Good Morning!
Welcome to Barah Ministries…an intimate, local Christian Church with a worldwide impact. My name is Pastor Rory Clark. Thanks for listening to this Bible lesson!
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON Do Christians Have Enemies?
LESSON INTRODUCTION
In my consulting career, one of the most shocking revelations to those who sell is that they have enemies. Other companies want to destroy them, their offering, and their company.
Because people who sell never see their enemies sell, they don’t know how often their enemies plant disparaging thoughts in the minds of potential customers. When I tell of my experiences on the customer side of the desk, listening to companies trash one another, sellersare in denial about this reality. They are convinced no one hates them.
Not so for Christians. We understand God has an enemy, and His enemy is our enemy. In today's lesson, we'll learn what it means to take a STAND against the enemy. And as we do regularly, honoring the Lord’s command, we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Get your bread and your wine, settle in, and join us.
OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s hear some music! There are many times when we think we know better than God. We go against the things he advises in the Bible. The Lord provides an example inMatthew Chapter 16, Verses 21 to 23…
MATTHEW 16:21 Jesus told His disciples He must go to Jerusalemand suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes…and be killed…and be raised up from the dead on the third day.
MATTHEW 16:22 Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.”
MATTHEW 16:23 But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me…for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s interests.”
Emerson Day expresses the Lord’s sentiment in his song GET BEHIND ME.

…as we listen to the lesson today, impress on us the importance of knowing our enemy and being mindful of the traps he lays to destroy our lives…
…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON Do Christians Have Enemies?
LESSON PART ONE
We’re coming to the end of the apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians as we study the final passage of Chapter 6. Let’s hear the NEW AMERICANSTANDARD TRANSLATION of the passage and then we’ll investigate part of the passage today. Ephesians, Chapter 6, Verses 10 to 24…
EPHESIANS 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
EPHESIANS 6:11 Put on the full armor of Godso you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
EPHESIANS 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness…against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
EPHESIANS 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, having done everythingto stand firm.
EPHESIANS 6:14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness…
EPHESIANS 6:15 …and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace…
EPHESIANS 6:16 …in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
EPHESIANS 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
EPHESIANS 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit…and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints…
EPHESIANS 6:19 …and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel…
EPHESIANS 6:20 …for which I am an ambassador in chains…that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
EPHESIANS 6:21 Also, so that you may know about my circumstances and how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lordwill make everything known to you.
EPHESIANS 6:22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.
EPHESIANS 6:23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
EPHESIANS 6:24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.

Chinese Bible teacher Watchman Nee, in his book SIT-WALK-STAND, divides Paul’s letter to the Ephesians into bite-sized parts.
In the beginning of our Christian lives, we SIT with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the heavenly places, enjoying our position IN CHRIST. It’s a reality we don’t fully understand today. In the SIT potion of our Christian journey, we learn about what we responded to in the gospel message, and we learn the significance of all the Lord did for us to make the gospel a reality.
During our SIT, Godthe Holy Spirit prepares us for our WALK. We learn to “walk in a manner worthy” of the Lord during our lives here on earth. We don’t WALK in our own power. We use the enabling power of God the Holy Spirit, and Hehelps us develop a lifestyle we can be proud of as He conforms us believers in Christ to the image of God the Son, the Lord.
Finally, as we become strengthened in these two phases of Christianity (sit and walk) by God the Holy Spirit, the Spirit preparesus to STAND. He teaches us how to handle spiritual warfare with the forces of evil.
Sun Tzu, the Chinese general and strategist says in his military treatise The Art of War…
SUN TSU – The Art of War
"If you know yourself and you know your enemy you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”
SUN TSU – The Art of War
“If you know only yourself and not your enemy for every victory you gain you’ll sustain a defeat.”
SUN TSU – The Art of War
“If you know neither yourself nor the enemy you will succumb in every battle.”
As Christians, God the Holy Spirit is always preparing us to recognize the evil schemes of Satan’s kingdom of death and darkness…the WORLD…and He takes a stand for us against the forces of evil.
