Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege and opportunity of studying Your Word today.
Thank you for justification by faith, the work you do in our spiritual lives, and the gift of salvation and freedom that we have been given in you.
Lord, thank for you for your Word that gives us an understanding of who You are, and the plans you have for us. Thank you for Your wisdom that is higher than man’s wisdom, that gives us the opportunity to live an amazing life that only you can provide. Thank you that we receive all that you have for us through your word today.
We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit.. in Christ’s name…Amen.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON
The Power of Remembering
This morning we will talk about the mental process of remembering. It’s a constantly evolving process that changes based on how you use it. It’s accuracy is largely based on the time spent with the facts, emotions, or the experience that one wants to recall. Because it can be developed and used with proficiency, I’m going to refer to it as a skill.
Remembering is an important skill that shapes much of how we experience life. It shapes our identity. It helps us understand our connection to other people. It empowers our knowledge and fuels our wisdom. Remembering provides a framework for our judgement, and is a bloodline to one’s empathy. Without it, we lose our ability to function effectively.
HOSEA 4:6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Since you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the Law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Here God was speaking to Israel about the consequences they will face for rejecting the law. Now we have been saved by Grace, but the principles are the same. If we don’t have knowledge around a certain thing, it will be to our detriment, and can even lead to our destruction.
Remembering is foundational in our lives. The ability to remember is a gift given to us by God, but because we don’t understand its full capabilities, often its power is unrealized. It is so important that God made sure we had help to do it.
JOHN 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.
God gave us the Holy Spirit to teach us and ensure that we remembered. Peter had some insight as to why, as he encouraged the church to remember as well:
2 Peter 3:1
Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of a reminder,
2 Peter 3:2
to remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
Peter understands the power of remembering and writes this second letter to the church so that they can be “stirred up”. By stirring them up, he motivated them, encouraged them, and empowered them to stand strong amidst the challenges they were facing.
As we go through the lesson, allow the Holy Spirit to stir you up as we learn and remember what God has done for us and what his plan is for us is.
To ensure we are on the same page, let’s look at the definition according to Merriam-Webster:
REMEMBER
When it relates to the principles and the promises of God, I believe that we can all agree that every one of these definitions of remember will easily stir you up and get you excited!
The bible has some important things to say about remembering, and today by the power of the Holy Spirit, I hope to remind you (stir you up by remembering) the power of this gift, as well as the importance of intentionally using your memory to recall what God has said to us.
Our enemy Satan, understands the power of remembering. He wants us to be ignorant of God’s promises, and he has some things he wants us to remember that will keep us from experiencing all that God has for us. His MO (modus operandi) is to kill, steal and destroy. Consequently, there are things we should no longer remember (forget), as well as things we should never forget. First, let’s look at what we should forget.
Things We Should Forget (Not Remember)
Forget About Your Sin
Satan wants you to be ignorant of God’s promises, so he blinds the minds of unbelievers.
2 CORINTHIANS 4:4
…in whose case the god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they will not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Unbelievers can’t see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ. Even as a believer, you don’t believe a promise of God (because of ignorance or willing disbelief), the outcome is the same. You can’t see the light of God’s promise! Satan wants to continue to influence your mind so you can’t see the light God has for you in your given situation.
Satan also tricks us to into remembering our sins to make us feel like frauds, or so wethat we are not worthy.As a believer, you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior, and as a benefit, your sins have been forgiven. You have been saved by God’s grace, and a new creation in Him. You should NOT remember your sins.
ROMANS 8:1
Therefore, there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus.
ROMANS 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Paul reminds us that we have been set free and there is no reason to feel guilty or unworthy. Colossians give more perspective on what Christ has done for us.
COLOSSIANS 1:13
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of
COLOSSIANS 1:14
His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
We were rescued from the dominion or the authority of Satan’s kingdom. Satan wants you to stay ignorant of this fact so that you will submit to his way of doing things. He wants you to continue feeling the guilt and shame because of your past.
It reminds me of elephants that were trained in the circus. As young elephants they are chained to a stake in the ground that they can’t escape from. After several failed attempts, they give up. As full-grown elephants, they are still chained to the stakes. They could easily pull the stake out of the ground and run away, but they have been conditioned to believe that can’t escape, so they don’t even attempt.
Has conditioning from the way you previously lived your life, trained you so now it’s difficult to believing the promises of God?
Why would Satan want you to feel guilty?
