Welcome to Barah Ministries…an intimate, local Christian Church with worldwide impact.  My name is Pastor Rory Clark.  Welcome to this Bible lesson!  Who is Jesus Christ?  At Barah Ministries we know this truth…that JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.  When He came to His own people, the Jews, they did not believe that He is their Messiah…John, Chapter 8, Verses 57 and 58…  

 

JOHN 8:57

The Jews said to Jesus, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

 

JOHN 8:58 

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM (I existed as the Lord…God the Son).”

 

The term I AM is a term that refers to Deity.  The Lord is the exact same as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in essence, and as such, He has always existed, for all eternity, with God the Father and with God the Holy Spirit.  As the Lord He is God the Son…100% Deity…He’s fully God…He is also JESUS…the Christ…the Jewish Messiah…100% true humanity and fully man…and His two separate and distinct natures are combined in one Person.  Nothing in the universe happens without the Lord’s permission.  

 

Why does Barah Ministries exist?  At Barah Ministries, we introduce people to the Lord.  We make a difference by teaching the Word of God verse-by-verse from the Lord’s perspective and not from man’s perspective.  Barah Ministries is provided by God for the benefit of unbelievers and believers.  We give unbelievers the gospel message…the good news concerning Jesus Christ’s salvation offer.  We teach believers the Word of God, the Bible, the inerrant Canon of Scripture so those who study can have a deep, intimate, and personal relationship with the Lord.  We encourage believers to gather themselves together with other believers and not to retreat to doing everything on line.

 

Why study the Word of God?  The Bible is the only book in the world with accurate prophecy!  First Peter, Chapter 1, Verses 24 and 25…

 

FIRST PETER 1:24

“All flesh is like grass…and all the flesh’s glory is like the flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower falls off…

 

FIRST PETER 1:25 

…but the word of the Lord endures forever.”  And this is the word which was preached (as good news) to you.

 

We implore you to always compare what you learn, both at Barah Ministries and in the world, with what the Bible has to say.  

 

God has an enemy…Satan…whom God made ‘the ruler of this world.’  He is a deceiver who deceives everyone in the world, including you.  Paul laments in Second Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verse 3…

 

 SECOND CORINTHIANS 11:3

I (Paul) am afraid that just as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness (insidious deception) …your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.

 

Satan's temptations are directed at our egos.  He wants to puff us up with arrogant pride so that we will rebel against God and His direction.  Peter warns us in First Peter, Chapter 5, Verses 5 to 7…

 

FIRST PETER 5:5b

…God is opposed to the proud (the arrogant believer)…but He gives grace to the humble (believer).

 

FIRST PETER 5:6 

Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God…that He may promote you at the proper time…

 

FIRST PETER 5:7 

…slamming all your cares on His back…because He cares for you.

 

God considers your problems, including Satan’s temptations, to be His responsibility.  Allow yourself to be humbled by Him!

 

TODAY'S BIBLE LESSON

The Author of Colossians is “ApPAULling!”

 

We have begun our study of the next biblical letter on our agenda, and we’re overviewing what we’ll be learning by answering several questions.   You’ll remember last week we asked, “Who wrote the letter we are about to study?”  The answer?  The apostle Paul wrote the letter.  The next question, “Who is the letter directed to?”  The letter is directed to a group of first-century believers in Christ who live in a small town in modern-day Turkey…a nothing town in the middle of nowhere.  The third question, “Where do the people live who are receiving the letter?”  The believers live in Colossae, about one hundred miles inland from Ephesus.

In today’s lesson, we’ll answer the question, “What do we know about the author of the letter?”  We’ll see what the bible has to say about Saul of Tarsus, also known as Paul, who wrote this letter.  Christians tend to be really judgmental of the Pastors with whom they study…I wonder what they’d think if they knew that most of the New Testament letters are written by the worst person of all time…a man most people would find “apPAULling” … no pun intended.  We look forward to learning about this person, one of the most interesting selections the Lord made when He chose apostles.