So let’s see what the Lord has to teach us about the enemy beginning at Ephesians, Chapter 6, Verse 10…
EPHESIANS 6:10 Finally, brethren, be strong in union with the Lord and in the strength of His might.
Paul begins with encouragement and a warning. He wants Christians to STAND strong, but he is not telling us to use personal strength. Instead, we believers in Christ rely on God the Holy Spirit’s power to fight our spiritual battles.
The believer in Christ has three enemies…SATAN…THE WORLD…and THE FLESH. All three of these enemies are more powerful than us.
SATAN is the enemy of God and the ruler of this world. He is the enemy of believers in Christ as well. The Bible gives him other names, all describing his character: the accuser of the brethren…the devil (a slanderer)…the prince of the power of the air (the ruler of the atmosphere surrounding the earth)…the serpent of old…the great dragon…Beelzebub (the lord of dung)…the tempter…the evil one…the liar…the one who keeps on fathering lies…the roaring lion…the thief… the soul murderer…the god of this age…the counterfeiter (who disguises himself as an angel of light)…and the adversary.
SATAN can only be in one place at one time and his knowledge is limited. He is not omnipresent and he is not omniscient. He is a creature, which means God created him. Yet he is the most beautiful, most brilliant genius ever to come from the hand of God, and God made him that way. Ezekiel, Chapter 28, Verses 12 to 15 describe him…
EZEKIEL 28:12 “You (Satan) had the seal of perfection…you were full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.”
EZEKIEL 28:13a “You were in Eden, the garden of God…every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; the lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald…”
EZEKIEL 28:13b “…and gold…and the workmanship of your settings and sockets was in you. On the day you were created they were prepared for you by God.”
EZEKIEL 28:14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers (the bodyguard of the throne room of God)…and I (the Lord…God the Son) placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God and you walked in the midst of the stones of fire.”
EZEKIEL 28:15 “You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness (the sins of pride and slander against God) was found in you.”
All believers in Christ are the targets of Satan and his evil minions…the fallen angels, also known as demons…First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 8…
FIRST PETER 5:8 Be of sober spirit…be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
The “WORLD” isa system of thought that opposes God. It’s the system running the cosmos in which we live.First John, Chapter 2, Verses 15 to 17 warn believers in Christ about the WORLD…
FIRST JOHN 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If (3) anyone loves the world, the unconditional love of God the Father is ABSOLUTELY not in him.
FIRST JOHN 2:16 For the things in the world…like the lust of the flesh…and the lust of the eyes…and the boastful pride of life…is not from the God Father…it’s from the world.
FIRST JOHN 2:17 The world and its lusts are passing away…but the one who does the will of God the Father lives forever (eternal life…the resurrection life…a life gifted by God to believers in Christ).
The FLESH is Satan’s agent inside each of us. It is the remnant of the dead sin nature that opposes God. It can’t do a thing to please God, and it has no interest in pleasing God. The flesh hates you and everything dear to you. It wants to destroy you. It is a voice inside you always tempting you to rebel against God’s commands. According to the Lord, the flesh has production…Galatians, Chapter 5, Verses 19 to 21…
GALATIANS 5:19 Now the deeds of the flesh (the rotten fruit production of the flesh) are evident… which are: immorality, impurity, and sensuality…
GALATIANS 5:20 …idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions…
GALATIANS 5:21a …envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these…of which I (Paul) forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you in the past…
GALATIANS 5:21b …those who practice such things (as a lifestyle…a reference to unbelievers) will not (no way…not no how) inherit the kingdom of God.
The FLESH…which the Bible also calls “the old man” … is dead…but it still has a big mouth…Romans, Chapter 6, Verse 6…
ROMANS 6:6 ...our old man was crucified with Jesus in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we believers in Christ would no longer be slaves to sin...
Ephesians, Chapter 6, Verse 11…
EPHESIANS 6:11 Pick up and put on the full armor of Godso you will be able to STAND firm against the schemes of the devil.