HEBREWS 4:16
Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.
If you are feeling guilty or unworthy, you won’t have confidence. Paul concludes here that we should approach the throne of grace confidence to receive mercy and grace for help in need. The enemy wants to destroy your confidence to prevent you from receiving what God has promised you.
Many believers focus on (remember) their sin and can’t get past it. Hebrews says this about sin:
HEBREWS 12:1
Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Paul admonishes us to get rid of, or lay aside (KJV) every weight and sin that easily sets us back, so that we can run the race God has set before us.
PSALM 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our wrongdoings (sins) from us.
God has removed our sins from us as far as the east is from the west. I’m not sure anyone can measure how far that is, but its clear God wants it out of our lives.
Forgot About Your Self Righteousness
Too often people make the mistake of thinking that our works (which can inflate our feeling of self-righteous) is what is required to get in good with God or to “earn” our salvation. But this is a fallacy.
We’ve heard the story of Job, the great loss he endured, and how God blessed him in the end. But there was a period where Job had a moment of self-righteousness. Job talks about his integrity, then he was rebuked by Elihu as he spoke what God put on his heart. A few chapters later, God speaks to Joe directly and gives him the rebuke of rebukes!
Who is this who darkens the divine plan By words without knowledge?
Now tighten the belt on your waist like a man, And I shall ask you, and you inform Me!
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding,
Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the measuring line over it?
On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
God went in on Joe! Because of his self-righteousness, he felt like he shouldn’t be gone through what he was going through. How many times do we feel this way when we have certain challenges in life? I attempt to be mindful so that I don’t think more of myself than I should, but I admit that sometimes I ask, “why do I have to go through this trial?”
If you have not read all of joe 38 in a while, I encourage you to do so. The questions God asks job, and the obviousness of the fact that we don’t really have a clue, is so apparent that a sincere consideration of what God is saying will absolutely humble you.
Maybe you still feel some kind of way because you know that you are such a good person, and you do the right things most of the time. You might not be perfect, but you are pretty close. This is what God says to you.
ISAIAH 64:6
For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
The word filthy is a translation of the Hebrew word iddah, which literally means “the bodily fluids from a woman’s menstrual cycle.” The word garment is a translation of begged, meaning “a rag or garment.” Without Christ’s sacrifice, even our good deeds are as filthy rags. The amazing news is that Jesus’ made us righteous with His sacrifice on the cross!
PROVERBS 16:2
All the ways of a person are clean in his own sight, But the Lord examines the motives.
People can do things that seem good, but only God knows the heart. When you do “good” things with bad motives, God knows. And Philippians, we are admonished to humble ourselves instead considering our own righteousness.
PHILIPPIANS 2:3
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves;
Before Jesus died on the cross, there was a serious emphasis on outward displays of right doing. It was how the community judged each other. In Luke, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate how he feels about self-righteousness.
LUKE 18:9
Now He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:
LUKE 18:10
Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
LUKE 18:11
The Pharisee stood and began praying this in regard to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
LUKE 18:12
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.
LUKE 18:13
But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!
LUKE 18:14
I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
The pathway to success in the kingdom of God is to humble yourself. Let’s forget our self-righteousness and consider others more important than ourselves.
Forget About Your Worry (Take No Thought)
The god of this world has ensured that worry is prevalent amongst the people… even God’s people. How many of you have worried about something you heard on the news? Or how many of you feel that if you aren’t worrying you don’t care (don’t’ raise your hand)?? For those of you that did your worry, did it change your situation?
Jesus specifically tells us NOT to worry!
MATTHEW 6:25
For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life (take no thought in KJV), as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing?
MATTHEW 6:26
Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they?
MATTHEW 6:27
And which of you by worrying can add a single day to his life’s span?
MATTHEW 6:28
And why are you worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth,
MATTHEW 6:29
yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.
MATTHEW 6:30
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!
MATTHEW 6:31
Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?
MATTHEW 6:32
For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
MATTHEW 6:33
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.
MATTHEW 6:34
So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Worrying, remembering all the potential negative things that can happen in a situation, is faithless, and makes it difficult to do what you should be doing! (Like praying). Actually, there is scripture that specifically says this. Let’s look at Philippians chapter 4.
