TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON An Introduction to the Gospel of John
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Today we begin the study of the Gospel of John. The biblical letters called gospels…Matthew, Mark, Luke and John…are the stories of Jesus, the human name for God the Son, who came to earth as the God-man, 100% God and 100% man in one person, to free all mankind from the devastating power of sin.
At physical birth, all of us were credited with Adam’s first sin. Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12 says…
ROMANS 5:12 …through one man…Adam…sin entered into the world…and spiritual death entered the world through his sin…so spiritual death spread to all men…because all men were considered by God to have sinned when Adam sinned.
We were born spiritually dead. Adam’s sin separated us from a relationship with God from birth! There is nothing any of us could do to fix the problem. Seeing the sin plight of all mankind, a problem which kept God and man separate from each other, God the Son took on human form as Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah… to pay for the sin of the whole world with His shed blood at the Cross. He died so all of us could have the possibility to live the resurrection life…eternal life.
Jesus’ work on the Cross reconciled God and man, restoring the possibility of relationship. Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 10 says…
ROMANS 5:10 If, for the sake of argument, while we were the enemies of God the Father, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son…much more, having been reconciled to Him, we shall be saved by the Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection life.
Jesus Christ is God.
He is co-equal to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in every way, having the exact same essence as each of them. He is co-infinite. He has no limits and no boundaries such as time or space. And the Lord Jesus Christ is co-eternal, having no beginning and no ending. He is the Christ…the Messiah that was promised in Old Testament Scripture. The Gospel of John proves His Deity.
As we study the Gospel of John, believers in Christ will realize the significance of our relationship with Christ. It’s a study sure to bring tears to your eyes if you stop long enough to let John’s words sink deeply into your consciousness.
I am giddy with happiness to be able to share the lessons of this study with you so that when you meet your Creator face-to-face, you’ll know as much about Him as He has revealed in the Bible.
Please enjoy these amazing revelations and the wonders accomplished by our Lord and Savior during His earthly ministry.
OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s hear some music! As you’ll learn in the study of John’s gospel, the Lord has many names. Among them is the name the Lord revealed to Moses in Exodus, Chapter 3, Verses 13 and 14… EXODUS 3:13 Moses said to God (the Lord…Jehovah Elohim) … “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?”
EXODUS 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. What you shall say to the sons of Israel is, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
God the Son…who took on human form becoming Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah…the Great I AM…is the One Christians worship. Here’s June Murphy to sing about Him in her song…I AM.

OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray...
We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…
Father, thank you for opening up the truths of the Gospel of John so we can learn about Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…thank you for the insights on what He came to earth to do, how He did it, how He was treated, and how He overcame all the human obstacles You allowed others to inflict on Him so we could see the possibility of having JOY regardless of circumstances…
…as we ingest these lessons bit by bit, let them sink deeply into the bowels of our consciousness…show us how to feast on John’s words, and let them draw us closer in our relationship with the Lord through the knowledge and the insights provided by God the Holy Spirit as we study…
…we ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen. TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON An Introduction to the Gospel of John
LESSON PART ONE
If someone said to me, “I am willing to study the Bible, but I will only study two books. What two books should I study?” After berating them (I think the Bible calls it rebuking them), first I’d tell them to study Romans because Romans is the foundational book of Biblical Christianity. Next, I’d tell them to study the Gospel of John.
There are four gospels…Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The first three of those Gospels…Matthew, Mark, and Luke…are known as the Synoptic Gospels. Synoptic is a word you don’t hear every day, but the word at the root of synoptic is very familiar to us. It’s the word synopsis. The Biblical Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are synopses of the Lord Jesus Christ’s time on earth.
Jesus was here for thirty-three years, and in that time, He lived a perfect, sinless life even though He was subjected to temptations we can only imagine. He suffered the worst death in human history…crucifixion on a Cross…shedding His blood to pay for Adam’s sin and the sins of the whole world.
As you know, if you study with us consistently, at the beginning of the study of a new Biblical letter, we answer ten questions to introduce you to what you are about to study. Here’s the first question…
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
1 Who wrote the letter we are about to study?
The apostle John wrote the Gospel of John.
John was born into a family of Jewish fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. He was the son of Zebedee and the younger brother of James the Great. Their mother was Salome.
Here’s how John described himself in John, Chapter 13, Verse 23…
JOHN 13:23 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples (John), whom Jesus loved.
If John was nothing else, He was bold!
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
2 What do we know about the author of the letter?
We know that John wrote five books of the New Testament.
NEW TESTAMENT BOOKS AUTHORED BY THE APOSTLE JOHN
The Gospel of John First John Second John Third John The Book of the Revelation
We know that John was in Jesus’ inner circle. Matthew, Chapter 17, Verses 1 to 9…
MATTHEW 17:1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James (the son of Zebedee) and John James’s brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
MATTHEW 17:2 And Jesus was transfigured before them…and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
MATTHEW 17:3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.