What should be our attitude toward our enemies and toward Satan’s schemes?
C. S. Lewis was a British writer and literary scholar who professed to be an atheist for a good part of his life. He was angry because he couldn’t grasp it that the Lord would make a world with so much evil and suffering in it. The Lord pursued Lewis until he became a Christian. Lewis wrote several books on Christianity, one of them being Mere Christianity, a treatise that argues for the existence of God.
Here’s what C. S. Lewis advises about our attitude toward the devil…
C. S. LEWIS QUOTE The two equal and opposite errors regarding the devil are…
1 To not believe in his existence
2 To have an excessive, unhealthy interest in him.
True! However, ignorance of the enemy is a disaster.
Ephesians, Chapter 6, Verse 12… EPHESIANS 6:12 For our spiritual struggle is not against flesh and blood (human beings)…our struggle is against the rulers…against the powers…against the world forces of this darkness…against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
There are unseen forces and unseen creatures out to destroy the lives of believers in Christ. Yet believers in Christ do not fight FOR victory…we fight FROM victory.
We are never instructed to take the offensive against Satan and his demons. That would be a disaster. We are commanded in James, Chapter 4, Verse 7 to…
JAMES 4:7b Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
That’s a good start. We’ll finish the study of this passage next week. When we return from the break, we’ll take the offering and then we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

OFFERING INTRODUCTION
When it comes to our money, willingly and cheerfully allottinga portion of it for the Lord’s purposes ought to be primary in our minds. Proverbs 3, Verse 9 says…
PROVERBS 3:9 Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first fruits of all your produce…
Let’s welcome up Deacon Denny Goodall to help us understand why giving is so important for Christians.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION (C) At the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ Taught Us to Love Our Enemies
Welcome to the Lord’s Supper Celebration!
As we remember the Lord, let's enjoy recalling the things the Lord has done for us, especially His work on the Cross on our behalf. The Lord's Supper gives us a chance to focus on the Lord alone.
Concerning the Lord’s Supper, our God commands us in Luke, Chapter 22, Verse 19 to…
LUKE 22:19c “…keep on doing this Lord’s Supper Celebrationin remembrance of Me.”
In celebrating the Lord’s Supper, the Lord Jesus Christ wants us to make time to think about the special things in our lives. The most special relationship in our lives, critically and eternally important, whether we are believers in Christ or unbelievers, is the relationship with the Lord.
Yet the Lord’s Supper Celebration is for Christians…the born-again ones…for spiritually alive believers in Christ who were placed into union with Christ through the baptism of God the Holy Spirit at the moment ofsalvation. God the Holy Spirit turned us into eternal companions of Christ.
It is not wise to celebrate The Lord’s Supper on the move. The Lord’s Supper is a chance to be still and to reflect on the blessings the Lord sends our way. So get your bread and wine and join us for the feast.
At the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ taught us to love our enemies.
There is nothing inside of us that thinks it’s a good idea to love our enemies. Yet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ commands His believers to do so in Matthew, Chapter 5, Verses 43 to 48…
MATTHEW 5:43 “You have heard it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’”
MATTHEW 5:44 “But I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to you, love your enemies unconditionally…and pray for those who persecute you…”
MATTHEW 5:45 “…so youmake it clear you are sons of your God and Father who is in heaven…for God the Father causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous (believers in Christ) and on the unrighteous(unbelievers as well).”
MATTHEW 5:46 “For if (3) you love only those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t tax collectors do the same?”
MATTHEW 5:47 “If (3) you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Don’t the Gentiles (unbelievers) do the same?”
MATTHEW 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect (in loving others), as your heavenly Father is perfect(in loving others).”
We all have enemies whether we want them or not.
When we think about the Lord Jesus Christ, who created all creatures and loves all of His creatures unconditionally, we know He did not want any of His creatures to be enemies. So when we say that Satan and the fallen angels are enemies of God, we know it’s not because the Lord wanted it this way.
Satan and the fallen angels MADE themselves enemies of God. They rejected the Lord and His thoughts and His will and His mercy and His sacrifice on their behalf at the Cross. They wanted nothing to do with Him. They rejected His unconditional love.
