Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries, an intimate, local Christian Church with a worldwide impact.  My name is Pastor Rory Clark.  Thanks for listening to this Bible lesson!

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What Do You Bring to Church?

LESSON INTRODUCTION

It's one thing to "GO" to church.  For all who are listening to this message, in a sense, you are "GOING" to church, and going to church is pleasing to the Lord.  Hebrews, Chapter 10, Verses 24 and 25 say…

HEBREWS 10:24

…let us believers in Christ consider how to stimulate one another to unconditional love and good deeds…

HEBREWS 10:25

…not forsaking our own assembling together as is the habit of some…instead,  let us encourage one another which is  all the more important as you see the day of the Lord drawing near.

The real question for reflection is the title of today's lesson.  What do you BRING to church?  The following passage in Romans, Chapter 12, our passage of study for today, asks you to consider the seriousness of this question.

OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION

Let’s hear some music!

For many of you in Barah Ministries, the music part of our worship service is the time to tune out.  Yet music is a critical part of the worship service.  Music stimulates us in ways that little else can.  The songs are a chance for reflection on the message of each song.  They help you reflect on the message of each lesson.

God gives each of us "talent" according to a passage in Matthew, Chapter 25.  He expects us to use it, both for ourselves and for others.  One day, when believers meet the Lord Jesus Christ face-to-face, He will say something to us.  We hope He says what's in Matthew, Chapter 25, Verse 21…

MATTHEW 25:21

“The master said to one of His slaves, 'Well done, good and faithful slave.  You were faithful with a few things.  I will put you in charge of many things.  Enter into the joy of your master.’”

Much of God's assessment of us will come from how well we fellowship with each other.  Here's June Murphy to encourage us to a lifestyle of fellowship in her song LIGHT OF FELLOWSHIP.  Reflect on its words.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Father, thank you for bringing together a group of believers in Christ to hear the Word of God so we can have companionship with like-minded people in a world where Your believers have little in common with those around them…

…help those of us believers in Christ to truly understand what fellowship is from Your perspective as a result of the things You teach us in today’s lesson…

…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What Do You Bring to Church?

LESSON PART ONE

We continue our study of the apostle Paul’s letter to the believers in Christ in first-century Rome in the second passage of Chapter 12.

Romans is known as the king of the New Testament epistles because believers in Christ who haven’t studied this letter know little about Christianity and little about God.  Romans teaches us everything we need to know about Christianity itself.

In Romans, Chapters 1 to 8, the Lord gives us the gospel message, the good news of how to enter The Christian Way of Life.  In Romans, Chapters 12 to 16, the Lord outlines The Christian Way of Living.  We move from unbeliever to believer.  That's SALVATION.  We move from immature believers to mature believers.  That's SANCTIFICATION.

In both salvation and sanctification, God is responsible for the outcome.  That’s not to say the Lord doesn’t have standardsfor His believers.  The Bible, which is the exact thinking of the Lord Jesus Christ, recommends ways for Christians to live.  The only way to know how God wants us to live is to study His Word.  The only way to know God is to study His word.  Those are two of the reasons we GO to church.

Today's passage asks, "What do you BRING to church?"  Let's look at the passage in Romans, Chapter 12, Verses 3 to 8…

ROMANS 12:3

For through the grace given to me by God, I (Paul) say to everyone among you not

to think more highly of himself than he ought to think…but to think so as to have

sound judgment, as God has allotted to each of us a measure of faith.

ROMANS 12:4

For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function…

ROMANS 12:5

…so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.

ROMANS 12:6

Since we have spiritual gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith…

ROMANS 12:7

…if service, in his serving…or he who teaches, in his teaching…

ROMANS 12:8

…or he who exhorts, in his exhortation…he who gives, with liberality…he who leads, with diligence…he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

What do you BRING to church?  Prophecy?  Service?  Teaching?  Exhortation?   Giving?  Leadership?  Mercy?  These are just a few of the spiritual gifts.

