Good Morning!

This is Pastor Rory Clark welcoming you to a Bible lesson with Barah Ministries, an intimate online Christian Church teaching the Word of God verse-by-verse to the hearers the Lord provides.

No matter where you are in the world, no matter how the Lord gets this Bible lesson to you, thanks for listening!  Studying the Bible is one of the best gifts you give yourself every day.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What is Your Attitude Toward Self Christians?  Are You Happy?

LESSON INTRODUCTION

As Christians we receive instructions about life from our study of the Word of God.  In Hebrews, Chapter 12, Verse 2 the Lord wants us to…

HEBREWS 12:2a

…keep on fixing our eyes on Jesus…the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…

When we do, we develop a SINGLE-MINDEDNESS that both informs and edifies every area of our lives.

As it relates to others, in Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 3 and 4 the Lord instructs us to…

PHILIPPIANS 2:3

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit (which amounts to excessive pride in self) … instead, with humility of mind, keep on regarding one another as more important than yourselves…

PHILIPPIANS 2:4

…do not only look out for your own personal interests…instead, keep on looking out for the interests of others.

The Lord wants us to use His power to become the SUBMISSIVE SERVANTS of others as if we are lights in this dark world…because we are!

In today’s lesson, the Lord wants us to know He wants something for us as well, and the apostle Paul has a few suggestions to help us fulfill the Lord’s desire.

OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION

Let’s hear some music!

The Lord sends messages through the Word of God about our lifestyle.  He wants us to know when we are not living a lifestyle resulting in happiness, because the Lord wants us to be happy.

When the Lord corrects us, it’s called reproof.  It’s the Lord illuminating that we have strayed from the path of His righteousness.  It’s the Lord calling us to self-examination and adjustment.  We get sound advice in Job, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

JOB 5:17

“Look at how happy is the man whom God reproves…so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.”

When the Lord disciplines us, he is training us in a character pattern for our benefit.  What does the Lord want for us?  Remember the apostle Paul’s insight in Philippians, Chapter 4, Verse 11?

PHILIPPIANS 4:11b

…I (Paul) have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.

The Lord wants us to be happy regardless of circumstances.  Whatever is going on in your life right now, understand the Lord is training you.  He’s telling you what Bobby McFerrin is telling you … DON’T WORRY…BE HAPPY!

Here’s one of the most fun songs of all time.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

Heavenly Father…thank you for providing us with the owner’s manual for life, the Word of God…

Father…help us to use all the abilities You have placed inside of us…let us not waste an ounce of the greatness with which You have gifted us…in every decision, help us access the power of the indwelling Trinity…show us how to reflect Your power to those we meet so they become curious about our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ…

…make us comfortable in an imperfect world that is run by Your enemy and ours…Satan…show us how to focus on You instead of on Satan’s entrapments, so we live a lifestyle of righteousness using the power of God the Holy Spirit…

…and as things happen in our lives, Father, let them bring us JOY, causing us to REJOICE and to be HAPPY, just as You want us to be…let the things we learn today keep on moving us to a lifestyle of JOY regardless of circumstances…

…we ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What is Your Attitude Toward Self Christians?  Are You Happy?

The Lord is always willing to demonstrate the PATTERN for effective Christian living.  In Philippians, Chapter 1 the Lord suggests one key to JOY and HAPPINESS is single-mindedness, and He uses the apostle Paul as an example.  Paul has his eyes fixed on Jesus as the source of his JOY and HAPPINESS, and he is not focused on the difficulty of his circumstances in a prison cell in Rome.

As we think back on the first passage of Philippians, Chapter 2, our last lesson, the resounding message is ATTITUDE is at the source of our JOY and HAPPINESS.  The reason for the apostle Paul’s JOY and HAPPINESS is that he imitates the Lord’s attitude.  He is content despite his circumstances.  Let’s remind ourselves of what was said about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 5 to 8…

PHILIPPIANS 2:5

Keep on having this attitude in yourselves which was also the attitude in Christ Jesus…

PHILIPPIANS 2:6

…who, although He existed in the exact same essence as God the Father, did not regard equality with God the Father as a thing to be seized and held onto…

PHILIPPIANS 2:7

…instead, Jesus emptied Himself (depriving Himself of the rightful functions of Deity…in effect, making Himself a nothing) by taking on the form of a bond-servant, and by being made in the likeness of men.