MATTHEW 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here…if You wish, and I know You do, we will make three tabernacles here…one for You…and one for Moses… and one for Elijah.” MATTHEW 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased…listen to Him!”
MATTHEW 17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified.
MATTHEW 17:7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up…and do not be afraid.”
MATTHEW 17:8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus alone.
MATTHEW 17:9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell this vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”
What else do we know about the author of the Gospel of John?
We know Jesus asked John to take care of His mother as He hung from the Cross. John, Chapter 19, Verses 25 to 27…
JOHN 19:25 Standing by the Cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister (Mary the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.
JOHN 19:26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom Jesus loved (John) standing nearby, Jesus said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
JOHN 19:27 Then Jesus said to John, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, John took Mary into his own household.
We know that John lived to nearly 100 years old, dying peacefully in Ephesus around 100 AD. He is the only apostle who did not die a martyr's death. QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
3 When did the author write the letter?
It is believed John wrote the Gospel of John between AD 85 and AD 90. The letter has twenty-one chapters and eight hundred and seventy-nine verses.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
4 To whom is the letter directed?
The letter is directed to all mankind to communicate the simple truth expressed in John, Chapter 20, Verses 30 and 31…
JOHN 20:30 There were many other signs Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in the Bible…
JOHN 20:31 …but these things written in the Bible are written so all of you may BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah)…God the Son in human form…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in His name.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
5 What do we know about the place where the people who received the letter live?
Since the letter is directed to all mankind, the letter is for people who live all over the world. The omnipotent Lord is powerful enough to get this letter to people all over the world in a form and in a language each can understand.
When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering and then we’ll get answers to the final five questions we answer at the beginning of our study of a Biblical letter.
We’ll get to ask the Lord Jesus Christ one day, “Why did You save us?” June Murphy tells us in today’s break song…ALL BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO.

OFFERING INTRODUCTION
God always encourages generosity. Proverbs, Chapter 11, Verse 25 says…
PROVERBS 11:25 The generous person will be prosperous…and he who waters will himself be watered.
Be generous so those you help with your contributions may receive the gospel message implanted…and let the Word of God sprout from within them through the seeds nourished by God…and let the Word of God give them the strength to put one foot in front of the other during times of spiritual turmoil…especially our brothers and sisters in the persecuted churches around the world.
Let’s listen to Deacon Denny Goodall present one of his always thoughtful and always inspiring offering messages.
THE OFFERING Deacon Denny Goodall
OFFERING VERSE
COLOSSIANS 3:1 Therefore, if you believers in Christ have been resurrected from the dead with Christ…and of course you have…keep on seeking the things above (eternal things) …where the Christ is…seated at the right hand of God the Father (and you believers in Christ are seated there, too.)
OFFERING VERSE
COLOSSIANS 3:2 Set your mind and its longings on the things above and not on things that are on earth.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON An Introduction to the Gospel of John
LESSON PART TWO
We continue our introduction to the Gospel of John with the final five questions we answer at the beginning of our study of a Biblical letter.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
6 Where was the author when he wrote the letter?
John was living in Ephesus when he wrote the letter. Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the coast of Ionia, in present-day Selçuk (Selchuk) in the İzmir Province of Turkey.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
7 What was God’s purpose in getting the author to write the letter?
The Lord wanted John to write a letter on the Son of God aspect of His being so that all may BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ, placing their trust in His Person and His work for their salvation. Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God…you and everyone in your household who also believes.” The Lord wanted John to write a letter so all may learn that Jesus Christ is God. Colossians, Chapter 2, Verse 9…
COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of Deity (“Godness” … Divinity) dwells in bodily form…
The Lord wanted John to write a letter so that all may have insights into Jesus’ earthly ministry, the three years of His life on earth prior to His crucifixion. John concentrates on different aspects of Jesus’ life than the synoptic gospels. We’ll learn John’s focus in future lessons.
The Lord wanted John to write a letter so that all may SEE the Person of Jesus Christ, just as the apostles did…John, Chapter 1, Verse 14…
JOHN 1:14 And the Word (the Lord…God the Son) became flesh (as Jesus…the Christ) … and He lived among us…and WE APOSTLES SAW HIS GLORY WITH OUR OWN EYES…the glory of the only begotten One from the source…God the Father…full of grace and full of truth.
The Lord wanted John to write a letter so that all BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ. You’ll see the word BELIEVE nearly one hundred times in this letter.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
8 What does God want the author to communicate to the letter’s intended audience?
God wants all mankind to know that BELIEVING in the Lord Jesus Christ is the best decision anyone makes in this lifetime. John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
Rejecting a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is a horrible decision with eternal consequences.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
9 What is the central message of the letter?
The central message, the thesis of the letter, is that Jesus is the Christ…the Messiah…the divine Son of God the Father. He is described in several places in the Bible, especially in the gospels. John, Chapter 1, Verses 1 to 3…
JOHN 1:1 In the beginning was the Word (the Lord…God the Son) … and the Word (the Lord…God the Son) was with God the Father…and the Word (the Lord…God the Son) was God.
