Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

Today we celebrate The Lord’s Supper, our monthly expression of gratitude…a time when, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we look back to the Cross…and in this celebration we remember the sacrifice, the unconditional love, and the hope the Lord provided for us through the sacrifice of His blood.  The Lord Jesus Christ was broken for us.  First Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 24…

1PE 2:24

…the Lord Jesus Christ Himself bore our sins in His own body on the Cross, so that we believers in Christ might die to (the sovereignty of) sin and so that we might live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

The Lord purchased us, freeing us from the slavery of spiritual death… Galatians, Chapter 3, Verse 13…

GAL 3:13

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—

The Lord Jesus Christ’s Work on the Cross became the ONLY payment for our sins that is acceptable to God the Father…First John, Chapter 2, Verses 1 and 2…

1JO 2:1

My little children, I (John) am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, and we all do, we have an Advocate with God the Father…Jesus Christ the ONLY righteous One…

1JO 2:2

…and Jesus Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only (as believers in Christ), but also for those of the whole world (unbelievers as well).

All the members of the Godhead love all their creatures unconditionally, and they don’t just talk about their love…they show it...Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 8…

ROM 5:8

But God the Father demonstrates His own unconditional love toward us creatures, in that while we were sinners (and while we were ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers), Christ died for us.

Welcome to the celebration of The Lord’s Supper, a reminder of God’s unconditional love for us.

What Held You On The Cross

As God prepares our memories for reflection, let’s hear June Murphy worship our Lord in song.  The opening song is WHAT HELD YOU ON THE CROSS.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful Heavenly Father for the privilege of studying the absolute

truth...the Word of God…

Thank you for making our lives challenging…thank you for always inviting us to discomfort…because we know that left to our own devices we would sit idly by and rot away…thanks for the constant allowance of obstacles and tribulation from the kingdom of death that build up our spiritual muscles so we can take on all of life’s issues…

Show us how to be perfect reflections of Your Will and Your Word…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit...in Christ’s name... Amen.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Dearth is the Tribulation of the Spiritual Life

What is the spiritual life progression that Jesus Christ offered us through His Cross?  There are five stages of spiritual progression…

THE LORD’S OFFER OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESSION

Design

Death

Destiny

Dearth

Divine

…DESIGN, DEATH, DESTINY, DEARTH, and the DIVINE.  As time goes on in our spiritual lives we start to realize the significance of these stages…they are a message from God that we are significant to Him…they are a message that He bothered to create a path that each of us can easily follow.  In this Lord’s Supper Celebration, we continue our look at our spiritual life’s progression…we trust the bible to reveal how the spiritual life stages play out with the imperfect individuals that God singles out in the bible as examples for us. In today’s lesson we’ll continue our look at the spiritual stage called DEARTH, and we’ll connect it to our current study of the sixth chapter of Romans…first a few announcements…

OFFERING VERSE

HEB 12:5-6

…and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons…

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

Nor faint when you are reproved by Him;

For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines,

And He scourges every son whom He receives.”

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Dearth is the Tribulation of the Spiritual Life

Part One of the Lord’s spiritual life progression is DESIGN.  Design always demands a designer, and God the Father has designed a perfect and personal plan for His imperfect creatures…creatures like Moses…the father of the Jewish Nation…Exodus, Chapter 3, Verses 6 to 11…

EXO 3:6

The Lord said to Moses, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

EXO 3:7

The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people (the Jews) who are in Egypt, and I have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters…for I am aware of their sufferings.”

EXO 3:8

“So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey (ideal land for raising goats and cows)…”

EXO 3:9

“Now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me (in prayer); furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.”

EXO 3:10

“Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.”

EXO 3:11

But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?”

Moses was right.  In his own power, he could not do the job.  But the Lord had a DESIGN for Moses’s life.  And with divine power, anything is possible for Moses.