PHILIPPIANS 2:8

Being found in appearance as a man, He humiliated Himself (rather than being an “entitled,” spoiled brat) by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a Cross.

In the Lord Jesus Christ’s life, we learn the PATTERN of contentment regardless of circumstances, reflected in His obedience to God the Father’s will.  Don’t ever underestimate the power that comes from obeying the Lord.

Yet it’s one thing to KNOW the pattern for JOY and HAPPINESS.  It’s another thing to be able to LIVE A LIFESTYLE that reflects JOY and HAPPINESS.  Can you do it?  Are you doing it?  Are you joyful and happy in whatever circumstances the Lord gives you?  Probably not.

Fortunately, the Lord doesn’t want you to count on yourselves for JOY and HAPPINESS.  He gives us enabling POWER to achieve JOY and HAPPINESS through the filling of God the Holy Spirit.  Are you tapping into God the Holy Spirit’s enabling power through prayer?

Today we study the second passage of Philippians, Chapter 2.  In it, Paul gives believers in Christ practical suggestions.  They are reminders that self is important, too.  Let’s hear the passage…Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 12 to 18…

PHILIPPIANS 2:12

So then, my beloved (you divinely loved believers in Christ) … just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling…

PHILIPPIANS 2:13

…for it is God the Father who is at work…indwelling you…both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

PHILIPPIANS 2:14

Do everything without grumbling or disputing…

PHILIPPIANS 2:15

…so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent children of God, above reproach, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation…among which generation you appear as lights in the world…

PHILIPPIANS 2:16

…holding fast the Word of Life (the Bible) … so that in the day of Christ I (Paul) will have reason to glory because I neither ran in vain nor toiled in vain.

PHILIPPIANS 2:17

But even if (1) I am being poured out as if I am a drink…an offering of sacrifice and service for the benefit of your faith…and that’s true for me…I rejoice…and I share my joy with you all.

PHILIPPIANS 2:18

And I urge you to rejoice in the same way and to share your joy with me.

Here’s the structure of the passage…

Verses 14 and 15

THE STRUCTURE OF THE PASSAGE

Verse 16

The Believer’s Guide

Verses 17 and 18

The Believer’s Reward

In this passage the Lord offers four imperatives to bring JOY and HAPPINESS to your life.  The imperative mood in the Koine Greek language of the New Testament is the mood of command.  What are the four imperatives in this passage?

THE FOUR IMPERATIVES (The Commands of the Lord)

1

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling

2

Don’t grumble or complain

THE FOUR IMPERATIVES (The Commands of the Lord)

3

Be glad (Don’t worry…be happy!)

4

Rejoice

As we begin our verse-by-verse study you’ll notice the commands.  Let’s begin with Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 12 and 13…

PHILIPPIANS 2:12

So then, my beloved (you divinely loved believers in Christ) … just as you have

always obeyed, not only in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling…

PHILIPPIANS 2:13

…for it is God the Father who is at work…indwelling you…both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

Never underestimate the power of obeying the Lord.

Because we are residents in Satan’s kingdom of death and darkness, it’s easy to get caught up in the things Satan’s world system of thought considers successful.  What is the image “the world” has seared into your consciousness about what brings success and joy and happiness?  Is it people?  Is it things?  Is it circumstances?  Is it environment?  Is it the picture you have manufactured in your head?  Have you bought the lie, “It would be perfect if my life was matching the picture I’ve created in my head?”

As believers in Christ, it’s tough to grasp that our lives are perfect “as is.” It’s especially difficult as we navigate adversity.

We have won the victory!  We have made the only decision that really matters in our time on earth.  We are justified by our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and He has saved us.  He has gifted us with many gifts from the moment of salvation, among them His perfection according to Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 21…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 5:21

God the Father made Jesus Christ who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf…so that we believers in Christ might become the righteousness of God in union with Him.

