expects us to be…

/ROMANS 12:12

…rejoicing in hope…persevering in tribulation…devoted to prayer…\

/ROMANS 12:13

…contributing to the needs of the saints…practicing hospitality.\

What does God mean when He says…

/ROMANS 12:12a

…rejoicing in hope…\

God wants us to look forward to His second coming…which means God expects us to anticipate an amazing future. The Greek word for hope is elpis…and it means absolute confidence.  God expects us to be confident that everything He promises He will deliver.  When you think of being in heaven face-to-face with the Lord for all eternity…what do you think that will be like?  Don’t even bother because you can’t even imagine heaven.

/ROMANS 12:12b

…persevering in tribulation…\

When we undergo trials, God expects us to be patient…waiting for His deliverance.  Tribulation produces perseverance….and perseverance, repeated over and over, produces character…and character inspires hope…a hope that does not disappoint.  Hang in there.  Count it all joy when fall into various trials!

/ROMANS 12:12c

…devoted to prayer…\

The shortest verse in the bible…translated “pray without ceasing” … really says “make it a habit to pray.”  As Christians we totally underestimate the power of talking to God.  Stevie Wonder reminds us in one of his songs, “When you feel your life’s too hard…why don’t you have a talk with God?  When your load’s too much to bear…just go talk to God…He cares!”  Amen?! Devoted is strong word.  Prayer is probably the most underused asset in the Christian Way of Living.  When we pray we become a source of tremendous blessing to others and to ourselves.

/ROMANS 12:13a

…contributing to the needs of the saints…\

Look around at the people in your periphery…then tell me if you can “divine” their needs…the truth is you can’t.  But everyone you look at has needs.  God expects us to find out what those needs are and to provide for those needs in His name. It’s easy to respond to the needs of others…in other words, when people ask, you give.  But what are we to do with the people who won’t ask?   We need to initiate!

/ROMANS 12:13b

…practicing hospitality.\

Hospitality is a love for strangers.  If there is one thing I know for sure, we live in a xenophobic world…we are terrified of strangers.  Believe me I know.  As one of the friendliest people around, I am constantly shocked to see the abject terror on the faces of others when I am social with them as a stranger.  The thing I love most about God’s expectations in this matter is that He expects hospitality to be a PRACTICE.  Practice hospitality.  He wants us to repeat hospitality over and over.

These are just a few of the things God expects from His believers.  Let’s take a five-minute break, and when we come back we’ll take the offering and we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

/TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

The Lord Expects Things from His Believers\

God the Father always demonstrates for us, through Christ, what He expects us to do.  When we do what He expects, we reflect His glory.  In the matter of giving, we can learn from the Lord through Second Corinthians, Chapter 8, Verse 9…

/SECOND CORINTHIANS 8:9

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ…that though He was rich…yet for your sake He became poor…so that through His poverty you might become rich.\

Isn’t it great that the Lord doesn’t expect us to become poor through giving?  Yet He does expect us to be surprising.  We are surprising when we give more than even we expect to give.  This expression of faith in God’s ability says that we ALWAYS know that He will honor our giving with more giving of His own.  Be generous in your giving, knowing that your contributions will be redirected to those who are spiritually poor…to those who need the gospel message and the Word of God in their souls.

Let’s welcome up Deacon Denny Goodall with this week’s offering message.

/THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

At the Cross, the Lord Shows Us the Power of Dependence\

One of the great things about looking forward to eternity is that we know God will be doing everything for us and we’ll be depending on Him forever.

Always we prefer to be absent from our bodies and face-to-face with our Lord.  Here’s one of my favorite songs, performed by Don Moen…I JUST WANT TO BE WHERE YOU ARE.

/THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

At the Cross, the Lord Shows Us the Power of Dependence\

Welcome to The Lord’s Supper Celebration, the most intimate expression of love in The Christian Way of Living.  Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ demonstrates His desire for a deep, intimate and personal relationship with His believers by sharing His body and His blood with us.  First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verse 26 says…

/FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:26

For as often as you eat this bread (His body)…and as often as you drink this cup (His blood)…as part of the Lord’s Supper Celebration…you proclaim as a reality and you announce the significance of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross…and His resurrection from the dead…until He comes again at the second coming.\

Non-resident congregation members are invited to join in the sharing of the communion elements with the resident congregation.  Get your own bread and your own cup and celebrate with us.  We are one…in unity…we are in fellowship with each other…so let’s break the bread and drink the cup together in honor of our Lord.  This is a celebration for which we set aside time. We don’t do it on the move.

During The Lord’s Supper Celebration, the Lord Jesus Christ wants His believers to look back to the reality of His death on a Cross as a sacrifice for us…the Lord wants us to remember He has been resurrected from the dead…and Jesus wants us to look forward with absolute confidence that He will come again.

The Lord’s Supper Celebration reminds us that JESUS CHRIST IS GOD, and that our Lord won the Creator-creature conflict through His work on the Cross.

