TODAY’S STUDY

If You Only Knew Who is On My Side

Abraham and his wife Sarah must have been the butt of many jokes during their lifetime, especially as they were advancing in years.  Abraham was impotent and Sarah was barren, yet they both clung to the hope that one day they would have a child.  And they must have felt humiliated at the teasing they received, except for one thought.  They had the Lord Jesus Christ on their side.  In this lesson, we’ll learn why Abraham and Sarah had so much confidence in the face of their circumstance when everyone around them doubted.

First, a few announcements…

TODAY’S STUDY

If You Only Knew Who is On My Side

To the resident and non-resident members of Barah Ministries,to our guests who join us from time to time, and to all believers in Christ…grace and peace to you from God our Father.

The Jews considered the Mosaic Law to be a standard for human conduct.  That lie is partially true.  It is the standard for conduct of a free nation.  The Jews decided the gift of the standard gave them special standing before God.  Paul now deals with this lie.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 13…

ROM 4:13

For the promise made by God to Abraham and to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not (never…absolutely not no how) through the (works of the Mosaic) Law, but it was given by God through the righteousness of faith.

Faith is what God blesses. God takes people like Abraham, people like you and me, people who are imperfect, guilt ridden, unworthy, ungodly, unrighteous, rebellious sinners, and asks them to take the gift that He is willing to give to such creatures…righteousness.  Abraham because a friend of God and the heir of the world simply by means of expressing faith and accepting a gift from a gracious God.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 14…

ROM 4:14

For if, for the sake of argument, those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void as a principle, and the promise of God is nullified…

In other words, if you can work for salvation then God is a liar.  Simply put, faith and law don’t mix.  Faith and grace don’t mix.  Faith alone is the key to eternal life.  God wants you to count on Him, and not on yourself.  By the way, God does not come to our desires to save ourselves, we come to His desire to save us.  Titus, Chapter 3, Verse 5…

TIT 3:5

The Lord Jesus Christ saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in self-righteousness (works), but instead, He saved us according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and by the renewing by God the Holy Spirit…

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 15…

ROM 4:15

…for the Law brings forth God’s wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no sin.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 16…

ROM 4:16

For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law (the Jews), but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham (the Gentiles), who is the father of us all…

A simple word articulates this idea beautifully…

WHOSOEVER

Faith is available to all.  God wants all to use the gift He gave.  Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verses 8 to 10…

EPH 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that grace, that faith, that resulting salvation are not of yourselves, it is the gift of God...

EPH 2:9

…they are not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

EPH 2:10

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

We look to what God has already done for salvation, and we avoid like the plague anything that we might do to get salvation.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 17…

ROM 4:17

…(as it is written, “A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead ones and who calls into being that which does not exist.

What has God the Father’s grace done for us?  He has brought us to life…He has paid the debt of our sin with His blood…He has made us righteous…He has declared our righteousness in the halls of heaven…and He keeps on declaring what is an establish and irreversible fact…that we are the righteousness of God because of His gracious gift, and ever will we be righteous.

BREAK

Somewhere over the Rainbow

Welcome back!

Turn in your bibles to Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 18…justification by faith is our subject in this passage of Romans…faith involves believing in things when common sense tells you not to.  Hebrews, Chapter 11, Verse 1 says…

HEB 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Abraham believed…Abraham had faith…even when common sense told him not to.  Romans Chapter 4, Verse 18…

ROM 4:18

In hope against hope Abraham believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken to Him by God, “SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.”

Abraham is one example of faith.  You are another.  Those of you who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ have faith.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 19…

ROM 4:19

Without becoming weak in faith Abraham contemplated his own body, which was now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and he contemplated the deadness of Sarah’s womb…

As we, mere human beings, contemplate our circumstances we doubt.  We doubt because we know we are hopeless and helpless to do the big things on our own.  We’re even hopeless and helpless to do the smallest of things at times, like simply believing in the Lord.  He was sexually dead, his wife was beyond child bearing age, yet He had a promise directly from God.  Romans Chapter 4, Verse 17a…

ROM 4:17a

…as it is written, “A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU, ABRAHAM…”

Abraham contemplated in his heart how this promise could be true.  It’s just like you and I…I often wonder where the resources will come from…how it is possible for someone or something so small to grow…for someone so weak to be strong…for a failure to be a champion…we all have the same concerns…do you have faith that God can get anything done?  Luke, Chapter 1, Verse 37…

LUK 1:37

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 20…if you said, “Yes, God can do anything,” Abraham agrees with you in faith…

ROM 4:20

…yet, with respect to the promise of God, Abraham did not waver in unbelief but was strengthened inwardly by God in faith, giving glory to God…

Sarah had the same faith…Hebrews, Chapter 11, Verse 11b…

HEB 11:11b

By faith…Sarah considered Him faithful who had promised.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 21…

ROM 4:21

…and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.

Now the whole verse for Sarah’s faith…Hebrews, Chapter 11, Verse 11…

HEB 11:11

By faith even Sarah herself received the ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life (well beyond the childbearing years), since she considered the Lord Jesus Christ faithful who had made the promise.

When studying this passage it brought tears to my eyes.  It was the culmination of the clarity I needed in my soul.  Why have I always been able to rise above every circumstance without letting it crush me, no matter the severity?  Why is it I feel invincible inside…impenetrable…unable to be crushed…it’s because I, like Abraham, could look well beyond the circumstances to the source of my life and the source of all my blessings, both in adversity and in prosperity…CHRIST!  CHRIST!  CHRIST!  I could look to Christ with faith.  Deuteronomy, Chapter 31, Verse 8…

DEU 31:8

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

I love this promise.  I live this promise.  I infect people with this promise… without them even knowing it.  Our focus as Christians is CHRIST!  Turn to Hebrews Chapter 12…

HEB 12:1

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of Old Testament witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and let us also lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us, surrounding us on all sides, and let us run with endurance the race of our lives that is set before us…

HEB 12:2

…all the while fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the Cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God the Father.

HEB 12:3

For consider the Lord Jesus Christ (contemplate Him in your soul) who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart (fainting in your souls).

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 22…

ROM 4:22

Therefore FAITH WAS ALSO CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 23…

ROM 4:23

Now not for Abraham’s sake only was it written that righteousness was credited to him by means of faith…

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 24…

ROM 4:24

…but for our sake also it was written, to whom it also will be credited, as those who believe in God the Father who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead…

Romans Chapter 4, Verse 25…

ROM 4:25

The Lord Jesus Christ, who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised from the dead because of our need for justification.

If you only knew who is on my side…

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ

1TH 5:16-18

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God the Father’s will for you (who are) in (union with) Christ Jesus.

1PE 5:6-7

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God the Father, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

EXO 14:13

“Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today…”

ISA 40:29

He gives strength to the weary, to him who lacks might He increases power.
