LESSON INTRODUCTION
What does God want for Christian marriages? In the next couple of lessons, we’ll find out. Today, we’ll learn what God wants for wives so they enjoy marriage.
And as we do regularly, honoring the Lord’s command, we’ll celebrate The Lord’s Supper today. Get your bread and your wine, settle in, and join the celebration. Todaywe’ll begin with the Lord’s Supper celebration, and then we’ll transition into the lesson.
OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray...
We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…
…thanks for illustrating Your relationship with us with the metaphor of marriage…in marriage, two become one flesh just as when Your creatures believe in Your Son, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they enter into marriage with Him enabled by the baptism of God the Holy Spirit…because all believers in Christ are in union with Christand all believers in Christ are one with Christ…
…as we study marriage in the next two lessons, help us see this union as You see it…and help us bring our contributionto the marriage to edify it, regardless of the way our partner responds to our contribution…
…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
We begin today’s lesson with…
THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION (B) At the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ Taught Us the Meaning of Sacrifice
The Lord demonstrates His desire for a deep, intimate, and personal relationship with His believers by using The Lord’s Supper as a way to communicate the significance of His body and His blood to us, just as He did with His apostles on the night before His death. Luke, Chapter 22, Verses 14 to 16…
LUKE 22:14 When the hour had come and His crucifixion was near…the Lord Jesus Christ reclined at the Passover table…and His apostles reclined with Him.
LUKE 22:15 And the Lord said to the apostles, “Earnestly I have desired to eat this Passovermeal with you before I suffer…”
LUKE 22:16 “…for I shall never again eat thisPassover meal until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God the Father.”
In First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verse 26, the apostle Paul sayson behalf of the Lord…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:26a …as often as you eat this bread representing His body…and as often as you drink this cup representing His blood…as part of The Lord’s Supper Celebration…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:26b …you proclaim as a reality and you announce the significance of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross…and His resurrection from the deaduntil He comes again at the second coming.
In this month’s Lord’s Supper Celebration, we acknowledge that through His work on the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ taught us about sacrifice. It’s fitting to learn about sacrifice as we learn about what the Lord wants for our marriages, because marriage involves sacrifice. What is sacrifice?
SACRIFICE It occurs when we give up something valuable for the sake of others
John, Chapter 15, Verse 13 illustrates sacrifice…
JOHN 15:13 Greater unconditional love has no one than this…that one would lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus…the Christ…sacrificed His valuable lifeas a substitute for us.
The night before He was crucified, the Lord Jesus Christ began teaching what would be a series of lessons on the power of sacrifice. The apostle Jesus loved details one of the lessons about sacrifice in John, Chapter 13, Verses 1 to 17…
JOHN 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come and knowing that He would depart out of this world and go back to the Father the next day, loved His own disciples unconditionally who were in the world, and He loved them unconditionally to the very end.
JOHN 13:2 During hisLast Supper with them, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
JOHN 13:3 Jesus, knowing that God the Father had given all things into His hands, and knowing that He had come forth from God the Father and was going back to God the Father…
JOHN 13:4 …got up from supper, and laid aside His garments…and taking a towel, He wrapped it around Himself.
JOHN 13:5 Then Jesus poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe their feet with the towel wrapped around Him.
JOHN 13:6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, do You wash my feet?”
JOHN 13:7 Jesus said to Peter, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.”
JOHN 13:8 Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash your feet, you have no part with Me.”
JOHN 13:9 Simon Peter said to Jesus, “Lord…then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”
JOHN 13:10 Jesus said to Peter, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he is completely clean…and you are clean Peter, but not all of you are clean (the Lord was referring to Judas Iscariot).”
JOHN 13:11 For Jesus knew the one who was betraying Him…so for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
JOHN 13:12 So when Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, and when He had taken off His towel and reclined at the table again, the Lord said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
What a great question! Most of us have no idea the magnitude of what the Lord has done for us, even though we have an intellectual idea of what He has done. Jesus continued…
JOHN 13:13 You call Me Teacher and Lord…and you are right, for so I am.
JOHN 13:14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, and I did…you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
JOHN 13:15 For I gave you an example of sacrifice…and you should do as I did to you.
JOHN 13:16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
JOHN 13:17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Marriage requires sacrifice. Our salvation was paid for by sacrifice. The Lord’s sacrifice provided an example for us to follow. As He does always, the Lord neither expects us to do things He hasn’t done nor to do things He hasn’t taught us to do. He lives the examples He wants for us. Let’s give the Lord what He wants.
THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION Enjoying the Communion Elements
Bread and wine. The Lord gave us these things to remember Him. We will enjoy the elements together in a few moments as we listen to The Lord’s Supper song.