PHILIPPIANS 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Don’t be anxious or another way of saying that is don’t worry about anything. Have you had a day go by that you didn’t worry about anything? Maybe an hour? We need to let that one sink deep in our spirit. Paul goes on to tell us that, we should approach everything with prayer and thanksgiving as we ask God for what we want. In addition, an amazing bonus that comes with praying and thanksgiving, is peace that exceeds our understanding.
Forgetting about worry, letting go of worrying, opens the door for you to grab a hold to peace. Earlier we saw that God gave us a helper to make sure that we remembered everything that he said. The next thing Jesus said after that is here in the 14th chapter of John.
JOHN 14:27
Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.
With everything going on in the world today, it is easy to be filled with worry and anxiety, which is the enemies plan for you. Let’s forget about worrying and receive the peace that Jesus died for us to have.

THINGS WE SHOULD REMEMBER
Remember,WeHave an Enemy, Satan
As we walk through our daily lives, it’s easy to be lulled to sleep and forget that we have an enemy. Remember, his goal is to kill, steal, and destroy. Soon after Jesus was revealed, Satan attempted to execute his plan.
MARK 1:12
And immediately the Spirit *brought Him out into the wilderness.
MARK 1:13
And He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving Him.
Satan temped God in an attempt to destroy the father’s will for him, so expect that he will do the same with you.
LUKE 22:31
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you men like wheat;
Jesus was explaining Satan’s desire toward us. The sifting process is 2 stages. The first part is the threshing, where wheat is beaten down and ground up between heavy grinding stones or sharp steel teeth. Next, the grain is shaken through a sieve or large strainer to separate the chaff from the grain.
You enemy wants to beat you down, and grind you up. He will attempt to pressure you to get you to forget who you are. But, don’t fall for it. Remember his intention toward you, and remember that we have the victory through Christ.
1 PETER 5:8
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 PETER 5:9
So resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world.
It is important to remember what God has said to us, so that we can stand firm on our faith. Without being able to remember, you have nothing to stand on. Don’t get caught up with everything going on in the world and lose your awareness of the tricks of the enemy.
When Satan is not attacking you in person, he attempts to separate us from God. Let’s look at the vision given to Zechariah.
ZECHARIAH 3:1
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right to accuse him.
ZECHARIAH 3:2
And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a log snatched from the fire?
The will rebuked Satan then, and He rebukes him now! It’s critical for us to know this so that we don’t stumble because of his accusations directed at us.
Remember The Wisdom of God
The wisdom of God, as far beyond what we can comprehend. Period because of the grace of God, he has given us his word so that we can grasp some of the concepts. God’s wisdom is vastly different from the world’s wisdom. The Bible says the God’s wisdom is foolishness to the world. Let’s look at a few scriptures that we should remember as a release to God’s wisdom.
LUKE 11:49
For this reason also, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,
Here, Luke references, Matthew’s account of Jesus, where he spoke these words in Matthew 23:34. What I want you to see here, is that he called the word of God, the wisdom of God.
John establishes that there is no separation between God and his word, and the fact that Jesus was the word made flesh.
JOHN 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
JOHN 1:2
He was in the beginning with God.
JOHN 1:3
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.
JOHN 1:4
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind.
JOHN 1:5
And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.
JOHN 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
God is wisdom, there is no separating His wisdom from him. If we want to understand wisdom, we should seek to understand God. We also see that with him giving us Jesus, he gave us His wisdom to observe in person.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:18
Take care that no one deceives himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:19
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God. For it is written: He is the one who catches the wise by their craftiness;
God’s wisdom is higher than man’s wisdom, and it is foolishness to the world. Remember to check the wisdom of the world with the wisdom of God, be aware when hear the counsel of non-believers that is rooted in worldly wisdom.
JAMES 3:13
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.
JAMES 3:14
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.
JAMES 3:15
This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.
JAMES 3:17
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy.
Natural wisdom is demonic and earthly. But God’s wisdom that comes from above is full of everything that leads to good life.
God has made his wisdom available to us and calls out for us. Proverbs chapter 8 speaks to God’s wisdom at length and it is great to read on a regular basis. Let’s read some of the scriptures that speak to the power of God’s wisdom.
PROVERBS 8:1
Does not wisdom call, And understanding raise her voice?
PROVERBS 8:2
On top of the heights beside the way, Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
PROVERBS 8:3
Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:
PROVERBS 8:4
To you, people, I call, And my voice is to mankind.
PROVERBS 8:5
You naive ones, understand prudence; And, you fools, understand wisdom!