In Second Timothy, Chapter 4, Verses 1 to 4 the apostle Paul sends a message to Pastors…those of us who teach the Word of God for your benefit…

SECOND TIMOTHY 4:1

I (Paul) solemnly charge you (Timothy) in the presence of God the Father and in the presence of Christ Jesus, the One who is to judge the living and the dead, and I charge you by His appearing and His kingdom…

SECOND TIMOTHY 4:2

…to preach the Word of God…be ready to preach in season and out of season…be ready to reprove, to rebuke, and to exhort with great patience and instruction.

SECOND TIMOTHY 4:3

For the time will come when believers in Christ will not endure sound Biblical

teaching, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires (the desire to hear only what they want to hear)…

SECOND TIMOTHY 4:4

…and these believers in Christ will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

As a Pastor under this instruction from the apostle Paul, it’s a routine to reflect on the job I’m doing as Pastor.  One of the challenges of being a Pastor iswe learn as we go.  The Pastor I am today is not the Pastor I was yesterday.  I have moved from being an immature Pastor, making every mistake imaginable, to being a maturing Pastor with more discernment about the office to which God has appointed me.

One of my failings over the years is the reluctance to rebuke my congregation.  What is rebuke?

REBUKE

The expression of strong disapproval…the giving of feedback that is critical.

I am more likely to mumble rebuke to myselfor to tell it to the Lord in prayer.   Today, an exception is due.  This passage highlights the critical need for rebuke of a congregation.

What do you BRING to church?

You may have a few ideas about this.  What is most important is not what you think you need to bring to church.  What’s most important is what God wants you to bring to church.  In the first passage of Romans, Chapter 12…Verses 1 and 2, God gives us two things He wants us to bring to church.  The first is YOURSELF.  Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 1…

ROMANS 12:1

Therefore...I (Paul)...urge you believers in Christ...as you keep on being persuaded because of the many mercies of God...TO PRESENT YOUR BODIES (willingly… by choice and not by command...as) A LIVING AND HOLY SACRIFICE... acceptable to God the Father...which is your spiritual service...worship.

God wants you to bring your body to church…the container for your heart, mind, soul, and spirit.

The second thing God wants you to bring to church is your mentality…your thinking.  Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 2…

ROMANS 12:2a

And do not be conformed to this world (by Satan, by his cosmic system of thought, and by the flesh resident in you)...instead, keep on being transformed by God the Holy Spirit...through the renewing of your mind (as you study the Word of God)...

ROMANS 12:2b

...so that you may see clearly...through the testing of experience...what the will of God is...and the will of God is that which is good for you…and that which is acceptable to Him…and that which is perfect in result.

God wants to shape your mentality through the lessons in the Word of God so you know how to look at the world you live in…so you know how to run your life…so you know God…and so you know The Christian Way of Living.

If you asked me, without knowing much about you, I'd say you don't spend much of your one hundred and twelve waking hours each week incorporating God into your thoughts and letting Him run your lives.

We just came out of a season that proves the point…the Christmas season…a time when many of us run around like chickens with our heads cut off, engaged in the meaninglessness of purchasing and giving insignificant gifts to people out of guilt more than out of desire.

If God were inspecting your lives and giving you feedback moment-by-moment, you probably wouldn't like what He had to say.  He’d probably echo the sentiments of the great life experimenter, Solomon, who lamented his meaningless journey into the various areas of life on earth.  His conclusion?

Ecclesiastes, Verses 1 and 2…Verses 8 and 9…

ECCLESIASTES 1:1

The words of the Preacher (Solomon)…the son of David…the king in Jerusalem.

ECCLESIASTES 1:2

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher…all is vanity.”

ECCLESIASTES 1:8

All things are wearisome…and man is not able to tell it.  The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled with hearing.

ECCLESIASTES 1:9

That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done.  So there is nothing new under the sun.

In other words, we spend most of our lives chasing the meaningless, influencedby the ruler of this world, Satan, the enemy of God.  He offers a kingdom designed to ruin our joy and to steal our victory in union with Christ, and we willingly fall for his deceptions.  He encourages us to want things, and when we get them, we exclaim, "Is that it?"