 

Happy Fourth of July!  Today we celebrate freedom in the United States of America.  Little did we know how easily we would be willing to abandon our freedom voluntarily in fear of a virus.  As we celebrate America’s 245th birthday, also known as Independence Day, I can’t help but think our founding fathers would be dissatisfied with what we have done with the country.  We are anything but “independent” and we’re certainly not "united."  However, as Christians, we don't lose heart, because we know that we make a difference in this world, and we know the Lord Jesus Christ still controls history.  Hebrews, Chapter 1, Verse 3…

 

HEBREWS 1:3

And the Lord Jesus Christ is the radiance of God the Father’s glory…and He is the exact representation of the Father’s nature…and Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…

 

As we do every Independence Day, let us be reminded both of what this country stands for and how it began by listening to The Declaration of Independence.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America…

 

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.  We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. In every stage of these Oppressions, we have Petitioned for Redress in the humblest terms.  Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

 

Father, thank you for the tribulation and the challenges of living in a world where chaos is rampant…thank you for giving us brave men and women who dare to stand on principles and who are willing to do what's right…thank you for the clarity that Your personal plan for us gives to our lives…thank you for the confidence a relationship with You and Your Son, our Lord and Savior, brings to our existence…and thank you for the direction provided by God the Holy Spirit…

 

…help us to stop counting on ourselves for power, and instead let us remember to count on You…give us lives that are beyond our wildest dreams…surround us with people who are on our side, and who love obeying Your will…

TODAY'S BIBLE LESSON

The Author of Colossians is “ApPAULling!”

 

Paul is the author of the letter to the Colossians.  There have been many things said about him throughout history, but none of the things either said or written by human writers could be more convincing than the things said about him in the inerrant Canon of Scripture, the Bible, a book of absolute truth.  Here are a few of the many things you should know about him.  

 

  1. Paul Was a “Hater” of Christians

 

Paul is the hand-picked choice of the Lord Jesus Christ to write the mystery doctrine of the Church Age.  So it’s a bit ironic that the Lord would pick such a “hater” to do his work.  Several things made him perfect for the job in God’s eyes…Paul knew the Jewish culture and language well (Hebrew)…he was raised in Tarsus, so he was well acquainted with the Greek culture and its philosophies (he knew the Greek language)…he had all the privileges afforded to a Roman citizen…he was trained in Jewish theology …and he was capable in a secular trade, tentmaking, so he was able to support himself.  God gave him zeal (dioko)… leadership qualities…and theological insight.

 

But he was a hater of Christians. Christianity was spreading like wildfire, and Paul intended to stamp it out.  Anyone or anything that threatened the Jewish culture and the Mosaic Law was Paul’s target.  Acts, Chapter 9, Verses 1 and 2 describe him…

 

 

ACTS 9:1

Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest…

 

ACTS 9:2 

…and asked for letters from the high priest to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if Paul found any belonging to The Way (Christians)…both men and women…he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

 

This was a request for extradition which Paul was influential enough to secure.

 

  1. Paul was a Persecutor of the Church

 

Paul was a relentless persecutor...a murderer of Christians.  He is the worst person of all time.  The Lord was not pleased with Paul’s conduct and the Lord knocked Paul off of his high horse.  Acts, Chapter 9, Verses 3 and 4…

 

ACTS 9:3

As Paul was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him…

 

ACTS 9:4 

…and Paul fell to the ground and heard a voice (from heaven) saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

 

The Lord considered it a personal affront that Paul was persecuting His believers.  By the way…Saul of Tarsus is his given name…Paul was his Roman name.  It was quite common for people of the day to have a Greek name and a Roman name…just like it was common for the pantheon of “gods” to have Greek and Romans names.  For example, you’re familiar with Cupid…his Roman name is Cupido…his Greek name is Eros…we get the word erotic from this name.

If you take a look at the map you got today, on the right side, you can approximate the distance between Jerusalem and Damascus.  Paul had to be quite zealous to traverse one hundred and thirty-six miles on foot or by a beast of burden.  It was a time-consuming and expensive trip.  Paul was up to it.  Paul describes himself in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 9 and 10…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:9 

For I (Paul) am the least of the apostles…and I am not fit to be called an apostle…because I persecuted the church of God.

