Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

An interesting passage from the book, “God, Just Tell Me What To Do”

by Michael Youssef…

BOOK EXCERPT
God, Just Tell Me What To Do

by Michael Youssef

Why do some Christians, in times of crisis or suffering, actually put more distance between themselves and the Lord instead of turning to Him for help? Why do they withdraw from prayer and from fellowship with God?  Why do they feel they can’t bring their honest emotions and pain into God’s presence?

I think there are two possible reasons why some Christians withdraw from God.  First, I think many Christians have the wrong concept of suffering. They believe that if life has dealt them a painful blow or a setback, then it must be because God is angry with them. So, just as children often avoid an angry parent, Christians sometimes avoid God if they think He is angry with them.

Some Christians have never internalized God’s grace for their lives. They have committed their lives to Christ, they are saved by grace, they are born again…but they don’t accept the reality of God’s grace.

They have never let go of the feelings of guilt, shame, and inadequacy they feel because of their past sins. God the Father is chasing after them, trying to gather them into His arms to tell them, “All is forgiven! My Son, Jesus Christ, paid the FULL price of your sins.”

But most Christians think God the Father is chasing them to punish them. So they run from him like guilty, frightened children. Just when they need their loving Father the most, they hide from Him.

Second, many people avoid prayer and fellowship with God because they are angry with God. They are going through a difficult time-- a loss, a crisis, an illness, an injury, a financial setback, a strained or broken relationship-- and they blame God for those hurtful circumstances. As a result, they want nothing to do with God because they think He is ruining their lives.

Perhaps they never consider that God has an enemy who wants to ruin their lives.  Maybe it is God’s enemy that has sponsored the suffering, and God simply allowed it for your benefit.

Let’s be clear on one thing, so we don’t lose the context in our study of Romans 6.  We stopped to address an issue…ignorance…willful ignorance concerning God’s blessings.  If you are a Christian, and I am your enemy (like Satan is), I want you to listen to my lies so you destroy yourself, your relationships, and everything that is good in your life.  And I want you to reject all the assets God has provided for you and has placed at your disposal.  Are you willingly following “the flesh’s” lead?

Welcome to a place where we can expose the insidious and cunning strategies of Satan and the kingdom of death, and where we can counteract them with the Word of God…alive…powerful…and piercing.

Help us to hear Your truth…give us the courage and the confidence to reject the lies…show us how to dismiss the temptations of the flesh…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit...in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

How Do You Counteract the Lies of the Flesh?

Turn in your bibles to Matthew, Chapter 4.  In this passage we’ll examine how the Lord Jesus Christ counters the lies of His enemy…a model for how we must handle the enemy.  In Second Corinthians, Chapter 2, Verse 11, we learn that following God’s way of doing things is critical…

2CO 2:11

…so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes (strategies).

TODAY’S STUDY

How Do You Counteract the Lies of the Flesh?

With every life decision you have a choice…you can listen to the flesh, or you can listen to the Spirit.  Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

GAL 5:17

For the flesh sets its desire against (God) the (Holy) Spirit, and (God) the (Holy) Spirit (sets His desire) against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

You may not do the things you please?  Alas…both the flesh and the Holy Spirit are more powerful than your will.  So the question becomes, “How do I, as a Christian, in my Christian Walk, counteract the lies of the flesh?”  The Lord Jesus Christ, in His time on earth, had a similar challenge… Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verse 15…

HEB 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Let’s be clear on one thing…the Lord Jesus Christ did not have Adam’s SIN…He was born of a virgin, and the SIN from Adam is passed down through our human fathers…God the Holy Spirit stood in for the missing human father in the birth of Jesus Christ’s humanity…

MAT 1:20

But when Joseph had considered divorcing Mary, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

So the Lord did not have “the flesh,” Satan’s inside agent.  Satan had to tempt the Lord personally.  Let’s see how the Lord handled it and what we can learn from Him.  Matthew, Chapter 4, Verse 1…

MAT 4:1

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

MAT 4:2

And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

MAT 4:3

And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, (and I know you are) command that these stones become bread.”

MAT 4:4

But the Lord Jesus Christ answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God the Father.’”

MAT 4:5

Then the devil took Jesus into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple…

MAT 4:6

…and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God (and I know you are), throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

MAT 4:7

Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

MAT 4:8

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory…

MAT 4:9

…and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”

MAT 4:10

Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”

MAT 4:11

Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

Take a five-minute break and we’ll learn about this is a powerful way to counteract “the flesh.”

BREAK

When I Think About Home

Welcome back!  Hebrews, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

HEB 5:8

Although Jesus Christ was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.

So do we.  Let’s see what Jesus learned in the desert, when his He was being tempted by the devil.  Matthew, Chapter 4, beginning at Verse 1…

MAT 4:1

Then Jesus was led up by God the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Notice…God never leaves us alone when we are going through a trial.  Let me repeat that…God never leaves us alone when we are going through a trial.  Amen!  Lie.  “I’m doing this all by myself.”  Lie!

MAT 4:2

And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

Duh!

MAT 4:3

And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, (and I know you are) command that these stones become bread.”

Satan is asking the Lord to operate outside of the will of His Father.  Satan is tempting the Lord to take matters into His own hands, especially because the Lord has the power to do so.

MAT 4:4

But the Lord Jesus Christ answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread (physical food) alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God the Father (spiritual food).’”

Notice how the Lord counteracted the lie…IT IS WRITTEN.

MAT 4:5

Then the devil took Jesus into the holy city (Jerusalem) and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple…

MAT 4:6

…and Satan said to Jesus, “If You are the Son of God (and I know you are), throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Satan is brilliant…okay…you want to quote Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, Verse 3, Lord?  I can quote Scripture, too!  However, Satan, AS ALWAYS, takes Scripture out of context.  Matthew, Chapter 4, Verse 7…

MAT 4:7

Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Notice how the Lord counteracted the lie…IT IS WRITTEN.  He used faith in the Word of God to counteract the lie.

MAT 4:8

Again, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory…

MAT 4:9

…and Satan said to Jesus, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”

This was a legitimate offer, because Satan is the ruler of this world.  But it was a legitimate offer from a liar, and the father of all lies.  Jesus knew that Satan would promise, and not deliver.  Satan never keeps the promises of His temptations.

MAT 4:10

Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”

Notice how the Lord counteracted the lie…IT IS WRITTEN.

MAT 4:11

Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

How do you counteract the lies of “the flesh?”  IT IS WRITTEN!  You use the Word of God to stabilize your mentality in times of temptation.  Your will may not be more powerful than “the flesh,” but you are not powerless to “the flesh.”  Follow God’s will…turn to God’s lead…and He will give you the power to resist in the evil day.  First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 9…

1PE 5:9

But resist Satan, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ

are Guarantees!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.

JOH 3:36

He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the ZOE life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the Zoe) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father abides on him.”