Vanity.  Another way to say what Solomon is saying is, "Futility…futility… nothing is fulfilling under the sun."  Nothing except studying the Word of God and all it teaches us.

What do you BRING to church?  You bring spiritual gifts.  At the moment of your salvation, God gives you a spiritual gift.  What is your spiritual gift?  I love asking the question because it paralyzes those not interested in knowing, and that is MOST Christians.  Don’t believe it?  Ask your Christian friends, “What is your spiritual gift?"  Watch them get a cotton mouth.

The question we ought to be asking, in addition to the question of today's lesson is, "Why did God give me a spiritual gift?"  That answer may surprise you.  When we return from the break, we'll study the second passage of Romans, Chapter 12, and we'll see why a rebuke is necessary for the Barah Ministries congregation.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

What Do You Bring to Church?

LESSON PART TWO

Everything is laid bare before the eyes of the One to whom we must give an

accounting.

What would you be doing…how would you live…if you knew that everything you do daily matters to God?

God has gifted you with a salvation you can’t earn.  God has gifted you with a spiritual gift.  He expects you to know what it is and to use it for a purpose.  Do you?  Or is your job more important?  Are your kids more important?  Is fantasy football more important?  Is your spouse more important?  There are many distractions in Satan's kingdom that we make much more important than God.

Let’s study the passage.  Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 3…

ROMANS 12:3

For through the grace given to me by God the Father (the grace gift of being an apostle), I (Paul) say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think...but to think so as to have sound judgment, the thinking that’s in line with the measure of faith distributed to you by God (as your spiritual gift).

What do you BRING to church?  God wants you to bring YOURSELF to church.

He wants you to bring YOUR MENTALITY to church…your mentality as the new creation of God…Second Corinthians, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

SECOND CORINTHIANS 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in union with Christ, and all believers in Christ are, there is a new creation…the old things passed away…behold, new things have come.

God wants you to bring humility to church.  He doesn't want you to think more highly of yourselves than you ought.  Satan wants us to do what he did.  He overestimated his ability.  Isaiah, Chapter 14, Verse 14…

ISAIAH 14:14

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds…I will make myself like the Most High.”

Each of us has a spiritual gift to give…are you giving yours?  That’s why we GO to church.  That’s what we bring to church.  You are going to church to bring your spiritual gift to me…for my benefit.  I am going to church to bring my spiritual gift to you…for your benefit.  We have been suckered into thinking that going to church is admirable when we go just to take.

How much money do you contribute to Barah Ministries?  If your answer is nothing, what’s up with that?  Everything you contribute earns you a tax deduction because Barah Ministries is a not-for-profit corporation.  When you go buy groceries this week, they aren’t tax deductible.

Giving at church is a standard of God.  He wants you to give cheerfully, intentionally, regularly, and generously.  Do you?  If not, why not?  (Notice, I'm asking this after the offering because this is not a guilt trip).  The "why not" is your mentality.  Do you understand that what you give, God will give back to you in abundance?

You do know, and it doesn't matter to many of you.  Many of you have been duped by Satan and his kingdom of death and darkness in the matter of giving AND in the matter of living.

Romans, Chapter 12, Verses 4 and 5…

ROMANS 12:4

For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same office...

ROMANS 12:5

...so we, who are many, are one body in union with Christ...and individually we are members one of another.

As Church Age believers, we are the Body of Christ…He is the Head.  Colossians, Chapter 1, Verse 18…

COLOSSIANS 1:18

The Lord is also head of the body…the Church…and He is the beginning…the firstborn from the dead…so He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

What does this body analogy mean?  It means that one of you in this ministry is theright hand and one of you is the left hand.  It’s almost impossible to wash yourhands without both hands working together.  In this simple way, God is teaching us a lesson every day.  We need each other.  First Corinthians, Chapter 12, Verse 12…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 12:12

For even as the body is one (an independent unit)…and yet the body has many members (parts dependent on each other)…and all the members are part of the body… though they are many, they are one body (cooperating interdependently)… so also is Christ (one in unity with the body of Christ…the Church).

Why doesn’t Barah Ministries grow?