God’s wisdom is available to us, and it cries out to us everywhere. We have a choice to answer the call, or to continue in our old ways. It does take some energy and effort to learn this wisdom, so you can operate in it.
Have you ever been faced with an opportunity to experience something new, or learn something new, but you decided against it because you thought it might be too difficult? Do you feel like you don’t have enough time? Do you feel like you’re too old? Did you listen to somebody else’s commentary, then change your mind? The enemy will blind your mind to discourage you from gaining the wisdom of God. He will influence you to feel like it’s too difficult, too hard, or take too long. If you plan on living, the time is going to pass anyway. Why not use it to gain God’s understanding and wisdom?
Let’s continue with Proverbs chapter 8.
PROVERBS 8:7
For my mouth will proclaim truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
PROVERBS 8:8
All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them.
PROVERBS 8:9
They are all straightforward to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.
God wisdom will lead you to righteousness and eliminate any worry or anxiety related to what you’re trying to do.
PROVERBS 8:11
For wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her.
PROVERBS 8:14
Advice is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine.
Much of our time is spent trying to earn money or pursuing things we desire. We spend so much time and energy on it that we neglect our families and other priorities that we have in our life. Is it possible that our current situation is because we like God’s wisdom on how we should be living our life to achieve all the things that we desire? The longer I live the more I realize that there is a better way than the hustle and grind that I was taught at an early age.
PROVERBS 8:17
I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.
PROVERBS 8:18
Riches and honor are with me, Enduring wealth and righteousness.
PROVERBS 8:19
My fruit is better than gold, even pure gold; And my yield better than choice silver.
PROVERBS 8:22
The Lord created me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old.
PROVERBS 8:23
From eternity I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.
Proverbs makes it clear that wisdom was with God from the beginning, and that is value is more than gold or silver or any other valuable thing. God’s wisdom is actually the best way to achieve any of those things. This encouraging to know that this wisdom is available for us if we want it, and we have the promise that if we seek it, we will find it.
Remember the Warfare
2 CORINTHIANS 10:3
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh,
2 CORINTHIANS 10:4
for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses (strongholds).
2 Corinthians 10:5
We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,
Don’t forget that we are in a spiritual warfare. The battleground is in the mind, as we are to cast down imaginations (thoughts) that exalt itself above the knowledge of God. The book of Ephesians reminds us of this as well.
EPHESIANS 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
EPHESIANS 6:11
Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
EPHESIANS 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
EPHESIANS 6:13
Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
EPHESIANS 6:14
Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
EPHESIANS 6:15
and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace;
EPHESIANS 6:16
in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
EPHESIANS 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Paul encourages us to be fully prepared for the battle that is before us. Because it is spiritual, we might not always be aware of it, but it’s going down.
ISAIAH 54:17
No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; And you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.
When all is well and things pop up to discourage you, or those closest to you act out of character and frustrates you. Don’t get angry with the people, or the things that come up. Those things come to distract you and get you off track. Please remember that we are in a spiritual battle.
Remember to Have Joy
NEHEMIAH 8:10
Then he said to them, Go, eat the festival foods, drink the sweet drinks, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your refuge (strength).
James speaks about joy in this way.
JAMES 1:2
Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials,
JAMES 1:3
knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
JAMES 1:4
And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Count it all joy, because it is where we get strength. Remembering that being tested produces endurance and leads to us being complete can make it exciting to go through…. If you choose to remember. If not, you will be discouraged and frustrated, not accessing the power that remembering the word of God provides. The joy of the Lord is our strength!
HEBREWS 12:2
looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Remembering allows us to focus on the what the Lord has done has for. Remembering gives us Joy. We can be excited when we remember who’s we are and who He created us to be!
Remember Eternal Life
JOHN 4:14
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.
JOHN 10:28
and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
Through Christ’s work on the cross, we have eternal life. Don’t forget that work made you righteous, and it work gave you the victory in this life, and in the life to come!

Let us pray...
Heavenly Father, thank you for your loving kindness toward us. It is your love that constrains us, and propels us. Thank you for understanding, and a willingness to do all that you have instructed us to do, regardless of how we feel about it.
Thank you for giving us the gift of remembering, and the understanding how it can be a powerful force in our lives. Let our skillful use of remembering, shine a light to those around us so that they too, will want to walk in the Your light and experience all the benefits that you have given us as believers.
.. we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit.. in Christ’s name…Amen.