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:10 

But by the grace of God, I am what I am…and His grace toward me did not prove vain…but I labored even more than all of them…yet not I (doing the labor)…but the grace of God (working) within me.

 

  1.  Paul was an Apostle

 

By the grace of God, Paul was an apostle.  As you’ll remember, an apostle is someone who actually has seen the resurrected Lord.  Paul did…he heard him on the Damascus Road and he met Him during his training program to become the apostle to the Gentiles.  Here’s how Paul describes his apostleship in Romans, Chapter 1, Verses 1 to 7…

 

ROMANS 1:1 

This letter is written by me, Paul, a bond-servant and voluntary slave of Christ Jesus…by calling an apostle…and set apart by God the Father for the dissemination of the gospel message of God the Father…as a minister…

 

ROMANS 1:2 

…and this is the gospel message that God the Father promised beforehand to the human race through His prophets in the holy Scriptures of the Old Testament…

 

ROMANS 1:3 

…a gospel message concerning God the Father’s Son…the Lord…who was born of a descendant of David…according to the flesh…as true humanity… whose name is Jesus…the Christ (the Jewish Messiah)…

 

ROMANS 1:4 

…and Jesus Christ was declared the Son of God with enabling power through His resurrection from the dead…accomplished through the enabling power of the God who is the Spirit of holiness…God the Holy Spirit…we are talking about this Jesus…the Christ…our Lord…God the Son…

 

ROMANS 1:5 

…through whom I, Paul, have received from God the Father both grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ’s Person…

 

ROMANS 1:6 

…among whom you…as believers in Christ…also are the possession of Jesus Christ by calling…

 

ROMANS 1:7 

…and this letter is written to all of you who are the beloved…the divinely loved ones of God the Father…you believers in Christ living in Rome… saints by calling…the set-apart ones…grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

Hater…persecutor…apostle.  When we return from the break, we’ll take the offering, and then we’ll continue learning about the author of Colossians.

Let’s continue our look at the apostle Paul as we overview his letter to the believers at first-century Colossae.

 

  1. Paul Had Credentials

 

Don’t take my word for it…look at Philippians, Chapter 3, Verses 1 to 8…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:1

Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:2 

Beware of the dogs (Paul’s term for Judaizers…he was calling them unclean animals)…beware of the evil workers (false teachers)…beware of the false circumcision (the physical one)…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:3 

…for we (believers in Christ who are Gentiles…or Jews who were also Christians) are the true circumcision…we who worship in the Spirit of God and we who glory in union with Christ Jesus and who put no confidence in the flesh…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:4 

…although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I (should) far more…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:5 

…I was circumcised on the eighth day (a Jewish tradition) …I am of the nation of Israel (God’s chosen nation)…I am of the tribe of Benjamin (the toughest and the most demanding of the Jewish tribes)…I am a Hebrew of Hebrews (Jewish…of the chosen people with two Jewish parents)…as to the Mosaic Law, a Pharisee…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:6 

…as to zeal, a persecutor of the church…as to the (self-)righteousness which is in the Mosaic Law (legalism)…found blameless (in my own eyes).

 

Paul had impeccable human credentials.  It isn’t bragging if it is true!  He was better than everybody else.  But he wanted to make the point that his relationship with Christ made his birthrights, and his personal choices completely irrelevant.

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:6 

But whatever things were gain to me (in the human realm)…those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

 

It was like being a Roman Catholic and being involved in Systematic Theology for me…fifty years of LOSS!

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:8a

More than that, I count (not just these things but) ALL things to be loss when compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord (with a deep, intimate, and personal relationship)…

 

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:8a

…for whom I have suffered the loss of all things…and count them but rubbish (skubala…human excrement)…so that I may gain (a relationship with) Christ…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:9 

….and so I may be found in union with Him…not having a righteousness of my own derived from (following) the Mosaic Law…but that righteousness which comes through faith in Christ (absolute righteousness)…the righteousness which comes from God the Father on the basis of faith in Christ…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:10 

…that I may know Christ…and that I may know the power of His resurrection…and that I may know the fellowship of His sufferings…being conformed to His death…

 

PHILIPPIANS 3:11

…in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

 

The Bible has more to say about Paul, but we’ll save it for another time.  The thing that is amazing to me, and is often forgotten by Christians, is that the Lord picked the worst person of all time to accomplish the Lord’s most important task…bringing the gospel message to unbelievers and bringing the Word of God, in writing, to Christians.  

