What is Sovereignty?

 

SOVEREIGNTY

The Lord Jesus Christ is supreme in power and authority…there is absolutely nothing that happens in the universe that is outside of his influence and authority.  He is the ultimate source of everything that exists. Only He can make those claims, and the truth of these claims are what makes Him superior to all other gods and makes Him, and Him alone, worthy of worship.

 

Revelation, Chapter 21, Verse 6…

 

REV 21:6

Then He (the Lord Jesus Christ) said to me (John, the author of the book of Revelation), “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.”

 

The Lord Jesus Christ is the one who is in control of everything…including our salvation, and that makes Him the Sovereign One…Colossians, Chapter 1, Verse 16…

 

COL 1:16

For by Him (the Lord Jesus Christ) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

 

The Lord Jesus Christ is your Creator!  What did Job have to say about the Lord’s sovereignty?  Job, Chapter 42, Verse 2…

 

JOB 42:2

“I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

 

The Lord’s sovereignty caused Paul to exclaim, in Romans, Chapter 11, Verse 33…

 

ROM 11:33

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How

unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

 

The natural mind…the enemy of God, Satan…the world system of thought…and the flesh…does not accept the things of God…does not want to believe that God has ultimate will…which is another great term for sovereignty…ultimate will…the enemy of God, Satan, wants to usurp the will of God…and he can’t.  Psalm 103, Verse 19…

 

PSA 103:19

The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over ALL.

 

Jeremiah, Chapter 32, Verse 17…

 

JER 32:17

‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You…’

 

Biblical scholar Charles Ryrie describes God’s sovereignty this way…

 

CHARLES RYRIE ON SOVEREIGNTY

It means principal, chief, supreme…it speaks first of position…God is the chief Being in the universe…then of power…God has all the power in the universe…how the Lord exercises that power is revealed in the Scriptures. A sovereign God could be a dictator…but God is not…a sovereign God could abdicate the use of his powers…God has not…ultimately God is in control of all things, though He may choose to let certain events occur which He does not sponsor…

 

Indeed nothing happens in the universe without God’s knowledge and without God’s permission.  And we can be comforted by Romans, Chapter 8, Verse 28…

 

ROM 8:28

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

 

A sovereign God is the cause of all things.