JOHN 1:2 The Lord…God the Son…existed from the beginning (not a beginning) with God the Father.
JOHN 1:3 All things came into being through the Lord…God the Son…and apart from Him not even a single thing came into being that has come into being.
Colossians, Chapter 1, Verses 15 to 17…
COLOSSIANS 1:15 The Lord Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God and Father and He is the firstborn of all creation.
COLOSSIANS 1:16 For by the Lord…God the Son...all things were created…things in the heavens and things on earth…both visible and invisible…whether thrones or powers…or evil rulers or authorities—all things have been created through the Lord and for the Lord.
COLOSSIANS 1:17 The Lord existed before all things…and in the Lord...all things hold together.
Colossians, Chapter 2, Verse 9…
COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form…
Hebrews, Chapter 1, Verse 3…
HEBREWS 1:3 …and Jesus is the radiance of God the Father’s glory…and Jesus is the exact representation of God the Father’s essence…and Jesus upholds all things by the Word of His power. When Jesus had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty (God the Father) on high…
Parts of the Godhead’s essence is captured with the abbreviation JR SOOO LIVE.
THE GODHEAD’S ESSENCE
Justice God is fair Sovereignty God is supreme, autonomous, and needs neither help nor advice from anyone
THE GODHEAD’S ESSENCE
Omniscience God knows all that is knowable Omnipotence God has ultimate power Omnipresence God is everywhere simultaneously
THE GODHEAD’S ESSENCE
Love God IS unconditional love Immutability God never changes
THE GODHEAD’S ESSENCE
Veracity God IS the truth and He always tells the truth Eternal God has no beginning and no ending
John, Chapter 3, Verses 16 to 18… JOHN 3:16 “God the Father loved the world unconditionally…and He loved the world so much…that He gave His uniquely born Son (the God-man…the Lord…Jesus…the Christ…to be crucified on a Cross…so that WHOSOEVER believes in Him shall never perish, but has eternal life (the resurrection life).”
JOHN 3:17 For God the Father did not send God the Son (the Lord) into the world to judge the world…but God the Father sent the Son into the world that the world might be saved through Him.
JOHN 3:18 He who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ is not judged…he who does not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God the Father.
QUESTIONS TO BEGIN THE STUDY OF A BIBLICAL LETTER
10 What relevance does the letter have to our lives today?
Anyone who wants to be saved can be saved by simply BELIEVING in the Lord Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul puts it well in Romans, Chapter 1, Verse 16…
ROMANS 1:16 For I (Paul) am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ…for the gospel is the divine power of God the Father for salvation to everyone who believes…to the Jew first (chronologically) and also to the Greek (the Gentiles).
The structure of John’s gospel looks like this…
STRUCTURE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Chapters 1 to 4 The Savior Comes into the World
Chapters 5 to 8 Highlight the Hostility Toward Jesus from Religious Leaders
STRUCTURE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Chapters 9 to 12 The Lord Jesus Christ Teaches His Apostles
Chapters 13 to 17 The Lord Prepares for the End of His Life on Earth
STRUCTURE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Chapters 18 to 21 The Betrayal of the Lord and His Subsequent Trial, Death, Burial, and Resurrection from the Dead
You’re going to enjoy getting to know the Lord! Fasten your seatbelts. You’re in for the education of your lives!
THE GOSPEL MESSAGE The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race
The final ten minutes of this lesson could be the ten most important minutes of your life. You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. We want you to know that…
GOD WANTS YOU! He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
If you are an atheist, this gospel message is for you.
I had an interaction with an atheist recently, and here’s what she said…
AN ATHEIST SPEAKS
“I don’t believe there is a heaven or a hell. And I don’t believe there is a God. I am an atheist. There are so many religions and everyone believes a different thing. It makes no sense.”
AN ATHEIST SPEAKS
“So I don’t want to hear about God. Everyone is free to believe what he wants to believe. I especially don’t want someone shoving their beliefs down my throat as if they are going to change my mind.”
I don’t remember what prompted her tirade, and it wasn’t that I was shoving anything down her throat, but she didn’t say another word to me for the next two days when I was in her presence.
Atheism is the rejection of the existence of deities. This gospel of Jesus Christ is the hope that if you are atheist, which is your choice, you haven’t stopped looking for evidence of the existence of God. The God who created you wants a relationship with you.
It is unlikely an atheist would think of himself as a fool. But in Psalm 14, Verse 1, the Lord says…
PSALM 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
Atheists say there is no God. The Lord thinks that’s foolishness coming from a fool.
