Romans 145: Romans 5 - What Does it Mean to be In Adam?

Welcome To

BARAH MINISTRIES

a Christian Church

Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.  In Revelation Chapter 3, Verses 14 to 16, the Lord Jesus Christ says to John, the author of the book of Revelation…

REV 3:14

“To the angel (the Pastor) of the church in Laodicea write…

REV 3:15-16

‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth.’

The Lord Jesus Christ is always monitoring our spiritual status, and He is always clear where He wants us to be…HOT!  As we study the next passage of Romans, Chapter 5, we are learning that you can be cold, In Adam, or you can be hot, In Christ, or you can settle for one of Satan’s perverted attempts to sell you the idea that it is both okay and possible to be both places at once.  But you believers did not learn the Lord Jesus Christ this way!  Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 1 says…

GAL 5:1

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm in the freedom and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

Paul had to ask the believers of the Galatian Church why they switched from the life of freedom to the life of slavery…

GAL 3:1

You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you…

Welcome to a place where the truth of the word of God can set you free.

TODAY’S STUDY

What Does it Mean to be In Adam?

Turn to Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12…let’s look at the next passage, Romans, Chapter 5, Verses 12 to 21…

<Read Romans, Chapter 5, Verses 12 to 21>

God loves clarity.  And because He does, you know that you cannot mix the

earthly realm and the heavenly realms.  Satan says you can…John, Chapter 10, Verse 10…

JOH 10:10

The thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (the Lord Jesus Christ) came so that believers in Christ may have the ZOE life (eternal life…the resurrection life), and have it abundantly.

God loves abundance as well!  The life He offers us In Christ is a life of abundance…and He put to death, at the Cross, the life of scarcity In Adam.

Let’s look into the details of this passage beginning at Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12…

ROM 5:12

Therefore, just as through one man, Adam, sin entered into the world, and spiritual death through sin, and so spiritual death spread to all men, because all men were considered by God to have sinned when Adam sinned…

The important idea to bring forward about this verse is what happened to you when the federal head of the human race sinned.  His sin created a situation for all mankind…death…spiritual and physical…Psalm 146, Verses 3 and 4 say…

PSA 146:3-4

Do not trust in princes…do not place your trust in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth (he gets cremated or buried); in that very day (of his physical death) his thoughts perish.

As the representative of the human race…the result of Adam’s work was passed on to us.  Turn in your bibles to Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 15…

GEN 2:15

Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

Adam’s job was to serve the Lord.

GEN 2:16

The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely…”

The Lord is saying, I am giving you everything…all I ask of you is one thing…

GEN 2:17

“…but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die (dying you will die).”

It is no different for us today.  God is asking us for one thing…faith.  With faith…life.  Without faith…death.

GEN 2:18

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

A helper suitable is also translated … “someone corresponding to him” … a perfect fit.  What he lacked, she supplied.  What she lacked, he supplied.  IN other words, by creating woman, the Lord filled man up to all the fullness of God.  Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 19…

GEN 2:19

Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every

bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

Mankind has dominion over animals.

GEN 2:20

The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.

There was not found an animal that was corresponding to Adam…

GEN 2:21

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

The Lord does more for us when we sleep than we do for ourselves when we are awake.

GEN 2:22

The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

One man.  One woman.  This is God’s singular design.  Pervert it however you want.  It does not change God’s design.

GEN 2:23

The man said…“This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

The perfect fit.  The initiator and the responder joined as one.

GEN 2:24

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

GEN 2:25

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Whatever happened to those days?  J  Take a five-minute break.

BREAK

Somewhere over the Rainbow

Welcome back!  Look ahead to Genesis, Chapter 3, Verse 1…

GEN 3:1

Now the serpent was more crafty (sketchy, slick, slimy) than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And the serpent said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?’”

The serpent knew EXACTLY what God said.  But being the slime ball that he is, the serpent introduced confusion.  With God, clarity.  With Satan, confusion.

