LESSON INTRODUCTION

So You Think You’ve Suffered?

There is a military term…the FLOT line…the Forward Line of Own Troops…as distinguished from the FLET line…the Forward Line of Enemy Troops.  Combatants in any warfare, including spiritual warfare, must have a set of their own troops at the front line of the battle.  That’s the reason we gather today to study the Word of God…whether we gather in a church, or at home, or in the car, or in whatever place the wonderful technology of the day will allow us to access biblical messages…we gather to allow God to assemble a FLOT line of wisdom on our souls so that we are able to combat the tribulation we face in the world.  In John, Chapter 16, Verses 32 and 33, the Lord Jesus Christ speaks to His apostles on the night before He is to go to the Cross…it’s called The Upper Room Discourse…and the Lord is warning the apostles about what is to happen in the days ahead…

JOH 16:32

“Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because God the Father is with Me.”

When the Shepherd goes down, the sheep are scattered…all of the apostles deserted the Lord in self preservation when He was captured prior to His crucifixion…

JOH 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

As believers in Christ, we are in union with Christ, but we are residents in the world…and Satan, the Enemy of God is the ruler of this world…John, Chapter 12, Verse 31…

JOH 12:31

Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world (Satan) will be cast out (he will be dethroned…cast into the outer darkness…the Lake of Fire).

In union with Christ we have a peace in our souls…yet while we are in this world, we suffer…because of Satan and his world system of thought trying to convert our thinking…and because of “the flesh,” our enemy within, which exerts a hostile pressure on us.  So we suffer.  You think you’ve suffered?  You have.   It’s the reason you feel insecure and inadequate and dissatisfied much of the time.  The hostile pressure of the world presses down on you.  But the pressure on you is nothing compared to the pressure exerted on our God, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is stationed at the FLOT line of the spiritual battle in the universe.  The Lord Jesus Christ “takes the point” of the battle, and He is the suffering leader…Hebrews, Chapter 12, Verses 1 to 3…

HEB 12:1

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of Old Testament witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us (buffeting us from all sides), and let us run with endurance the race (of our lives) that is set before us…

HEB 12:2

…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the Cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God the Father.

HEB 12:3

For keep on thinking about the Lord Jesus Christ who has endured such hostility by sinners (unbelievers) against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart (fainting in your souls).

As a believer in Christ, should you be sad about suffering?  Absolutely not!  Your attitude toward your own suffering calls for you to remember that suffering is temporary, but your joy, as a believer in Christ, is forever.

Welcome to a place where you can learn the Word of God and where you can put the suffering of your life in perspective.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Thank you Father for giving us relief from the burdens of life that weigh us down…all the trials and all the sufferings…thank you for renewing our strength and our courage as we put one foot in front of the other during the spiritual battle…thank you for giving us Your rest and Your peace as we bask in Your loving presence…

Sustain us, Father as we pick up our crosses and follow You…hold us in Your almighty hand and lighten our load…remind us constantly that you love us UNconditionally…that You are yoked with us in the harness…and remind us that we can’t disappoint You…remind us that we are eternally secure and we can’t lose our salvation ever because You accomplished it and You never change…teach us to reflect You to everyone we meet…help us to lighten their burdens, too…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

From Suffering to Glory

We begin our study of the third passage of Romans, Chapter 8, which extends from Verse 18 to Verse 25…Romans…the foundational message of biblical Christianity…let’s look at the passage and listen to it together, as the Word of God speaks to our souls…

ROM 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

ROM 8:19

For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.

ROM 8:20

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope…

ROM 8:21

…that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

ROM 8:22

For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

ROM 8:23

And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

ROM 8:24

For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?

ROM 8:25

But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Two subjects are in view in this passage…SUFFERING and GLORY.  One is happening to us now… SUFFERING…one will happen to us in the future…GLORY.  One is temporary…SUFFERING…one is permanent for the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ…GLORY.

In the previous two passages of study, which extend from Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 1 to Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 17…we learned a few very important things.  First, we learn that there are only two camps in the Plan of God for Mankind…those who are “in the flesh” and those who are “in the Spirit.”  Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 5 and 6…

ROM 8:5

For those who are walking ACCORDING TO THE GUIDANCE OF THE FLESH (unbelievers) set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who ARE WALKING ACCORDING TO THE GUIDANCE OF THE SPIRIT (believers in Christ), set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

ROM 8:6

For the MIND SET ON THE FLESH is death, but the MIND SET ON THE SPIRIT is life and peace…

Or as the Lord Jesus Christ says it, in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 13 and 14…

MAT 7:13

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.”

MAT 7:14

“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to (the resurrection) life, and there are few who find it.”

In God’s plan there are only two camps…the unbeliever who is on the broad road that leads to destruction…and the believer who is on the narrow road that leads to the resurrection life.

In the second passage of Romans Chapter 8, we learned some important things about ourselves as believers in Christ…we are sons of God…we are children of God…we are adopted as adults by God…we are free, no longer slaves…we are heirs…we have an inheritance…Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 14 to 17…

ROM 8:14

For all who are being led by the Holy Spirit of God, and all believers in Christ are, these are SONS OF GOD.