We ARE the righteousness of God!

Using God’s righteousness sheds light on the path we walk through the kingdom of death and darkness.

The Lord wants us to “work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.”  What does that mean exactly?  Here’s another way to look at this expression when examining the original languages…Philippians, Chapter 2, Verse 12…

PHILIPPIANS 2:12b (Pastor Rory Translation)

…keep on being astonished and keep on having respect for the way God is working out your deliverance…

No matter how you think your life is going, the Lord knows what’s perfect for you.  The Lord wants you to have a perfect life in an imperfect world.  He ALWAYS has plans for your welfare.

In the expression “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” the term WORK OUT means God is committed to bringing out the best HE PUT IN YOU.  He will work out our lives.  In the Lord’s eyes, you don’t need a role model because you’re not like anyone else and you can’t be anyone else.  You are unique.  So be yourself!

What the Lord wants is for you to discover whom He made you to be, what He put inside of you, and what He put you here to do.  Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verse 10…

EPHESIANS 2:10a

…we believers in Christ are God the Father’s workmanship, created to be in union with Christ Jesus and designed for good works…

If God left you on your own to figure out your life it would be a problem.  He didn’t.  Philippians, Chapter 2, Verse 13…

PHILIPPIANS 2:13

…for it is God the Father who is at work…indwelling you…both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

God has you right where He wants you and He is committed to working your life out.  When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering and then we’ll finish our study of the second passage of Philippians, Chapter 2.

OFFERING INTRODUCTION

Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden once said, “You can’t have a perfect day without doing something for someone who’ll never be able to repay you.”  Hebrews, Chapter 13, Verse 16 reflects this sentiment…

…do not neglect doing good and sharing…for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Our God is generous every second of every day.  As believers in Christ, we choose to reflect His generosity.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What is Your Attitude Toward Self Christians?  Are You Happy?

Welcome back!

The Lord demonstrates the pattern of righteousness for us.  He shows us the right attitude, and then He gives us the power to execute His pattern of righteousness through the enabling power of God the Holy Spirit.  Then He tells us in Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 14 and 15…

The second imperative is, “Don’t be like unbelievers!”  When unbelievers hit a rough patch, they faint in their souls.  Why?  Because they are the power behind their success.  Not so for Christians!  We are indwelled by all three members of the Triune Godhead…God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit…the Ones who power our advance.

We believers in Christ know adversity is temporary so we “grin and bear it” because Ephesians, Chapter 3, Verse 20 reminds us of our power source…

EPHESIANS 3:20

Now to God the Father…who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think…according to the divine power that works within us…

We live “in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation” … we know this too well because of First Timothy, Chapter 4, Verse 1…

FIRST TIMOTHY 4:1

God the Holy Spirit explicitly says that in every generation some believers in

Christ will fall away from the faith, instead paying attention to deceitful spirits and

doctrines of demons…”

Don’t be fooled!  Don’t listen to the world!  Don’t get caught up in perversity!  Use the lighthouse the Lord has given you as a guide for your lives!  Philippians, Chapter 2, Verse 16…

PHILIPPIANS 2:16

…keep on holding fast to the Word of Life (the Bible) … so that in the day of Christ, I (Paul) will have reason to glory because I neither ran in vain nor toiled in vain.

Paul will be evaluated for how well he provided us with truth.  Let’s follow his guidance so he is not let down in the day of evaluation.

We believers in Christ KNOW our God saves the best for last.  What is the reward for a life of single-mindedness and a life of submissive servitude?  It’s a life of JOY and HAPPINESS!  In Philippians, Chapter 2, Verses 17 and 18 the apostle Paul says…

PHILIPPIANS 2:17

But even if (1) I am being poured out as if I am a drink…emptied as an offering of sacrifice and service for the benefit of your faith…and that’s true for me…I rejoice…and I share my joy with all of you.

PHILIPPIANS 2:18

And I urge you to rejoice in the same way and to share your joy with me.

