Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Suffering Takes Many Forms

Since we weren’t here on December 6th, we didn’t get a chance to do one of the things I look forward to each year…the calling to mind a catastrophic event…a form of national suffering that has plagued mankind for centuries…WAR.  On December 7, 1941, seventy-four years ago, the United States of America…in fact the whole world…was shaken to its core.  Here is the description of an event by then President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt… an event that changed our world….

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Yesterday…December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.  Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.  Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island.  And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Japan has therefore undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense…always will our whole nation remember the character of this onslaught against us.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.  With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.

INFAMY SPEECH - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I ask that the Congress declare, that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

This suffering galvanized the spirit of the American people.  It invoked the most important word in the title of our great nation…United!

In his 1942 State of the Union Address…an address worth reading…here are a few more things President Roosevelt had to say…

1942 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

The mood of the American people is stronger than any mere desire for revenge. It expresses the will of the American people to make very certain that the world will never suffer this way again.

1942 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

We are fighting, as our fathers have fought, to uphold the doctrine that all men are equal in the sight of God. Those on the other side are striving to destroy this deep belief and to create a world in their own image—a world of tyranny and cruelty and serfdom.

1942 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

No compromise can end this conflict. There never has been—there never can be—successful compromise between good and evil. Only total victory can reward the champions of tolerance, and decency, and freedom, and faith.

So it is in the spiritual life.  There can be no mixture between good and evil…and no harmony between “the flesh” and “the Spirit.”  We are now studying suffering in Romans, Chapter 8, and as we do, we will learn how important tribulation is to our unity and to our growth.

As Pastor Robert Schuller used to say in his “Hour of Power” program…one of my mom’s favorite shows…“Tough times never last but tough people do.”

God makes us tough by allowing us to suffer.  No matter where you are in the world, as you listen to this message, know that being on the side of right is the destiny of those of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.  And wherever suffering is, there must our hearts also be.  Today we celebrate the memory of the ultimate in suffering, the Cross of our Lord, our Savior and our God, Jesus Christ,  and we welcome you to a place where the study of the Word of God puts His suffering and our suffering into perspective.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful Heavenly Father for the privilege of studying the absolute truth...the Word of God…

Thank you Father, for your mercy and for your unconditional love. In times of pain, disillusionment, and disappointment, we know You are with us, and we thank you for Your comforting presence…

We look to you for relief Father...ease our pain…help us to remember that it’s only natural that life is not a bed of roses…we cannot avoid the sicknesses and the deaths and the tribulation and the suffering that comes along with life…help us to accept the hardships as facts of life, knowing that You intend them for our good…

Bring Your Word to mind when we are suffering…and send Your Holy Spirit to our rescue…remind us that You are with us in our weakness and that when we are weak, it is then that we are strong…and help us to remember that our suffering is nothing compared to the suffering of Your Son on our behalf…

We ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit...in Christ’s name... Amen.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

The Cross is Judgment

Welcome to our monthly celebration of the Lord’s Supper.  We are looking back to the Cross and celebrating all that the Lord Jesus Christ has done for all of us there.  One thing He did for us there can be described as judgment…the New Living Translation says it this way…

COL 2:14 (New Living Translation)

“The Lord Jesus Christ canceled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ’s Cross.”

He cancelled our debt…judgment…and the Lord accomplished His work at the Cross with His mouth closed.  Isaiah, Chapter 53, Verse 7…

ISA 53:7

The Lord was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His

mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent

before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.

First Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 24…

1PE 2:24

…and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself bore our sins in His own body on the Cross, so that we might die to the sovereignty of sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Even when the Lord was being taunted, He kept His composure…Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 59 to 68…

MAT 26:59

Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

MAT 26:60

They did not find any false testimony, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two witnesses came forward…

MAT 26:61

…and said, “This man stated, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’”

MAT 26:62

The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?”

MAT 26:63

But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”

MAT 26:64

Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

MAT 26:65

Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What

further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the

blasphemy…”

MAT 26:66

“…what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!”

MAT 26:67

Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him…

MAT 26:68

…and said, “Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

In pronouncing judgment at the Cross, the Lord suffered for us.  His silence was an indication of His unconditional love for all mankind.  He was here to do a job…and He did it in unconditional love.  Unconditional love is a mentality…unconditional love is a mindset…it’s a mind set of life and not death.  This is what we celebrate today in our celebration of the Lord’s Supper.