 

Yet my thought is that few of us would want an intense, passionate scumbag like Paul as a Pastor or as a friend.  Maybe we need to start seeing other people through God’s eyes instead of through distorted human eyes.  The man was amazing!

 

GOD WANTS YOU!

Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

 

The Sovereign God of the Universe, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, WANTS YOU in heaven, living with Him for all eternity when you close your eyes in this life.  The Lord says there are only two possible destinations for your eternal future…either heaven (the small gate and the narrow way) or the Lake of Fire (the wide gate and the broad way) … described in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 13 and 14…

 

MATTHEW 7:13

“Enter through the narrow gate…for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction…and there are many who enter through the wide gate.”

 

MATTHEW 7:14

“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to the resurrection life…and there are few who find the small gate.”

 

Those who are on the broad way that leads to destruction may think there is strength in numbers, yet it is not true.  Believing what everyone else believes does not save you.  Placing your confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ saves you. 

 

The Lord Jesus Christ is the author of your salvation.  He is 100% God… that’s why we call Him the Lord…and He is 100% Man…true humanity just like you and me…that’s why we call Him by His Jesus…and He is the Jewish Messiah…that’s why we call Him Christ.  Jesus says HE is the small gate. Jesus says He is the ONLY way to get to heaven…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

 

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)… and I am the truth (through the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life (eternal life)…and no one comes to God the Father (in heaven) but through believing in Me.”

 

The Lord’s plan to get you to heaven is detailed in Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

 

ACTS 16:31 

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

 

Those on the broad way that leads to destruction place their confidence in Satan’s plan for them.  God’s enemy is a liar who sponsors false teachers.  The Lord Jesus Christ warns you about them in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 15…

 

MATTHEW 7:15

“Beware of the false prophets…false teachers who come to you in sheep’s clothing (appearing harmless)…who inwardly are ravenous wolves (out to destroy your eternal future).”

 

As ravenous wolves, false teachers threaten your chance for an eternity in heaven by deceiving you with a false gospel message.  Proverbs, Chapter 14, Verse 12 illuminates the issue…

 

PROVERBS 14:12

There is a way that seems right to a man (saving yourself by thinking your good deeds will earn your salvation)…but its end is the way of death (the second death in the Lake of Fire).

 

Get yourself on the narrow way that leads to eternal life in heaven right this minute.  Tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, and that is the moment of eternal life for you.

 

Which road will you choose for your eternal life?  Don’t wait until it’s too late to consider what road you are on!  Mark, Chapter 1, Verse 15 says…

 

MARK 1:15

“The time is fulfilled…and the kingdom of God is at hand…so repent (change your mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ) and believe in His gospel message.”

 

Heed the warning in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…

 

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment… but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

 

Another warning for those who choose the broad way is offered in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 21 to 23…

 

MATTHEW 7:21

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven (by obeying the gospel message) will enter heaven.” 

 

MATTHEW 7:22 

“Many will say to Me on that day of judgment, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name…and in Your name did we not cast out demons…and in Your name did we not perform many miracles?’”

 

MATTHEW 7:23 

“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you…depart from Me…you who practice (a lifestyle of) lawlessness.’”

 

Who is this God that offers to save you?  The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4… 

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (Paul) delivered to you as of primary importance the gospel message…the good news I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

The Lord Jesus Christ has a true gospel message.  It is the will of God the Father that you believe in His Son, and that you have a personal relationship with Him.  Those who choose the narrow way have decided that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone is the ONLY ticket to heaven.  If you choose the narrow way, I’ll see you in heaven!

Let’s close with music!  In Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 1 we learn that our Lord is a fan of freedom…He is a liberator who paid with His blood to bring us out of the bondage of slavery…to sin and to the law…

 

GALATIANS 5:1