When I was in high school, I used to enjoy going to the Forest Preserves of Cook County, IL with a friend and his family.  I am not really a “nature boy,” but for some reason trips to the Forest Preserve with this family were always fun.  I’m guessing it was the cookouts that I really loved.  My friend’s family always made great burgers and ribs (and fried chicken and watermelon because I’m black).

My friend Ray was scared of his shadow.  On a beautiful August day in Chicago, we took a trip to the Forest Preserve.  We had the windows down, and as we entered the preserve a big old honey bee flew into the car.  My friend panicked.  It’s really funny how with the windows down, the bee knew how to stay in the car.  We were wishing he’d just leave on his own, but he didn’t.

Bees and I have an understanding.  “If you leave me alone, you won’t get dead.”  So the bee gave me professional courtesy and stayed away from me.

Buzz…buzz…buzz.  Other than my friend’s panicked screaming, that’s what we heard.  Buzz…buzz…buzz.  His father tried to calm Ray down, but it didn’t work.  Finally, Ray’s dad pulled the car over.  As calm as you please, he caught the bee in his hand, snatching it out of mid-air.

After a short time, he let the bee go.  Buzz…buzz…buzz.  There was that noise again.  The bee was on what seemed like an even more frantic flight pattern within the car. My friend panicked again.  My friend’s father asked, “Ray…why are you panicking?”  Ray said, “I hate bees Daddy.  Get it out of here!”  His Dad asked, “What are you afraid of, Ray?”  My friend said, “I don’t want to get stung Daddy.”

Ray’s father opened his hand and showed us the bee’s stinger firmly implanted in his palm.  “Ray,” his father continued, “That bee only has one stinger, and here it is in my hand.  He’s harmless now…just a bundle of buzz…buzz…buzz…buzz.    Open the doors, guys, and we’ll get him out.”

While preparing for this month’s Lord’s Supper Celebration, I was reminded of Ray’s father.  He did one of the most courageous things I had ever seen.  Ray and I were powerless in the situation, completely dependent on Ray’s father for a solution, and he came through for us by sacrificing himself.

It reminds me of what our Lord did at the Cross.  First Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 24…

/FIRST PETER 2:24

…and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself bore our sins in His own body on the Cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness…for by His wounds you were healed.\

The Lord bore the sting of the Cross to save us.  Isaiah, Chapter 53, Verse 5…

/ISAIAH 53:5

But the Lord Jesus Christ was pierced through for our transgressions…He

was crushed for our iniquities…the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him…and by His scourging we are healed.\

At the Cross, the Lord introduced us to the power of dependence.

Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 5 to 8…

/PHILIPPIANS 2:5

Have this (like-minded) attitude in yourselves…the same attitude that was also in Christ Jesus…\

/PHILIPPIANS 2:6

…who, although He had the same essence as God the Father (“I and the Father are the same”…Deity…100% God)… did not regard equality with God the Father a thing to be seized and held onto…\

God the Son voluntarily set aside the self-willed use of His Deity to become

the Lord Jesus Christ.

/PHILIPPIANS 2:7

…but instead Jesus emptied Himself (He divested himself of self interest… He made himself nothing)…taking the nature of a bond-servant (in human form)…and became made in the likeness of men (100% true humanity just like you and I).\

/PHILIPPIANS 2:8

And being found in appearance as a man…He humiliated Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death…even death on a Cross.\

The Lord Jesus Christ tasted the sting of death on our behalf, just as Ray’s father accepted the sting of the bee on our behalf.  For believers in Christ, because of our Lord and Savior’s sacrifice at the Cross, we are no longer afraid of death.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 55 to 57…

/FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:55

“O death, where is your victory? O grave, where is your sting?”\

/FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:56

“The sting of death is sin…and the power of sin is the law…”\

/FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:57

“…but thanks be to God the Father, who gives us believers in Christ the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”\

As believers in Christ we taunt death.  Satan, the enemy of God, and his world system of thought, always score what they think are victories.  For example, they thought crucifying our Lord was a victory.  But three days later He was resurrected from the dead, vindicating Him, proving that He is Deity, and elevating Himself to the place of honor, seated at the right hand of His Father, the Majesty on High, waiting for the day described in Hebrews, Chapter 10, Verses 11 to 14…

/HEBREWS 10:11

Every Levitical priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices…which can never take away sins…\

/HEBREWS 10:12

…but the Lord Jesus Christ…having offered one sacrifice for sins (the offer of Himself)…one sacrifice for all time…sat down at the right hand of God the Father…\

/HEBREWS 10:13

…waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.\

/HEBREWS 10:14

For by ONE offering the Lord Jesus Christ has perfected for all time those who are sanctified (believers in the Lord Jesus Christ).\

At the Cross the Lord rejected independence, once and for all time.  Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 21…

/SECOND CORINTHIANS 5:21

God the Father made the Lord Jesus Christ who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf (instead of us)…so that we might become the righteousness of God the Father in union with Him.\

Those of us who depend on the Lord are righteous in God the Father’s eyes.

When we go our own way, when we assert our independence, the result is DOOM, not destiny.  There are many who think they are self-made and self-reliant.  People who think this way are deceived.