Well here’s one of your many chances to suffer on behalf of your Pastor and your church…let’s welcome up Deacon Denny Goodall to take the offering.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Enjoying the Elements

Now let’s enjoy the elements of the Lord’s Supper Celebration.

Following God’s request, we keep on celebrating CHRIST and His Cross on a regular basis…we eat to remember who He is…His PERSON…we drink to remember His WORK, the voluntary sacrifice He made at the Cross on our behalf as our substitute…and we are grateful for what God has done for us.  First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 23 and 24 say…

1CO 11:23

For I, Paul received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus Christ on the night in which He was betrayed took bread…

1CO 11:24

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is, and keeps on being My body, which is broken for you; keep on doing this celebration for the purpose of remembering Me.”

When we eat the bread during the Lord’s Supper Celebration, we remember THE PERSON of the Lord Jesus Christ.

When we drink the cup, we remember THE WORK of the Lord Jesus Christ.  First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 25 and 26 say…

1CO 11:25

In the same way the Lord Jesus Christ took the cup after supper, representing His death on the Cross, saying, “This cup is a new testament forged with My blood; keep on doing this celebration, as often as you drink it, for the purpose of remembering Me.”

1CO 11:26

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

As you enjoy the bread and the cup, enjoy the memory of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

The Cross is Judgment

The Lord’s Supper is rich in meaning. That is why it has been a prominent part of Christianity throughout the centuries. Sometimes it is allowed to become a lifeless ritual, done more out of habit than with meaning. When a ritual loses meaning, some people overreact by stopping the ritual entirely. The better response is to restore the meaning. That’s why it is helpful for us to review what we are symbolizing.

Today we celebrate the established and irrevocable fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is a Righteous Judge.  What does he judge in us?  Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verse 12 says…

HEB 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword…piercing, even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

First Samuel, Chapter 16, Verse 7…the second part…

1SA 16:7b

“…God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

God see the heart of the naturally minded man…the unbeliever…Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 8…

ROM 8:8

…and those who are “in the flesh” (unbelievers) cannot please God.

God sees the heart of the believer in Christ, even when he is carnal of mind…First Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verse 1…

1CO 3:1

And I, brethren (believers in Christ), could not speak to you as if I were speaking to spiritual men, but I must speak to you as if I were speaking to men of flesh (the carnal believer)…as if I were speaking to infants in union with Christ.

For the believer in Christ, renewing the mind is the only way out of the spiritual paralysis of the carnal mind…and the Cross reminds us of this fact today.

The judgment we are speaking of…the judgment of our everyday life that the Cross brings to light…is the judgment of the thoughts and intent of the heart.

As it relates to God, when believers in Christ are carnal of mind, we doubt.  If we were not doubting, we would have faith.  James, Chapter 1, Verse 6b…

JAM 1:6

…the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

We get answers from God when we come boldly before Him, expressing our faith in Him.

As it relates to others, when believers in Christ are carnal of mind, we gossip, malign and judge others…we are prejudiced.  We see other people’s faults.  Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 16…

2CO 5:16

Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer.

It is best when we see others with God’s eyes and not our own.

As it relates to self, when believers in Christ are carnal of mind, we are morbidly introspective. First Timothy, Chapter 6, Verses 3 and 4…

1TI 6:3

If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness…

1TI 6:4

…he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions…

When we are false with ourselves…following false teachers…accepting false doctrines…pursuing a life that is not pure, we constantly think of ourselves as not good enough.

Christ came to judge all of these maladies…doubt…vituperation…and falseness…at the Cross…and there He succeeded in putting them all to death….judging them as dead…as crucified.

We must do the same.  We must crucify the carnal mind and its false thoughts at the Cross…and we must love the provisions of God instead.

Most of our suffering in this life comes from our failure to use the pronouncements of the Cross to judge our own thinking.

Instead of doubting God, faith.

Instead of gossiping about men, graciousness toward them.

Instead of morbid introspection, contentment regardless of circumstances.

The Lord Jesus Christ had faith in His father’s plan…He embraced people…He was content.  WE have merely to follow His example.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ROM 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel message, for the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

PSA 62:1

My soul waits in silence for the Lord only; from Him is my salvation.

ACT 2:21

‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved.’

2PE 3:9

The Lord Jesus Christ is not slow about His promise of salvation, as some accuse Him of, but is patient toward you (all mankind), not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance (a change of mind about a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).
