Welcome To

BARAH MINISTRIES

a Christian Church

Rory Clark

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a worldwide Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.

In Psalm 121, the Psalmist, as he walked through the hills around Jerusalem, contemplated his life…just as we must in every waking moment…

PSA 121:1

I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come?

PSA 121:2

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He realizes His help will come from the Sovereign God of the Universe, who accomplished such routine tasks as Creation.  Quite often we forget how powerful our God is…now he talks to a companion.

PSA 121:3

The Lord will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.

PSA 121:4

Behold, the Lord, who keeps Israel, will neither slumber nor sleep.

PSA 121:5

The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.

PSA 121:6

The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night.

PSA 121:7

The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.

PSA 121:8

The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.

Welcome to a place where you can become aware of the Lord’s power and protection.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful Heavenly Father for the privilege of studying the absolute

truth...the Word of God…

Thank you for sending God the Holy Sprit to lead us…to be our source of enabling power…thank you for the power of prayer which allows us to access divine omnipotence and put it to work on the problems of our lives…

Remind us that there is no power greater than Yours…remind us not to treat human sources of power as equal to You…help us to really know you Father, not as an interesting concept but as a real Person who is an ever present help in time of trouble…remind us over and over again in our soul that there is no one like You…and finally Father, we ask you to send Your immediate and powerful resources to the persecuted church throughout the world…let them feel Your presence and see Your resources in the midst of their plight…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit...in Christ’s name... Amen.

TODAY’S STUDY

The Flesh Wants You to Surrender

There probably aren’t too many people in the United States of America who haven’t heard of or seen the movie The Wizard of Oz.  The movie was based on a book of the same name written by Frank Baum.  The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale into a Land called Oz, after being swept away from her farm home in Kansas during a cyclone.

In one scene from the movie, the Wicked Witch of the West flies over the skies of Oz and spells out a message in a black smoke trail that looks like this for those of you watching…

SURRENDER DOROTHY SLIDE

…for those of you who are listening, you’ll have to use your imagination… the Wicked Witch of the West is spelling out two words…Surrender Dorothy…in a trail of ominous looking black smoke.

This is the same message THE FLESH is sending to believers in Christ.  Surrender Believers.  Your flesh wants to dominate your life, and wants you to give in to it.  It seeks to neutralize your life…to make you forget about who you are as a believer, and to forget about all the divine assets that are at your disposal…your union with Christ…the absolute righteousness of God imputed to you…you are holy… you are blameless… you are justified… you are redeemed… you are a new creature… you are a royal priest… you are an ambassador for Christ… you are indwelled by the entire Trinity… you are a saint…you are redeemed, and reconciled, and expiated…and if those are just words to you…then maybe you already have surrendered your resurrection life, only to adopt the counterfeit and fraudulent power system offered by the kingdom of death.

Well maybe the suggestion that the flesh is making to you…Surrender Believer…isn’t such a bad idea if you surrender to the right power.  IN this lesson we’ll investigate the idea.

2CO 9:7

Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful (grace oriented) giver.

OFFERING VERSE

HEB 13:1

Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.  Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.

TODAY’S STUDY

The Flesh Wants You to Surrender

A final look at the second passage in Romans 7…Romans, Chapter 7, Verses 7 to 13…Paul addresses the enemies of grace who think human will power can control SIN and that human will power can keep the LAW…these are the ones who want us to use inferior human power for all things spiritual instead of accepting divine omnipotence, the free grace gift power of a loving, gracious and perfect God.  Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 7…

ROM 7:7

What shall we say then? Is the Mosaic Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Mosaic Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Mosaic Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

The LAW reveals our sinfulness…it makes us conscious of SIN…it illuminates our weaknesses.  You want to drive a cocaine addict crazy?  Tell them they can’t have cocaine.  The LAW will bring out a drive in them that is powerfully insane.