Obeying the Lord’s command, we keep on celebrating CHRIST and His Cross regularly. We eat to remember who He is as a PERSON. We drink to remember His WORK on the Cross, a voluntary sacrifice He made on our behalf as our sin substitute. Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 26 to 28 recalls The Last Supper…
MATTHEW 26:26 While His disciples were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessingHe broke the bread and gave it to the disciples saying, “Take…eat…this is My body which is being broken for you.”
MATTHEW 26:27 And when Jesus had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you…”
MATTHEW 26:28 “…for this is My blood…the blood of a new covenant…blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of their sins.”
As you enjoy the bread and the wine, enjoy your memories of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well, as we listen to the Lord's Supper song.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON The Lord Wants Wives to Have Happy Lives
LESSON PART ONE
We’re studying the final passage of the apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in Chapter 5, Verses 22 to 33, and we’ve turned it into a mini-marriage series. Last week we reviewed principles that are food for thought about marriage. Today, we study the Lord’s commands to wives. Here’s the NEW AMERICANSTANDARD translation of this short but power packed series of commands in Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verses 22 to 24…
EPHESIANS 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
EPHESIANS 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
EPHESIANS 5:24 But just as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
At first glance, the focus of this short passage is wives. As we get into the study of these verses, we’ll notice that the star of the verses is the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord wants wives to have happy lives, and as usual, He makes perfect provision for it.
As in everything the Lord teaches us through the apostle Paul, there is a structure apparent…
STRUCTURE OF THE LORD’S COMMANDS TO WIVES
What wives need to do in marriage Verse 22
Why wives need to do it Verse 23
How wives are to do it Verse 24
When we think about the entire passage…Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verses 22 to 33, it's evident that both wives and husbands have roles in marriage. A wife's role is described in the first three verses. It takes nine verses to describe a husband's role. Go figure! 😊 The Lord knows testosterone needs a little more explanation!
So let’s study the commands to wives verse-by-verse, beginning at Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 22….
EPHESIANS 5:22 Wives, be in submission to your own husbands, just as you are in submission to the Lord.
According to the Lord, wives are to be “subject to” or “in submission to” their husband’s authority. The idea of submission sends most women off the deep end because Satan, the enemy of God, has painted submission as weak. If submission is weak, then the Lord Jesus Christ is weak according to Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 5 to 8…
PHILIPPIANS 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus…
PHILIPPIANS 2:6 …who, although He existed in the exact same essence as God the Father (equal in every way)…did not regard His equality with God the Father as a thing to be seized and held onto (in other words, He didn't need to flaunt it)…
PHILIPPIANS 2:7 …instead, He emptied Himself (He took a subordinate role in God the Father’s plan for mankind)…taking on the form of a bond-servant…and being made in the likeness of men.
PHILIPPIANS 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death on a Cross.
The Lord Jesus Christ was in submission to God the Father in His time on earth, and no one would describe this submission as weak. The Lord’s submissionis described as an attitude.
What is submission? SUBMISSION The act of allowing someone else to have power over youor the condition of being controlled.
There is no one in the world who isn't under submission. We are under submission to traffic lights, speed limits, customers, coaches, Christ, and the Word of God. But when submission is introduced into the marriage relationship, all hell breaks loose because Satan distorts this powerful approach to life.
Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 22….
EPHESIANS 5:22a Wives, be in submission to your own husbands…
Those who react to the first part of this verse, the powerful second part of the verse gets completely obscured…
EPHESIANS 5:22b Wives, be in submission to your own husbands…JUST AS YOU ARE IN SUBMISSION TO THE LORD.
Wives who submit to the Lord have no issue submitting to their husbands. As mentioned earlier, wives seem to be the star of these three verses, but the Lord Jesus Christ is the real star. Why?
The Lord gifts wives with a husband. A husband’s duty to his wife is to plan for, provide for, and to protect his wife. Unfortunately, and wives will have no trouble acknowledging this, husbands are quite imperfect at doing this job. Leave it to the Lord not to leave anything to chance.
Wives…you are asked to be in submission to a quite imperfect and sinful human being, which would be a disaster if it were not for the second part of the verse where the Lord tells you what HE plans to provide for and protect you. HIMSELF!
The Lord provides you wives with an imperfect, sinful husband for a finite time here on earth. In the meantime, the Lord is the perfect and sinless One who is husbanding you wives for all eternity. Wow!
This provision may not mean much to you on the face of it. But what about this? Second Corinthians, Chapter 6, Verse 14 warns women and men…
SECOND CORINTHIANS 6:14 Do not be married to unbelievers…for what partnership have righteousness (the state of believers in Christ) and lawlessness (the state of unbelievers)…or what fellowship has light (believers) with darkness (unbelievers)?
There are Christian women who choose to marry unbelievers. Yet women are commanded by God not to marry unbelievers. When Christian women marry unbelievers…and many do marry these imperfect sinners who are sinful and finite…these women are protected by the perfect and sinless One who is husbanding them…the Lord!