Part Two of the Lord’s spiritual life progression is DEATH.  Moses had to face the possibility of death and the challenge of God’s design for His life…

In Exodus, Chapter 5, Verses 1 and 2…one of Moses’s first challenges was to approach the tyrant oppressor, Pharaoh, a job for which he had been trained…but Moses was scared…yet he felt the fear and trusted the Lord’s power anyway…

EXO 5:1

And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

EXO 5:2

But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”

Pharaoh was an unbeliever.  The Lord meant nothing to him.  After we enjoy the elements, you’ll hear about the other stages in the progression of Moses’s spiritual life.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Enjoying the Elements

Following God’s request, we keep on celebrating CHRIST and His Cross on a regular basis…we eat to remember who He is…His PERSON…we drink to remember His WORK, the voluntary sacrifice He made at the Cross on our behalf…and we are grateful for what God has done for us.  First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 23 and 24 say…

1CO 11:23

For I, Paul received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that

the Lord Jesus Christ on the night in which He was betrayed took bread…

1CO 11:24

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is, and keeps on being My body, which is broken for you; keep on doing this celebration for the purpose of remembering Me.”

When we eat the bread during the Lord’s Supper Celebration, we remember THE PERSON of the Lord Jesus Christ.

When we drink the cup, we remember THE WORK of the Lord Jesus Christ.

First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 25 and 26 say…

1CO 11:25

In the same way the Lord Jesus Christ took the cup after supper, representing His death on the Cross, saying, “This cup is a new testament forged with My blood; keep on doing this celebration, as often as you drink it, for the purpose of remembering Me.”

1CO 11:26

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

As you enjoy the bread and the cup, enjoy the memory of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well. Now and always, as the Lord’s Supper song reminds us...Give Thanks.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION

Dearth is the Tribulation of the Spiritual Life

Part Three of the Lord’s spiritual life progression is DESTINY.  The Jews have a destiny…and even thought the Jews were afraid to leave the “comforts” of Egypt…a “comfort” with what they knew…they followed Moses’s lead…here are a few verses from Exodus, Chapter 13…

EXO 13:3

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of slavery; for by a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place.”

The Lord’s hand on your life is more powerful than any hand.

EXO 13:17

Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.”

EXO 13:18

Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up in martial array from the land of Egypt.

The Lord led the Jews through the more difficult path.  The Egyptians, after realizing the mistake they had made in freeing “the help,” went after the Jews…Exodus, Chapter 14, Verses 5 to 7…

EXO 14:5

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

EXO 14:6

So Pharaoh made his chariot ready and took his soldiers with him…

EXO 14:7

…and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.

Interesting thing…Pharaoh took 600 men to subdue 600,000 men.  When we come face-to-face with our DESTINY, it will look like a hopeless situation.  And it IS a hopeless situation if we are counting on our own power to solve our problems.  Now the Egyptians had second thoughts about their slaves…AND the Jews had second thoughts about freedom… Exodus, Chapter 14, Verses 11 to 14…

EXO 14:11

Then the Jews said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt?

EXO 14:12

Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?’  For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

EXO 14:13

But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever.”

EXO 14:14

“The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”

The Red Sea was parted…the Egyptians were killed…the Jews were saved…a miraculous deliverance that they witnessed, and that they could not have accomplished in their own power…then next, a trip into the DEARTH of the dessert…for forty years…a next stage they did not expect…Exodus, Chapter 17, Verses 1 to 3…

EXO 17:1

Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.

EXO 17:2

Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”

EXO 17:3

But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

A group of people who had just been freed from slavery…a group of people who had just been saved from a return to that slavery, and perhaps from death…a group of people who had witnessed the miracle of the parting of the red Sea…now had confidence neither in the leader who had led them out nor in the God of their deliverance…so much like us.  What is dearth?  It is…

DEARTH

A scarcity…a lack

We lack the power to live the Christian Way of Life.  Our life demonstrates it again and again and again.  Lucky for us that we have the power of God at our disposal.  We can do all things through Him who strengthens us by continuing to pour His enabling power into us.  Thank you Jesus!

The Promises of the Lord Jesus Christ

are Guarantees!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.

JOH 3:36

He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the ZOE life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the Zoe) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father abides on him.”