It's because there are members of the body of Christ in this ministry who aren't doing their job.  Satan has convinced most of us that we must be instructed before acting.  So we wait for someone to tell us what to do.  We come to church to take, not to give.

Do you know that many of the changes and improvements that happen in Barah Ministries, I did not recommend?  People tell me what they are going to do for the ministry and they do it.

I didn’t tell anyone to have a Coeur d’Alene Conference for the last fourteen years.  I didn’t tell anyone to have a Pastor Appreciation Weekend.  I didn’t tell anyone to have a homecoming for the non-resident congregation members.  The list of “I didn’t tell anyone” goes on.

Did you ever think, on your way to church, that someone at church needs you today?  They are going through something in their lives that is hurting them, and they're confused about what to do about it.  You have the answer.  It's within your spiritual gift.  You'll never know if you come to church only to take.  Satan encourages us to take, take, take, and never to give.  Does that work?

Each of us is a part of Christ's body, and we do not all have the same work to do.

When one part of the body isn’t functioning, it’s illness.  Somewhere along the line, the people of this congregation got the idea that all they have to do is listen to the Word of God.  That’s not how God thinks of this ministry.  That’s not how God thinks of you.

We all wait for permission to do the right thing: to give ourselves to

each other.  We receive salvation and a spiritual gift, but we don’t give to each other with the gift God has given us.

I can't tell you how often I've heard people say, "I don't have to go to church to worship God."  That lie is partially true.  You can worship God from anywhere.  So why does God tell us not to forsake gathering together?  He tells us that because He knows who needs you.  He assembles a group of people who need you and He wants you to give what He has given you to them.  First Corinthians, Chapter 12, Verse 7…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 12:7

But to each one of us believers in Christ is given the manifestation of God the Holy Spirit (a spiritual gift) for the common good.

The common good is the good of all.  What do you BRING to church?  Romans, Chapter 12, Verses 6 to 8…

ROMANS 12:6

Since we each have a spiritual gift (the Greek word charisma)…that is different according to the grace given to us by God...each of us is to use the spiritual gift accordingly...if he has the spiritual gift of prophecy...he is to exercise the gift according to the proportion of his faith given by God...

God gives us the right amount of faith for the jobs He wants us to do.

ROMANS 12:7

...if he has the spiritual gift of service...he is to exercise the gift in his serving...or he who has the spiritual gift that teaches...he is to exercise the gift in his teaching...

ROMANS 12:8

...or he who has the spiritual gift to exhort, he is to exercise the gift in his exhortation...he who has the spiritual gift that gives...he is to exercise the gift with liberality...he who has the spiritual gift that leads...he is to exercise the gift with diligence...he who shows mercy, he is to exercise the gift with cheerfulness.

Prophecy.  Service.  Teaching.  Exhortation.  Giving.  Leadership.  Mercy.  These are just a few of the spiritual gifts.  God gave you these gifts so you would give them away to the people around you who need them.  If you’re not in fellowship with these people…if you aren’t getting to know these people…how can you know what they need?

“Why did God give you a spiritual gift?”  For me!  How many times have you been concerned with what I need?  I certainly am concerned for you.  I know you need the Word of God to shape your thinking, and I'm committed to providing it to you as often as possible.  Are you concerned for me the same way?  Do you spend any of your one hundred and twelve waking hours a week wondering what you can bring to the people in this ministry?

When you do, you will live as God expects you to live.  You won't wonder what your spiritual gift is…you'll know.  You won't be wondering who needs you…all of us do.  The body is in illness when one of us isn't functioning correctly.  You won't be taking…you'll be giving.  You won't live the passive life Satan promotes.  You'll live the active life God promotes.  You'll bring YOURSELF…YOUR MENTALITY…YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFT…IN HUMILITY…and you'll use it for the common good.

This is your future if you are a part of Barah Ministries.  This is the life we'll be living instead of just talking about it.

THE GOSPEL MESSAGE

The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race

The next ten minutes could be the ten most important minutes of your life.  You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life.  We want you to know that…

GOD WANTS YOU!

He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.