I have known women who didn’t listen to the Lord, who married unbelievers, and it’s a burden to which no women should subject themselves. Imagine a Christian woman at her unbelieving husband’s funeral, knowing he is in the Lake of Fire. Grief is bad enough, but that is unspeakable grief. Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 22….
EPHESIANS 5:22 Wives, be in submission to your own husbands…JUST AS YOU ARE IN SUBMISSION TO THE LORD.
Submission is powerful for Christian women. They are in submission to the Lord, letting Him have power over them and control of them. The Lord says, If you are in submission to Me, you will have complete confidence being in submission to an imperfect and sinful man. The Lord would also say, “By the way…you chosehim…even if it was an arranged marriage. So be comfortable with your choice.”
The Lord provides protection for wives in submission. God put this protection in place so if your imperfect and sinful husband, who has authority over you invested in him by God, tells you to do something immoral or unconscionable, you don't have to listen to him.
Let’s say your husband says you can’t study the Word of God. You don’t have to listen to him. If your husband tells you to kill someone, you don’t have to listen to him. If your husband forbids you to do things that are nourishing to you like working out, you don’t have to listen to him.
There are many women who let themselves be bossed around by immature, insecure men who are not their husbands…men who ask them to break off all friendships…men who don’t “allow” their girlfriends to have male friends…and these women obey. They don’t have to obey these men, and especially if they are Christian women.
When we return from the break, we’ll take the offering and then we’ll continue learning how the Lordprepares wives to have happy lives in the institution of marriage.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON The Lord Wants Wives to Have Happy Lives
LESSON PART TWO
What does the Lord want wives to do? Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 22…
EPHESIANS 5:22 Wives, be in submission to your own husbands, just as you are in submission to the Lord.
When wives submit to their husbands, they are walking in a manner worthy of the calling to which God has called them in marriage. Why does the Lord want wives to be in submission to their husbands? Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 23…
EPHESIANS 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife…just as Christ is the head of the Church…the Lord Himself being the Savior of the body (of Christ…the Church).
The husband’s authority over the wife is a position, and the Lord places the husband there. The husband’s headship is the imperfect version of the Lord’s perfect headship…First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verse 3…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:3 But I (Paul) want you believers in Christ to understand that Christ is the head of every man…and the man (a husband) is the head of a woman (the wife)…and God the Father is the head of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Can you see the Lord’s wisdom at work by installing “headship?”
In every institution, the Lord installs a leader with invested authority to create a plan…to give provisions…and to ensure protection. Romans, Chapter 13, Verse 1…
ROMANS 13:1 Let every believer in Christ be in subjection to the civil authorities in power. For there is no civil authority in power except ones that were put in power by God the Father…and those civil authorities which exist in power are established by God the Father.
Everywhere you look there is authority…God and the individual; husband and wife; parents and children; government and citizens; coach and players; Pastors and congregation; pilots and passengers; teachers and students…authority existing for planning, provision, and protection.
News Flash: authority can be abused. Authority without freedom is tyranny. Freedom without authority is chaos. You’ve seen both in your life. The Lord did not give authority so people would be bossy and abusive, forcing compliance. When people want to follow your authority, it is much more powerful than when they feel theyhave to follow your authority.
News Flash: influence ismore powerful than authority, and wives have tremendous influence both in the marriage relationship and in a household.
There is great dialogue about authority in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. When the daughter, Toula, is complaining about her father, the mother sets her straight. Toula says, “My dad is so stubborn! What he says goes. The man is the head of the household! Blah blah blah!” The mother says, “Let me tell you something, Toula. The man is the head of the household, but the woman is the neck…and the neck can turn the head any way she wants it to go!”
Wisdom.
By asking wives to submit to their husbands, the Lord is asking wives to cooperate with the person He put in place and the person the wife chose to be with for life. It’s a fair request. The Lord is commanding women to submit, but the Lord’s commands always require voluntary acceptance. The Lord is not a tyrant or a dictator. You can choose to obey or not.
The Lord wants a husband to use his invested authority to take care of his wife… another fair request.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the highest authority in the universe…Colossians, Chapter 2, Verses 9 and 10…
COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in the Lord Jesus Christ all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form…
COLOSSIANS 2:10 …and in union with Him you believers in Christ have been made complete…and the Lord is the head…He is over all rule and all authority…
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Sovereign God of the Universe, the One with ultimate authority, and nothing happens in the universe without His permission. Wives… this is the One looking out for you in everything. In addition, the Lord is the most influential Being in the Universe. Authority and influence are a powerful combination.
How does the Lord suggest that wives be in submission to their husbands? Ephesians, Chapter 5, Verse 24…
EPHESIANS 5:24 Just as the Church is in submission to Christ, so wivesought to be in submission to their husbands in everything.