So is there a God?
That’s a question everyone who comes to the earth must answer. Answering questions requires research to find evidence that reveals the truth. Beliefs are only true to the degree that they are the same as the truth.
Christians have done the research. Our faith in God is not blind. Our faith is not a set of beliefs. Faith is what anyone has after doing research to uncover evidence of what is true. I have faith an American Airlines pilot knows how to get a plane off the ground and land it safely in any destination, because I have flown over ten million miles with American Airlines. I have first-hand knowledge of their competence. When I book a flight with them, I have faith they will get me to my destination. There are many sources of evidence about God’s existence, and the Bible is the best of them. The Bible suggests an answer to the question, “Is there a God?”
Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12 illuminates a problem for the whole human race including atheists…
ROMANS 5:12 …through one man…Adam…sin entered into the world…and spiritual death entered the world through his sin…so spiritual death spread to all men…because all men were considered by God to have sinned when Adam sinned.
You were born in a state of sin. Just so you don’t blame Adam for your plight, you commit personal sins as well according to Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 23…
ROMANS 3:23 …all creatures have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…
Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 10 says…
ROMANS 3:10 …it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous (free from sin)…not even one…”
Your spiritually dead condition at physical birth IS NOT YOUR FAULT, but it is your circumstance.
Because you are born spiritually dead, you require spiritual life. The only Being who can gift you with spiritual life is God.
So where do you get your evidence about the existence of God? Who are your guides? Famous atheist Bertrand Russell says, “There can’t be a practical reason for believing what isn’t true.” He applied this to Christianity, but it applies to atheism as well.
Christians aren’t guided by atheists, or by any group of people or beliefs. Christians are guided by truth. The Lord says in Second Timothy, Chapter 3, Verse 16…
SECOND TIMOTHY 3:16a All Scripture is God breathed…
In other words, the Lord says the human writers of Scripture wrote down exactly what He wanted them to write, revealing His thoughts to the human race. If what the Lord is thinking and saying is true, then we can grasp the other truths He articulates in writing for our benefit.
What is God’s plan for the human race? First Timothy, Chapter 2, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST TIMOTHY 2:3 This is what is good and acceptable in the sight of the God who is our Savior (the Lord Jesus Christ)…
FIRST TIMOTHY 2:4 …who wants all men to be saved and who wants all men to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Here’s the truth from the Lord Himself. The ONE WAY…the ONLY WAY to get to heaven…is through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…
JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (through the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father (in heaven) but through believing in Me.”
Who is this God who saves you? The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I (Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel of Jesus Christ I also received from God the Father…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 …and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT…RIGHT NOW…RIGHT THIS MOMENT…you can go from atheist unbeliever to believer in Christ with a single, simple thought…Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God…you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
To BELIEVE means to accept God’s word for what it takes to be saved. So, accept the invitation and heed the warning in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in God the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead, the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
The Lord wants a RELATIONSHIP with you because He doesn’t want ANYONE, not even atheists, to spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…
SECOND PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation as some accuse Him of… instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any of you to perish (in the Lake of Fire) … but for all of you to come to repentance (a change of mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).
PLEASE…don’t be close minded like the atheist mentioned earlier. She’ll be playing her tirade in her head for all eternity and the Lord will help her realize she was standing right next to a Christian Pastor who could have given her the accurate gospel of Jesus Christ if she wanted it.
Instead, she forced the Pastor to follow the Lord’s advice in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 6…
MATTHEW 7:6 “Do not give what is holy (like the Gospel of Jesus Christ) to dogs…and do not throw your pearls before swine…or they will trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces.”
As Christians, we have no obligation to evangelize to those who have made it clear they don’t want to hear it. Yet we do. And we pray for those who are closed minded about the Lord, that He who knows all that is knowable, will bring the gospel message to them from someone they trust enough to listen to.
If you’re an atheist, keep on doing the research. You will find overwhelming evidence there is a God. Design demands a designer. The Lord is the designer of the heavens, and the earth, and the moon, and the stars, and YOU! Keep on looking until you find your God! He’s certainly looking for you!

CLOSING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s close with music! Jesus is exciting, and He is able to get us excited! So it was with a woman at a well in John, Chapter 4, Verses 9 and 10…
JOHN 4:9 The Samaritan woman said to Jesus, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
JOHN 4:10 Jesus answered and said to the Samaritan woman, “If you knew the gift of God the Father, and if you knew who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Our Lord…Jesus…the Christ is, among the many descriptions of Him, the living water. The Samaritan woman was excited…John, Chapter 4, Verses 28 and 29…
JOHN 4:28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men…
JOHN 4:29 “Come see a man who told me all the things that I have done…this is not the Christ (the Messiah), is it?” Here’s June Murphy to tell us all about our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in her song COME SEE A MAN.
