TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

God’s Sovereignty Honors Our Will

Our Sovereign God always gets His way.  Yet in sovereignty, meaning nothing happens without His permission, God honors our will.  He has a response to our faith and a response to our unbelief…Jeremiah, Chapter 18, Verses 1 to 10…

JEREMIAH 18:1

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord saying…

JEREMIAH 18:2

“Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.”

JEREMIAH 18:3

Then I (Jeremiah) went down to the potter’s house, and there the potter was, making something on the potter’s wheel.

JEREMIAH 18:4

But the vessel that the potter was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter…so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.

JEREMIAH 18:5

Then the word of the Lord came to me (Jeremiah) saying…

JEREMIAH 18:6

“Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.”

JEREMIAH 18:7

“At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it…”

JEREMIAH 18:8

“…if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil (to repent), I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it.”

JEREMIAH 18:9

“Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build it up or to plant it…”

JEREMIAH 18:10

“…if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.”

God responds to our faith and to our unbelief.  Welcome to a place where you can orient your will to God’s will if that’s what you want to do.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

God’s Sovereignty Honors Our Will

The second passage in Romans 9 is a passage about God’s sovereignty… specifically about His sovereign election of a nation (Israel) and a people (the Jewish race).  God has will, and He can do whatever He wills.  This second passage in Romans, Chapter 9 answers the question, “Who is true Israel?”  Romans, Chapter 9, Verses 6 to 13…

CHAPTER 9 - PASSAGE 2

ROMANS 9:6

But it is not as though the word of God has failed (that is…has had no effect…simply because unbelieving Jews rejected their Messiah). For they are not all Israel (spiritual Jews in the eyes of God) who are descended from Israel (as racial Jews)…

God’s words have not been rendered ineffective by the choices of a nation or a people…one of the great things about God is that in Sovereignty, God is able to achieve His will in the face of creature obedience OR disobedience.  Therefore, the unbelief of some in the Jewish race that has caused them to reject their Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, does not alter God’s sovereign plan.

ROMANS 9:7

…nor are they all children of God (in God’s eyes) simply because they are Abraham’s descendants…but “through Isaac (a believer in Christ) your descendants will be named.”

There is, and always has been, a believing remnant in Israel…a small group of believers who have not rejected a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ as their Messiah…today these Jews are called Messianic Jews…they are spiritual Israel.  They are rejected and despised by most of the Jewish race, and certainly by most of the Jewish Rabbinical community, yet true Israel are all those who believe in Christ and who have received His salvation as a result.

ROMANS 9:8

That is, it is not the children (the born ones) of the flesh (Ishmael’s seed) who are children of God, but it is the children (the born ones) of the promise (Abraham’s seed…the born ones of God that) are regarded (by God) as descendants (of Abraham).

Why?  God is Sovereign.  His choice in the election of a nation is Israel.  His choice in the election of a people is the Jews.  God can do whatever He wills, and He did.  For example, it was not God’s will that Abraham and Sarah take matters into their own hands with Hagar, producing Ishmael.  It was God’s sovereign plan in eternity past that Abraham’s line would come through Isaac…and God’s decision on that matter was made before the foundation of the world.  As the Sovereign God of the universe, God can do whatever He wills…and He did.  His will be done, not Abraham’s.

ROMANS 9:9

For this is the word of promise made by God to Abram and Sari, “At this time next year I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”

There was another example…

ROMANS 9:10

And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac…

ROMANS 9:11

…for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s sovereign purpose according to His sovereign choice (election) would stand, not because of works…but because of God the Father who calls…

God calls each of us to do His will.  Why did God call me to be a Pastor-Teacher and to be here in a Podunk town (Mesa) and at  a Podunk church, as Deacon Denny calls it, teaching you today?  He did it because He can!  Who am I to argue with Him?  My job is to do His will, His way.  My job and your job is to answer His call…are you listening?

ROMANS 9:12

…it was said to Rebekah, “The older will serve the younger.”

To demonstrate His sovereignty, to show His ability to do as He wishes, the older serving the younger was God’s choice even though it was in direct opposition to Jewish law and Jewish custom.  God always does the thing that is least expected.  It’s one of the ways we know things are from God.  It was the same with David…God called Jesse’s youngest son to take on the task of bringing down Goliath, instead of choosing Jesse’s eldest son.  God’s choices are always contrary to human customs and human laws.  God always does just as He wills.

ROMANS 9:13

Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

God doesn’t hate anyone.  In fact, He loves everyone unconditionally.  Yet this verse points out that the Lord’s love for Jacob, His sovereign choice in the line of Abraham is so strong, that His attitude about Esau in comparison looks like hate.  This is commonly known as an ANTHROPOPATHISM…

ANTHROPOPATHISM

Attributing emotional characteristics to God for the purpose of human understanding.