Wives imitate Christ. If you think submission makes women weak, then ask the Lord why He would do this to women. The Troof? He wouldn’t.
The Church in this verse is a reference to all Church Age believers. In divine history, this is the Church Age, a divine dispensation that follows the Lord’s resurrection from the dead.
Why were wives created by God? Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 18…
GENESIS 2:18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone…I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
Wives were created by God to sacrifice, to submit, and to serve. A smart husband doesn’t abuse this gift.
The Lord warns about what happens when husbands abuse the gift of a wife in Proverbs 21, Verse 9…
PROVERBS 21:9 It is better to live on the corner of a roof than in a house shared with an unhappy woman.
Also in Proverbs 25, Verse 24…
PROVERBS 25:24 It is better to live on the corner of a roof than in a house shared with an unhappy woman.
The Lord had to say it twice in case testosterone didn’t hear it the first time! Marriage is a collaborative partnership, and it works best for each partner when each does the job the Lord has given.
THE GOSPEL MESSAGE The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race
The next ten minutes could be the ten most important minutes of your life. You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. We want you to know that…
GOD WANTS YOU! He Wants You to Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
The Lord Jesus Christ created you! He loves you unconditionally. He forgives you for every sin you’ll ever commit. He offers you His grace when you make mistakes. He has always had you in His mind for all eternity. He knows your name. The Lord wants the best for you. Have you ever had a human being love you this way?
Well, if you don't yet have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, He considers you to be a SPIRITUALLY DEAD sinner who needs a Savior. Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 23 says… ROMANS 3:23 …all creatures have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…
Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 10 says…
ROMANS 3:10 …it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous…not even one…”
Your condition at physical birth IS NOT YOUR FAULT, but it is your circumstance.
Spiritual death, caused by sin, is a barrier between us and God. Spiritual death is the first death. Eternity in the Lake of Fire is the second death, and it’s your eternal fate if you close your eyes in this life as an unbeliever. You do not want the second death!
God wants you to have a spiritual life. First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 says…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22 …all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…but all who are in union with Christ will be made spiritually alive by God.
The Lord provides you with the Bible to illuminate the SPIRITUAL LIFE, which is your path to heaven. John, Chapter 20, Verse 31 says…
JOHN 20:31 …these things written in the Bible have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ…(the Messiah…the Son of God…the Lord…who took on human form)…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in Hisname.
The Bible contains the Lord’s exact thinking. It is your “owner’s manual” for life. The good news is the Lord Jesus Christ did something about your sin problem. He has a plan for your salvation because He doesn’t want anyone to go to the Lake of Fire…Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…
SECOND PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation, as some accuse Him of...instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any to perish (in the Lake of Fire) but for all to come to repentance (a voluntary change of mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).
By your own choice, you can be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE, making you special in God's sight…Psalm 116, Verse 15 says…
PSALM 116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones (His saints… His spiritually alive believers in Christ).
The fact that GOD WANTS YOU and has made a way for you to be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE is a great thing to know, especially as you get older, because everyone dies. What’s going to happen to you when you close your eyes in this life? Will you go to heaven or will you go to hell?
It’s your choice. How can you get to heaven? RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT you can tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that is the moment of eternal life for you. Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christand you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
The ONE WAY…the ONLY WAY to get to heaven is through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…
JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)… and I am the truth (through the gospel message in the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father in heavenbut through believing in Me.”
Who is this God who saves you? The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I (Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 …and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
Believing in Jesus Christ is acknowledging that you can’t do a thing to get to heaven on your own. You confirm that being “a good person” does not get you to heaven. It’s wiser to let God save you because once God does something, He never changes His mind! In John, Chapter 10, Verses 28 and 29, the Lord says…
JOHN 10:28 “…I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life to believers in Christ, and they will never perish…and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”
JOHN 10:29 “And My Father, who has given believers in Christ to me, is greater than all…and no one can snatch believers in Christ out of my Father’s hand either.”
You can’t lose your salvation. If ANYONE says you can lose your salvation, they are lying to you.
God has an enemy, Satan, the ruler of this world. He creates counterfeit lifestyles to blind your mind. His strategy against the human race is RELIGION, and the religions of the world mislead you into thinking you're saved when you may not be. Satan wants you to believe you can work your way to heaven, earning your own salvation.
What happens if you reject a relationship with Christ? In Matthew, Chapter 25, Verse 30, the Lord shares the consequences…
MATTHEW 25:30 “Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness (the Lake of Fire)…and in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
So, heed the warning and accept the Lord’s invitation in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in the Son of God has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
You can join me and a host of your believer friends in heaven when you close your eyes in this life! Reject SPIRITUAL DEATH. Choose SPIRITUAL LIFE right now!