Can you be content regardless of circumstances?  Can you trust the Lord is working your life out for you?  Can you wait for the Lord’s deliverance?  I can tell you EXACTLY what will happen when He delivers you.  You won’t believe it.  It will take you years to realize that all the worry and all the consternation and all the angst was not worth it.

Without you doing a thing but enjoying the journey, the Lord worked your life out for you.  Roman Emperor and Stoic Philosopher Marcus Aurelius said…

MARCUS AURELIUS QUOTE

The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts

Attitude determines your altitude.  When you have the same attitude in yourself that was also in Christ Jesus, your single-mindedness and your submissive servitude result in you having your salvation worked out by God from within so you make a difference in the world with every person you meet, one person at a time.  Enjoy the journey to JOY and HAPPINESS.

THE GOSPEL MESSAGE

The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race

The final ten minutes of this lesson could be the ten most important minutes of your life.  You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life.  We want you to know that…

GOD WANTS YOU!

He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.

God wants a RELATIONSHIP with you!  The Lord’s half-brother says in James, Chapter 4, Verse 8…

JAMES 4:8

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

The enemy of God, Satan wants you to be part of a RELIGION.  Religion is Satan’s strategy against the human race and it is designed to make you either indifferent or antagonistic to God.  Religion works very well!  The Bible describes religion in Second Timothy, Chapter 3, Verse 5 as…

SECOND TIMOTHY 3:5

…a superficial form of godliness (a counterfeit to Christianity) … that denies godliness’ divine power…

You have a choice…RELATIONSHIP or religion…what’s your choice?

Religion can’t get you to heaven!  Religions propose that if you don’t do everything their “god” expects, their god will be disappointed.  Regardless of your best efforts to follow religious rituals, which CAN’T and DON’T get you a relationship with God, even IF you do them, the religion does not GUARANTEE you will get to heaven.

Every time a Pope of the Roman Catholic church dies, the whole world turns in fascination to a false church that sells a counterfeit to Christianity.  Roman Catholicism is one of many religions, and it is bought “hook, line, and sinker” by nearly a billion and a half people…about 20% of the world’s population.

Roman Catholicism is a COMPLETE DECEPTION.  In Matthew, Chapter 23, Verses 27 and 28, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself excoriates religion…

MATTHEW 23:27

“Woe to you religious scribes and Pharisees…you hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs…which on the outside appear beautiful…but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.”

MATTHEW 23:28

“Outwardly you appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness…

In other words, you are ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers.  Ouch!

The Bible is a gift from God that introduces the possibility of a relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verse 12 describes the power of the Bible…

HEBREWS 4:12

For the Word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword…and it’s piercing…even as far as the division of soul and spirit…of both joints and marrow…and it’s a critic of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

God’s plan is to provide the Bible to teach you the truth about how to have a relationship with Him.  Satan’s plan is to teach you lies that obscure the truth of the Bible.

One day, each one of us will die.  What happens when we close our eyes in this life?  If you have a RELATIONSHIP with the Lord Jesus Christ, counting on Him to save you, good things happen.  If you are counting on religion to save you, bad things happen.  Let’s examine Luke, Chapter 16, Verses 19 to 31 to see the difference between relationship and religion.

LUKE 16:19

“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple (the color of royalty) and in fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.”

He was wealthy.

LUKE 16:20

“And a poor man named Lazarus laid at his gate every day, covered with sores…”

LUKE 16:21

“…longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table…and besides, even the dogs were coming to lick the poor man’s sores.”

LUKE 16:22

“Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom (a compartment of Hades called Paradise) … also, the rich man died and was buried.”

LUKE 16:23

“In Hades the rich man lifted up his eyes, being in Torments (a compartment of Hades reserved for dead unbelievers) … and the rich man saw Abraham far away…and he saw Lazarus, the poor man, in Abraham’s bosom (a place of comfort).”

LUKE 16:24

“And the rich man cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus over here so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’”

LUKE 16:25

“But Abraham said to the rich man, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things (you had wealth) … and likewise Lazarus had bad things (he was poor and sick) … but now Lazarus is being comforted here in Paradise, and you are in agony (in Torments).’”