The Lord Jesus Christ created you!  He loves you unconditionally.  He forgives you for every sin you’ll ever commit.  He offers you His grace when you make mistakes.  He has always had you in His mind for all eternity.  He knows your name.  The Lord wants the best for you.  Have you ever had a human being love you this way?

Well, if you don't yet have a relationship with the Lord and Jesus Christ, He

considers you to be a SPIRITUALLY DEAD sinner who needs a Savior.  Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 23 says…

ROMANS 3:23

…all creatures have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 10 says…

ROMANS 3:10

…it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous…not even one…”

Your condition at physical birth IS NOT YOUR FAULT, but it is your circumstance.

Spiritual death, caused by sin, is a barrier between us and God.  Spiritual death is the first death.  Eternity in the Lake of Fire is the second death, and it’s your eternal fate if you close your eyes in this life as an unbeliever.  You do not want the second death!

God wants you to have a spiritual life.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 says…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22

…all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…but all who are in union with Christ will be made spiritually alive by God.

The Lord provides you with the Bible to illuminate the SPIRITUAL LIFE, which is your path to heaven.  John, Chapter 20, Verse 31 says…

JOHN 20:31

…these things written in the Bible have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ…(the Messiah…the Son of God…the Lord…who took on human form)…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in Hisname.

The Bible contains the Lord’s exact thinking.  It is your “owner’s manual”

for lifeThe good news is the Lord Jesus Christ did something about your sin

problem.  He has a plan for your salvation because He doesn’t want anyone to go to the Lake of Fire…Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…

SECOND PETER 3:9

The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation, as some accuse Him of...instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any to perish (in the Lake of Fire) but for all to come to repentance (a voluntary change of mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).

By your own choice, you can be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE, making you special in God's sight…Psalm 116, Verse 15 says…

PSALM 116:15

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones (His saints…His spiritually alive believers in Christ).

The fact that GOD WANTS YOU and has made a way for you to be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE is a great thing to know, especially as you get older, because everyone dies.  What's going to happen to you when you close your eyes in this life?  Will you go to heaven or will you go to hell?

It’s your choice.  How can you get to heaven?  RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, you can tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that is the moment of eternal life for you.  Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

The ONE WAY…the ONLY WAY to get to heaven is through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)… and I am the truth (through the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father (in heaven) but through believing in Me.”

Who is this God who saves you?  The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ

in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (Paul) delivered to you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

Believing in Jesus Christ is acknowledging that you can't do a thing

to get to heaven on your own.  You confirm that being "a good person" does not get you to heaven.  It's wiser to let God save you because once God does something, He never changes His mind!  In John, Chapter 10, Verses 28 and 29, the Lord says…

JOHN 10:28

“…I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life to believers in Christ, and they will never perish…and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

JOHN 10:29

My Father, who has given believers in Christ to me, is greater than all…and no one can snatch believers in Christ out of my Father’s hand.

You can’t lose your salvation.  If ANYONE says you can lose your salvation, they are lying to you.

God has an enemy, Satan, the ruler of this world.  He creates counterfeit lifestyles to blind your mind.  His strategy against the human race is RELIGION, and the religions of the world mislead you into thinking you're saved when you may not be.  Satan wants you to believe you can work your way to heaven, earning your own salvation.

Reject a relationship with Christ?  In Matthew, Chapter 25, Verse 30, the Lord shares the consequences…

MATTHEW 25:30

“Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness (the Lake of Fire)… and in

that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

So, heed the warning and accept the Lord’s invitation in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son of God has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

You can join me and a host of your believer friends in heaven when you close your eyes in this life!  Reject spiritual death.  Choose SPIRITUAL life right now!

CLOSING SONG INTRODUCTION

Let’s close with music!  If you present yourself to God as living and holy sacrifice, He won’t make you figure out how to use your spiritual gift.  James, Chapter 1, Verse 17 says…

JAMES 1:17

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from God the Father…the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

God will place in your mind precisely what the body needs from you.  Are you listening?  Here's Chris Tomlin, who gives us a perspective on God's gifts in the song GIFTS FROM GOD.  Reflect on the words.