The LAW shines a mirror on our inner game…it illuminates our evil and corrupt thoughts that we accept as a substitute inadequate power for our lives…Deuteronomy, Chapter 5, Verse 21…

DEU 5:21

‘You shall not covet (have lust or desire in your mind for) your neighbor’s wife, and you shall not desire (have lust or desire in your mind for) your neighbor’s house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or (have lust or desire in your mind for) anything that belongs to your neighbor.’

Christianity does not run on inferior human power.  Divine power is the

rudder of the Christian life, and a Christian who is substituting inferior power to run the Christian Way of Life is doomed to fail…is rudderless… but let’s face it…there are many people, as my mom used to say, who “don't think that fat meat is greasy.”  There are many of us that hear the Word of God, but run another game.  We don’t believe that we will fail with the human power game.

As we look at this Deuteronomy verse, we realize that the outer game is not the only game…the outer game eventually reveals our inner game.  Evil desire in the inner game always manifests itself in the outer game…meaning, it becomes clearly visible.  What does your outer game reveal about your inner game?  Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 8…

ROM 7:8

But sin, seizing opportunity through the commandment, surfaced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Mosaic Law sin is dead.

Paul is saved at the time of this writing…do you remember back to the time when you were first saved?  Do you remember how happy that time was?  Many of us want to go out and make sure everyone else is saved, too, especially those people in our lives who want absolutely nothing to do with God.  But what did you know, at that time, about your SIN “in Adam?”  What did you know at that time about the purpose of the LAW?  What did you know at that time about indwelling sin…THE FLESH?  Not much.  We’ve been learning about it in these two chapters of Romans (6 and 7) and we still don’t know much about the “arm bar” trio or what to do about them.

When the law came in…when the law was given…SIN seized its opportunity.  SIN attacked.  When it does, we, like Paul, seek to combat it with our own power…a losing battle.  Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 9…

ROM 7:9

I was once alive apart from (and with no connection to) the Mosaic Law; but when the commandment came (to my awareness), sin became alive and I died…

Without the law, sin would be quiet…it would not rear its ugly head.  It

would exist and it would lie in wait for a prohibition or for an authority to

reject.

You experience this when you set New Year’s resolutions.  You experience this when you set goals.  As soon as you do, indwelling sin rears its ugly head and rebels against your desires.  It rejects your resolutions.  It rejects your goals.  It seeks to sabotage them.  And it succeeds.

So should we not set goals?  May it never be!  Just be aware who delivers the victory…First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 57…

1CO 15:57

…but thanks be to God the Father, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Stay in your places please, and let’s take a music break.  The words are on the screen and in your notes.

Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 10…

ROM 7:10

…and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me…

Our deliverance from death does not come by means of a “concept” like human will power…our deliverance from death comes through a Person…the Lord Jesus Christ… through a Person…God the Holy Spirit…two Persons with one and the same essence.  If you want to surrender believers, surrender to them!  Second Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verses 2 to 9…

2CO 3:2

You believers in Christ are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men…

The compassion of a Pastor…

2CO 3:3

…and it is being manifested (made clearly visible) that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but written with the Spirit of the living (and indwelling) God, not written on tablets of stone (like the Mosaic Law) but written on tablets of human hearts.

2CO 3:4

Such confidence we have through our union with Christ toward God the Father.

2CO 3:5

Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God the Father…

Knowing that human power is no power at all…as believers in Christ we are completely dependent on God the Holy Spirit…surrender!  The Lord allows us to continue trying to make “the flesh” obedient to our will until we recognize our powerlessness to accomplish the feat.  When we turn to look for deliverance, what do we see?  Christ was crucified…Christ was resurrected from the dead…we have faith in Christ for salvation…we have faith in God the Holy Spirit for sanctification.  Second Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verse 6…

2CO 3:6

…(God the Father) who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter (of the new covenant) but of the Spirit (of the new covenant); for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

2CO 3:7

But if the ministry of death, in letters engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was…

2CO 3:8

…how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory?

If fraudulent human power and human resources seem to work…what do you think divine omnipotence will do?  Second Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verse 9…

2CO 3:9

For if the ministry of condemnation has glory, much more does the ministry of righteousness abound in glory.

Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 11…

ROM 7:11

…for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

What was killed in Paul was any hope of delivering himself from SIN and the LAW and the FLESH.  He had to surrender to God the Holy Spirit.  But at this time in his life, Paul still thought he was something when he is nothing.  He was deceiving himself.  Paul had to say goodbye to the deception of the “I’m getting better” life.  As we run a fraudulent, rudderless lifestyle, God allows things to happen to us so that we will learn.

But here’s the problem…when we fail to subdue the flesh with our own power, we think we are disappointing God.  When we can’t keep the law, we think we are disappointing God.  When we sin, we think we are disappointing God.  Amen?  We are not.  We are learning…sometimes, unfortunately, the hard way.  Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 12…

ROM 7:12

So then, the Mosaic Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

The Mosaic Law, we conclude is a holy instrument…it was created by God…it was written by God…it was communicated on tablets of stone to Moses…it was passed on to mankind by Moses…it had a purpose.  It accomplished its purpose.  Paul is saying here that God is righteous and His laws are righteous.  Then he turns the spotlight on self… Romans, Chapter 7, Verse 13…

ROM 7:13

Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly (exceedingly) sinful.

Paul concludes that indwelling SIN brought death to him…and the LAW illuminated the presence of indwelling SIN…and indwelling SIN is called “the flesh,” a sin manufacturing plant that produces nothing good.

As believers in Christ, after salvation, we have a lifetime of conflict with indwelling SIN…“the flesh.”  The flesh wants you to surrender…it wants to control your life.  Do what it asks!  Surrender!  But not to “the flesh.”  Surrender to God the Holy Spirit.  Give up your struggle…give up your battle with “the flesh” knowing that you can never defeat it.  Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 3…

PHI 3:3

…for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in union with Christ Jesus and who put no confidence in the flesh…

Just as Christians are never to live a “Do It Yourself Life,” they are also never to live an “Undo it Yourself” life.  Romans 7 is not outlining the Christian Way of Life…it’s outlining the Christian Way of Life gone bad.  Yet many Christians think Romans 7 is as good as it gets for Christians.  They’re dead wrong.

God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves…Salvation… Sanctification…Glorification.  Galatians, Chapter 3, Verses 2 and 3…

GAL 3:2

This is the only thing I want to find out from you (Galatian believers): did you receive God the Holy Spirit by the works of the Mosaic Law, or by hearing with faith?

GAL 3:3

Are you so foolish? Having begun your union with Christ by the agency of God the Holy Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

May it never be!  When we place our confidence in the flesh, the result is…

CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH

If you think you are under the LAW…

Struggle

NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH

When you know you are in the sphere of grace…

 Peace

   Faith

Hope

Love

Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 25…

GAL 5:25

If we live by the Spirit, and all believers in Christ do, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Let us construct a lifestyle that is under the direction of God the Holy Spirit only.  Surrender to Him.  Galatians, Chapter 5, Verse 16…

GAL 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not (no not never!) carry out the desire of the flesh.

When the Lord Jesus Christ

Promises Salvation, It’s a Guarantee!

ACT 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

JOH 14:6

Jesus said to doubting Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.

JOH 3:36

He who believes in the Son has eternal life (the ZOE life); but he who does not obey the (command to believe in the) Son will not see (the Zoe) life, but instead the wrath of God the Father abides on him.”

CLOSING SONG

How Great Thou Art

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds thy hands hath made

I see the stars…I hear the roaring thunder

Thy power throughout the universe displayed

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

HOW GREAT THOU ART

And when I think that God His Son not sparing

Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in

That on the cross, my burdens gladly bearing

He bled and died to take away my sin

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

HOW GREAT THOU ART

When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation

To bring me home, what joy shall fill my heart,

And I shall bow in humble adoration

And there proclaim, my God how great thou art

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee

How great thou art, how great thou art

How great thou art, how great thou art