What was the Lord’s attitude toward His enemies in the face of this rejection?LOVE…unconditional love. He loved His enemiesfor who they wereand who they were not. He did not change His love for His creatures because of their rejection. He went to the Cross. He died for them. He paid for their sins to make relationship possible. He gave them chance after chance after chance to be saved until the moment He had to say, “Enough is enough.”
The only reason the Lord says “enough is enough” with those who reject Him is because He has to be fair to all His creatures. He can’t treat creatures who follow His requests one way, and then treat creatures who reject His requests the same way. It wouldn’t be fair to believers in Christ to admit creatures who reject Jesus into heaven.
The Lord’s idea of fairness is to offer the creatures who reject Him an opportunity, and to let these creatures choose to accept or reject the opportunity with their will. That’s more than fair. In mercy, compassion, and love, the Lord gives His creatures an inordinate amount of time to change their minds about having a relationship with Christ.
It is God’s will to be merciful and compassionate to His enemies, loving them unconditionally. It is God’s will to be reconciled to His enemies and to redeem them. Think about how amazing the Lord’s attitude is toward those who choose to be His enemies.
Think about enemies in your own life.Perhaps you love a family member unconditionally. You want the best for them. You want a relationship with them. You don’t consider them enemies. Yet they want no part of you.
Unfortunately, you are not perfect like God is, so you may have made mistakes with those you love. They hold it against you. They have a rigid view of how you should handle them. But they are not you. You can’t handle things as they would. So the relationship breaks down, and deep resentment remains that is not easily overcome.
What does God want you to do when your enemies reject you? He wants you to do what He would do. He wants you to love them. John, Chapter 15, Verse 13…
JOHN 15:13 Greater unconditional love has no one than this…that one lay down his life for his friends.
Musical artist Prince described the Lord’s attitude toward His enemies in song…I WOULD DIE 4 U.
It's easy to love those who love us. What Christian conduct does God want when we are mistreated…when others do us harm…when others are hostile to us? How does God expect us to treat our enemies? The Lord expects the same from us regarding our enemies as He gives them…LOVE.
THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION Enjoying the Elements
Bread and wine.
The Lord gave us these things to remember Him. We will enjoy the elements together in a few moments as we listen to The Lord’s Supper Song.
Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 26 to 28 tells us the reason the Lord wants us to celebrate this meal together…
MATTHEW 26:26 While the apostles were eating, Jesus took some bread…and after a blessing…He broke the bread, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take…eat…this is My body which is being broken for you.”
MATTHEW 26:27 And when Jesus had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it…all of you…”
MATTHEW 26:28 “…for this is My blood…the blood of a new covenant…My blood…poured out for WHOSOEVER…for the forgiveness of sins.”
We celebrate to REMEMBERthat Jesus Christ died as our sin substitute…that He is risen from the dead to prove His Deity…that Jesus Christ loves us unconditionally…that Jesus Christ forgives us once and for all time through His work on the Cross…that Jesus Christ’s BLOOD paid for our sins…that Jesus Christ saved us from the wrath of God the Father…that Jesus Christ will come again to gather us unto Himself.
As believers in Christ, we celebrate through this Lord’s Supper and we are grateful that His work on the Cross gives us hope...the assurance of an amazing future.
Enjoy the elements as we listen to Prince sing I WOULD DIE 4 U.

THE GOSPEL MESSAGE The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race
The next ten minutes could be the ten most important minutes of your life. You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. We want you to know that…
GOD WANTS YOU! He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
Do you have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ? If not, God considers you to be a sinner…the description of an unbeliever. Yet as one of God’s creatures you are a focus of His concern and His mercy…Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verses 4 and 5…
EPHESIANS 2:4 But God…being rich in mercy (toward unbelievers) … because of His great unconditional love with which He loved all His creatures…
EPHESIANS 2:5 …even when we were spiritually dead…
God loves you unconditionally and forgives you totally, especially when you are at your worst. In the spiritual realm you are at your worst when you live a lifestyle in the dark, a lifestyle that follows the direction of God’s enemy, Satan, and his kingdom of death and darkness. A life in spiritual darkness is not the life God wants for you. John, Chapter 10, Verse 10 highlights the life God is eager to provide…
JOHN 10:10b I (the Lord Jesus Christ) came that My creatures may have the resurrection life (eternal life)…and have it abundantly.