ROM 8:15

For you believers in Christ HAVE NOT RECEIVED A SPIRIT OF SLAVERY LEADING TO FEAR AGAIN, but you have received a spirit of ADOPTION AS ADULT SONS by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

ROM 8:16

The Holy Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are CHILDREN OF GOD…

ROM 8:17

…and if we believers in Christ are children of God, and we are, WE ARE heirs also, HEIRS OF GOD THE FATHER AND FELLOW HEIRS WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, if indeed we suffer with Him, and we do, so that we may also be glorified with Him.

SUFFERING and GLORY.  First Peter, Chapter 1, Verses 3 and 4…

1PE 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…

1PE 1:4

…to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you…

TODAY’S STUDY

From Suffering to Glory

Let’s begin our study of the verse-by-verse detail of the third passage in Romans Chapter 8…beginning at Verses 18…

ROM 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (NOW) are not worthy to be compared with the glory (IN THE FUTURE) that is to be revealed to us.

From SUFFERING to GLORY…that is the destiny of the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  You are moving from a temporary state, SUFFERING… to a permanent state…GLORY.

Kahlil Gibran is a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer who wrote a book called The Prophet…a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose.  He details SUFFERING and GLORY with other words…in his work, ON JOY AND SORROW…

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises

Was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being

The more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that holds your wine

The very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit

The very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart…

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

And you shall find…

It is only that which has given you sorrow

That is giving you joy.

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart

And you shall see that in truth

You are weeping for that which has been your delight.

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow…”

And others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater than joy.”

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

Together they come…and when one sits

Alone with you at your headboard

Remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

Verily you are suspended like scales

Between your sorrow and your joy.

Only when you are empty

Are you at standstill and balanced.

ON JOY AND SORROW by Kahlil Gibran

When the treasure-keeper lifts you

To weigh his gold and his silver

Needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

Between sorrow and joy…from SUFFERING to GLORY…this is the destiny of the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Romans Chapter 8, Verse 18…

ROM 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (NOW) are not worthy to be compared with the glory (IN THE FUTURE) that is to be revealed to us.

The group of people that exemplify suffering, perhaps more than any other, is the Jews.  The life of the Jewish race can give us context on the things we are about to study in the matter of suffering.  In the Old Testament, the Jews were taught about the spiritual life through a series of rituals.  When we examine these rituals, we will see the life of the Church Age believer more clearly.  The life of the Jewish race passes from PROMISES to SLAVERY to SALVATION to the DESERT to the PROMISED LAND.  So it is with the Church Age believer…the very same steps.

First, the PROMISES.  The Lord Jesus Christ, in His pre-incarnate state as God the Son…Jehovah Elohim…or as the Jews called Him, Yeshua…a name they considered too sacred to even pronounce…made a series of promised to Abraham, the Father of the Jewish race.  Genesis, Chapter 22, Verses 15 to 18…the Genesis that is also part of the Torah…

GEN 22:15

Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven…

GEN 22:16

…and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son…”

GEN 22:17

“…indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.”

GEN 22:18

“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

The Lord made a series of promises to the Jews, all of which will come true.  And even though the Jews have been scattered for a time, the Lord, who is faithful, will still keep his promises to them.  There will never be peace in the Middle East until the Lord Jesus Christ comes a second time on a white horse, in a robe dipped in blood, with all of His Church Age saints with Him (that’s you and me) and resides in the Middle East personally to ensure that all the promises He made are fulfilled.  And we, as Church Age believers will reign with Him.

The Jews went from PROMISES to SLAVERY.  Genesis, Chapter 15, Verse 13…

GEN 15:13

God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants (The Jews) will be strangers in a land that is not theirs (Egypt), where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.

This is very much like it is for believers in Christ today.  We suffer because we are residents in a land that is not ours, Satan’s kingdom.  Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 20…

PHI 3:20

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…

The Jews went from SLAVERY to SALVATION…Exodus, Chapter 13, Verse 3…

EXO 13:3

Moses said to the Jewish people, “Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of slavery; for by a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place.”

God accomplishes our salvation.  Exodus, Chapter 13, Verses 17 and 18…

EXO 13:17

Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.”

EXO 13:18

Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up in martial array from the land of Egypt.

Exodus, Chapter 14, Verse 13…

EXO 14:13

But Moses said to the Jewish people (as the Egyptians approached to bring them back to Egypt after a change of mind about letting them go), “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today…”

Exodus, Chapter 14, Verses 21 and 22…

EXO 14:21

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided.

EXO 14:22

The sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

These aren’t just cute stories.  These are the things the omnipotent and almighty God made happen.  The Jews went from SALVATION to the DESERT…Exodus, Chapter 15, Verse 22…

EXO 15:22

Then Moses led Israel (the Jewish people) from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur…

Exodus, Chapter 16, Verse 2…

EXO 16:2

The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

When we suffer, we grumble.  Yet from the DESERT, God moved the Jewish people to the PROMISED LAND…

DEU 27:2

So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the Lord your God gives you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime…

DEU 27:3

…and write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, promised you.

The life of the Jewish race passes from PROMISES to SLAVERY to SALVATION to the DESERT to the PROMISED LAND.  So it is with the Church Age believer.  We will learn more as we get deeper into our study of the third passage of Romans, Chapter 8.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

ACT 4:12

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given to mankind by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”

LUK 19:10

“For the Son of Man (the Lord Jesus Christ) has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