LUKE 16:26

“‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a GREAT CHASM FIXED, so

that those who wish to come from over here to you will not be able…and none may cross over from where you are to us.’”

LUKE 16:27

“And the rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, father Abraham…send Lazarus to my father’s house…’”

LUKE 16:28

“‘…for I have five brothers—in order that Lazarus may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of Torment.’”

LUKE 16:29

“But Abraham said, ‘Your brothers have Moses and the Prophets…let your brothers listen to them.’”

LUKE 16:30

“But the rich man said, ‘No, father Abraham…if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent (they’ll change their minds about having a relationship with Christ)!’”

LUKE 16: 31

“But Abraham said to the rich man, ‘If your brothers do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

When you die, you’ll go either to heaven or to the Lake of Fire.  You get to choose where you spend eternity.  The determining factor is RELATIONSHIP or religion.

God wants a RELATIONSHIP with you because He doesn’t want ANYONE to spend eternity in the Lake of Fire.  Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…

SECOND PETER 3:9

The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation as some accuse Him of… instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any of you to perish (in the Lake of Fire) … but for all of you to come to repentance (a change of mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).

Believe the Bible.  Don’t believe the doctrines of your religion.  In fact, compare

them!  For example:

The Bible says you are saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone.  Galatians Chapter 2, Verse 16…

GALATIANS 2:16

…nevertheless, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Mosaic Law but through faith in Christ Jesus alonoe…since by the works of the Law no creature will be justified.

Roman Catholicism says justification is conferred by the sacrament of water baptism (CCC, 1992).

“If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone…let him be anathema (accursed).” (Council of Trent, Canon 9).

Justification is an instantaneous change to your legal status before God whereby as a condemned sinner you are acquitted and declared to have absolute righteous… Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 3…

ROMANS 4:3

For what does the Old Testament Scripture say (in Genesis, Chapter 15, Verse 6)? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED IN GOD THE SON...JEHOVAH ELOHIM...THE LORD…AND ABRAHAM’S FAITH WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Roman Catholicism says justification is a process that renews the inner man.  It is not something that changes you legal status before God.  (CCC 2019).  Roman Catholicism says justification is temporary…it can be lost by sin and regained through the sacrament of penance (confessing your sins to a priest) … and through good works (CCC 1446 and 1861).

Biblical justification is permanent and is never lost by sin. The legal status of a justified man is as unchangeable as the righteousness of Christ.  Hebrews, Chapter 10, Verse 14…

HEBREWS 10:14

For by ONE OFFERING the Lord Jesus Christ has perfected for all time those who are sanctified (that’s believers in Christ).

The Bible and the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church are saying opposite things.  Romans Catholics call themselves Christians, yet their religion is not selling a relationship with the Lord.

If religion can’t save you, can a RELATIONSHIP with the Lord save you?  The Bible says YES in Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God…you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (through the gospel message in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life (eternal life) … and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”

Who is this God who saves you?  The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (the apostle Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

So, accept the invitation and heed the warning in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he

who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection

life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

For those who embrace a RELATIONSHIP with the Lord Jesus Christ, an eternity

in heaven is their eternal future…Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 5:8

…we believers in Christ are of good courage, I say, and prefer to be absent from the body and to be at home face-to-face with the Lord.

For those who embrace religion, Torments to the Lake of Fire is their destiny at the end of this life.  Matthew, Chapter 13, Verses 40 to 42…

MATTHEW 13:40

…just as tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.

MATTHEW 13:41

The Son of Man (the Lord Jesus Christ) will send forth His elect angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks (unbelievers)…and those who practice lawlessness (unbelievers)…

MATTHEW 13:42

and the elect angels will throw unbelievers into the furnace of fire (The Lake of Fire) … and in that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (for all eternity).

RELATIONSHIP or religion?  It’s your choice.  Make the RIGHT CHOICE… RIGHT NOW…RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT… RIGHT THIS MOMENT!

Choose a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