GEN 3:2

The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat…”

GEN 3:3

“…but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Flashback…Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 17…

GEN 2:17

“…but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die (dying you will die).”

How does this compare to what Eve recalls under pressure?

GEN 3:3

“…but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Genesis, Chapter 3, Verse 4…

GEN 3:4

The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die!”

The serpent is Satan, and if he said it, you know it’s a lie.  Satan continues…

GEN 3:5

“For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

We all, who are evil, desire to be like God…

GEN 3:6

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

Adam was in charge…he knew what he was doing…he was commanded not to eat it…he ate anyway…direct and willful disobedience…

GEN 3:7

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked (self-consciousness); and they sewed fig leaves together and made for themselves loin coverings.

GEN 3:8

They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Their daily ritual was to learn from the Lord as the sun was going down…their habit was to rush to the Lord…but on this day they were nowhere to be found.  An omniscient God, who knows all the knowable, knew exactly where they were…but He called them anyway…

GEN 3:9

Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”

GEN 3:10

He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”

The wrong response to a gracious God.  We do not run AWAY FROM God when we are confused.  We run TO God.  Genesis, Chapter 3, Verse 11…

GEN 3:11

And the Lord said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”

GEN 3:12

The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”

GEN 3:13

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

GEN 3:14

The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you will go, and dust you will eat all the days of your life…”

The gorgeous serpent became a snake who slithers on his belly, eating the dust of the ground.

GEN 3:15

“And I will put enmity between you (Satan) and the woman (Mary), and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head (you will be a footstool for His feet), and you shall bruise him on the heel (the crucifixion).”

GEN 3:16

To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you will bring forth children; yet your desire will be for your husband,

and he will rule over you.”

GEN 3:17

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it…’ cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.”

GEN 3:18

“Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field…”

GEN 3:19

By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground,

because from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

In Adam.

The fact that we were all born spiritually dead was because of Adam’s act, not because of our acts…because of his sin, not because of our sins… our condemnation from physical birth, therefore, is not our fault, but it is our circumstance.  This is an easy idea to comprehend.  If parents make a series of bad financial decisions and lose their home as a result…thus becoming homeless…if the parents have children, the children are homeless, too!  <The Pursuit of Happiness>…the act of the head of the household also becomes the circumstance of his children, through no fault of the children.  What parent hasn’t felt a bit guilty when face-to-face with the knowledge of this awesome responsibility?  What parent hasn't worried about ruining their kid’s lives?

When we think of Adam, we also must think back to Satan…the federal head of the angelic race…

EZE 28:11-12

Again the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “You (Satan) had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.”

EZE 28:14

“You were the anointed cherub who covers, and I placed you there.

You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked in the midst of the stones of fire.”

EZE 28:15

“You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created

until unrighteousness was found in you.”

EZE 28:16

“By the abundance of your trade you were internally filled with violence,

and you sinned; therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God.  And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.”

When Satan sinned, his act as the federal representative of all angelic creatures, spread to all of them.  Human history is an exact duplication of angelic history.  Adam’s sin spread to all mankind.  Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12 starts with the word Therefore…

ROM 5:12

Therefore, just as through one man, Adam, sin entered into the world, and spiritual death through sin, and so spiritual death spread to all men, because all men were considered by God to have sinned when Adam sinned…

Therefore, through one angel, Satan, sin entered into the universe.  Therefore, through one man, Adam, sin entered into the world.  The result in both instances was death…for mankind, the spiritual death and the physical death.

In Adam.  The work of Adam produced sin and death.  In Christ.  The work of the Lord Jesus Christ produced righteousness and justification.  Therefore, we study to understand what God has placed at our disposal…the resurrection life while here on earth.  What t means to be In Adam is to reject all of God’s perfect provisions.

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ

When God makes a promise…

it’s a guarantee!

EXO 14:13

“Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today…”

ISA 40:29

He gives strength to the weary, to him who lacks might He increases power.

1PE 5:6-7

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God the Father, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