The resurrection life…eternal life…is for those who live a life in the light. All of us were born in a state of unrighteousnessas members of the kingdom of darkness. Said another way, we were born physically alive and spiritually dead as ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers.
It’s not your fault you were born this way, but it is your circumstance.
Who says so? The Lord says this is true in His Word…First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a For all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human who comes to earth) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…
Living a lifestyle of darkness means we don’t have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ…First John, Chapter 1, Verse 6…
FIRST JOHN 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with God and live a lifestyle of darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth…
What’s the way out of a lifestyle of darkness? The Bible illuminates the way out…John, Chapter 20, Verse 31 says…
JOHN 20:31 …these things written in the Bible have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ…(the Messiah…the Lord…the Son of Godwho took on human form as Jesus)…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in Hisname.
The way out of darkness can be summed up in one word…BELIEVE. When you choose to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, He will usher you personally into a lifestyle of light…First John, Chapter 1, Verse 5…
FIRST JOHN 1:5 This is the message we apostles have heard from the Lord Jesus Christ personally and announce to you…that the Lord is Light…and in union with Him there is no darkness at all.
By trusting the Lord Jesus Christ to accomplish your salvation, He’ll provide you with a lifestyle in the light…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…
JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to the doubting apostleThomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (through the gospel message in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life (eternal life) …and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”
So what do you have to do to have a relationship with the Lord? Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
JUST BELIEVE!
It’s pretty simple. The Lord’s invitation is described in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I (Paul) delivered to you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 …and He was buried…and He was raised from the dead on the third dayaccording to the Old Testament Scriptures…
RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT you can have a relationship with the Sovereign God of the Universe, the Lord Jesus Christand He will welcome you into a lifestyle in the light…John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life (eternal life) right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
The Lord’s offer is directed to EVERYONE who wants to live a lifestyle in the light…in John, Chapter 6, Verse 37, the Lord says…
JOHN 6:37b …the ones who come to Me to believe inMe…I will certainly not cast out into the outer darkness…the Lake of Fire.
If you reject a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, which is your prerogative… it’s your choice to remain in spiritual darkness…Revelation, Chapter 21, Verse 8…
REVELATION 21:8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars (all descriptions of the lifestyles of unbelievers…the lifestyles in the dark)…their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Unbelievers move from spiritual death to the second death in the Lake of Fire when they close their eyes in this life. The worst part is they do so voluntarily. It is NOT God’s will for them.
Don’t let that happen to you! Live forever with God in heaven, the kingdom of light, when you close your eyes in this life. Romans, Chapter 10, Verse 13…
ROMANS 10:13 …for “whosoever will call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved by God.”
First Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 9 describes the Lord as…
FIRST PETER 2:9b …Him who has called you unbelievers out of darkness into His marvelous light…
The Lord Jesus Christ and His kingdom of light are waiting for your call.

CLOSING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s close with music! In today’s gospel message we hear the term “walk in the light.” What does the Bible mean when it asks believers in Christ, and in fact everyone, to “walk in the light?” Psalm 119, Verse 105 gives insight…
PSALM 109:105 Lord…Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
We are “walking in the light’ when we use the Word of God to illuminate the best path to walk in this life. Let’s be encouraged by June Murphy’s beautiful song… WALK IN THE LIGHT.

Almighty God and Father…
Thank you for starting us down the road of learning about our enemies….Satan, the World, and The Flesh…help us to fix our eyes on Jesus and not on the temptations of the kingdom of death and darkness…open our spiritual eyes and give us the discernment to see the enemy coming so we use Your wisdom in resisting him…
…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