The pattern of independence is to take something of immense value, and then to destroy it while simultaneously destroying self.  That’s what those who crucified the Lord found out…they destroyed themselves in the process.

Today, if you ask Satan if he thinks he is going to win the Creator-creature conflict, he would offer a loud and resounding YES!  He thinks God will be sentimental.  He thinks God would never send one of his creatures to the Lake of Fire.  He thinks God will make a mistake.  He thinks God will change his mind at the last minute and bring everyone to heaven.

God has given Satan years of independence to prove that he can make himself “like the most high.” What a patient God we have!  Yet we also have a strategic God who made it possible through the Cross to save everyone who is willing to simply depend on His Person and His Work for salvation.  Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

/ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”\

It is not God’s intent that we destroy ourselves.  Independence, the wrong kind of independence, is destructive.

Do you depend on the Lord Jesus Christ?  Do you place your faith in Him?  Do you know that your dependence on Him determines your acceptance by His Father?

God’s enemy, Satan, encourages a do-it-yourself salvation.  Those of us who agree with him, whether it is a do-it-yourself salvation or a do-it-yourself spiritual life, are victims in bondage to a tyrant.

When we fall for the lie of independence, we doom our lives.  And if, when we do it enough times, we don’t see the error of our ways, we are fools.  Independence from God is repugnant. Proverbs, Chapter 26, Verse 11…

/PROVERBS 26:11

Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.\

Satan is a robber who seeks to ensnare us in his schemes.  He encourages us to independence and abandons us when we fail. When we choose to depend on the Lord Jesus Christ, He never allows us to be hurled headlong.  At the Cross, the Lord shows us the power of dependence.  We’re glad He did.  It is a part of the Christian experience for believers in Christ to learn what Satan is being taught…that Jesus Christ is Lord…and all of us must depend on Him for everything while depending on ourselves for nothing.

/THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Enjoying the Elements\

Obeying God’s command, we keep on celebrating CHRIST and His Cross on a regular basis…we eat to remember who He is as a PERSON…we drink to remember His WORK on the Cross…the voluntary sacrifice He made on our behalf as our sin substitute.  We are grateful for what God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ have done for us.  Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 26 to 28…

/MATTHEW 26:26

While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take…eat…this is My body (which is being broken for you).”\

/MATTHEW 26:27

And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you…”\

/MATTHEW 26:28

“…for this is My blood…the blood of a new covenant….blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of their sins.”\

As you enjoy the bread and the cup, enjoy the memory of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well. Now and always, let us keep on giving thanks that we are loved unconditionally and accepted fully by a Lord who is always there for us…the One on whom we can depend…and let’s keep on being transformed by His life, His death, His resurrection and His Word… and let’s enjoy His unconditional love.  Let’s do what He asks DAY BY DAY.

/GOD WANTS YOU!

Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life\

The closing moments of our study are for the benefit of anyone who does not have a personal relationship with the Sovereign God of the Universe, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We want you to know that GOD WANTS YOU.

When a person evangelizes to you, they are presenting a gospel message for your consideration. They know they cannot “convert” you, although the pressure you feel might make it seem that’s what they want to do. Most are simply giving you the facts to consider…facts that you may or may not know.  Facts that you may or may not want to accept.

If you have ever had Jehovah’s Witnesses come to your door, they are

evangelizing to you. If you have ever had members of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints come to your door, they are evangelizing to you.  Unfortunately both of those groups are inviting you to share eternity with them in the Lake of Fire, because neither of these two religions believe that Jesus Christ is God.  I have family members who are part of one of those religions, and in spite of my best evangelism efforts, they don’t want to hear a thing I have to say.

Many parents are leading their children to DOOM…an eternity in the Lake of Fire.  If you want to assess whether or not you are a good parent, just ask yourself a simple question…are you influencing your children to have a relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Sovereign God of the Universe? He is the only way to get to heaven…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

/JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation), and I am the truth (through the gospel message…the Word of God), and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father (in heaven) but through believing in Me.”\

If a gospel message makes it sound like you have to work to get to heaven, it’s probably a false gospel message.  Second Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 1 warns…

/SECOND PETER 2:1

But false prophets also arose among the people…just as there will also be false teachers among you…who will secretly introduce destructive heresies…even denying the Master (the Lord Jesus Christ) who bought them (who created them), bringing swift destruction upon themselves.\

Romans, Chapter 11, Verse 6 says…

/ROMANS 11:6

But if salvation is by grace (a free gift from God), and of course it is, it is no longer on the basis of (your) works…otherwise grace is no longer grace.\

Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 4…

/ROMANS 4:4

Now to the one who works (for salvation), his wage (for his work) is not credited (to his account) as a favor (from the grace of God), but (his wage is credited) as what is due for the work.\

John, Chapter 3, Verse 36 warns…

/JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment… but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”\

John, Chapter 3, Verse 17…

/JOHN 3:17

For God the Father did not send God the Son into the world to judge the

world…but the Father sent the Son into the world that the world might be

 saved through Him.\

Take the free gift of eternal life right now!  There’s no time to waste!  God wants you.  If you want to go to heaven when you close your eyes in this life, simply believe of the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