Once again, God is not talking about individuals here…rather He is talking about a nation and a people.  Remember Genesis, Chapter 25, Verses 21 to 23…

GENESIS 25:21

Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren (like Sarah)…and the Lord answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.

GENESIS 25:22

But the children struggled together within her…and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.

GENESIS 25:23

The Lord said to Rebekah, “Two nations are in your womb…and two

peoples will be separated from your body…and one people shall be stronger than the other…and the older (Esau) shall serve the younger (Jacob).”

The nations were Edom, an idolatrous nation from the seed of Esau…and Israel, a chosen nation, from the seed of Jacob.  The people were the Arabs and the Jews.  The story of Israel is the story of God’s sovereign election of a nation.  The story of the Jews is the story of God’s sovereign election of a people.  It was always God’s will, before the foundation of the world to create and to prosper a nation and a people according to His own sovereign choice and His own sovereign will, and the machinations of mankind would not disturb His plan…Genesis, Chapter 17, Verses 19 to 21…

GENESIS 17:19

But God said, “No (Abraham), but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his (spiritual) descendants after him.”

GENESIS 17:20

“As for Ishmael, I have heard you…behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.”

GENESIS 17:21

“But MY covenant I will establish (in sovereignty) with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”

The Lord comforted Abraham, who thought He had ruined everything… Genesis, Chapter 17, Verses 19 to 21…

GENESIS 21:12

But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid…whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named.”

Let’s take a music break, and then we’ll see what there is to learn about God’s sovereignty honoring our will.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

God’s Sovereignty Honors Our Will

Welcome back!

What does God’s sovereignty teach us?  God’s has a sequence in dealing with His creatures.  It all started with…

HIS SOVEREIGN AND DIVINE DECREE

I will create perfect creatures with a free will

I will allow every creature to fall

I will provide for their salvation…dying on the Cross for them all

I will allow those rejecting the offer to wallow in their condemnation

I will give to those who believe…election…predestination…

ROMANS 8:28

And we know that God the Father causes all things to work together for good to those who love the Father, to those who are called according to His purpose.

It is not our works that saved us, but it His divine calling of us that saved us.  Knowing that there would be some who are positive to a relationship with Him, He provided for them a divine course that had nothing to do with their will…but only to do with His sovereign decision…done before the foundation of the world before any of them had done anything good or bad.

ROMANS 8:29

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brethren…

ROMANS 8:30

…and these whom He predestined, He also called…and these whom He called, He also justified…and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

The divine sequence of sovereignty…

THE BLESSING OF CREATION

The Lord made us

He blessed us with the perfect human parents

John, Chapter 1, Verse 3…

JOHN 1:3

All things came into being through the Lord (God the Son), and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

THE IMPUTATION OF ADAM’S SIN

Adam’s Sin

My sins

Separation from a relationship with God

It’s not our fault but it is our circumstance.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a

For in union with Adam all creatures are set to die the second death…

Romans, Chapter 3, Verses 10 and 11…

ROMANS 3:10

…as it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous, not even one…”

ROMANS 3:11

“There is no creature who understands God…there is no creature who seeks for a relationship with God…”

I WORK TO REDEEM MYSELF

I try to stop sinning

I try to keep the law

I fail

In fact, the law brings out the sin in us…Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 20…

ROMANS 5:20

The Law came in so that the transgression would increase…

Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 7…

ROMANS 7:7

I would not have come to know sin except through the Mosaic Law…for I would not have known about coveting if the Mosaic Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

HUMAN CHOICE:  UNBELIEF OR FAITH

I get stiff necked = I keep trying to do things myself

I turn to grace = I can’t do it…so You do it for me

Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 24…

ROMANS 7:24

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?

FOR BELIEVERS, FAITH TO FAITH

I have faith in the Lord for salvation

I have faith in the Lord for everything else

Romans, Chapter 1, Verse 17…

ROMANS 1:17

For in the gospel message the righteousness from God is revealed from faith to faith…

GOD RESPONDS TO OUR FAITH OR UNBELIEF

God has always wanted to do everything for us

God has mercy on faith

God allows a hardening for unbelief

John, Chapter 14, Verse 14…

JOHN 14:14

If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

God’s sovereignty honors our will…but make no mistake about it.  His will be done.  It is best for us to get on board God’s train.

GOD WANTS YOU!

Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

ROMANS 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God the Father…divine omnipotence…to provide salvation to everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ…to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentiles).

MATTHEW 7:13

“Enter salvation through the narrow gate (the Lord Jesus Christ)…for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction…and there are many who enter through it.”

MATTHEW 7:14

“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to the resurrection life, and there are few who find it.”

JOHN 10:9

“I (the Lord Jesus Christ) am the door to salvation…if anyone enters through believing in Me…he will be saved…and then he will go in and out and find pasture.”

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22

For all in union with Adam are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…but all those in union with Christ will live the resurrection life.
