Teaching the Word of God
Verse-by-Verse
RORY CLARK
Pastor-Teacher
Good Morning!
I’m Pastor Rory Clark welcoming you to a Bible lesson with Barah Ministries.
This online ministry is a great place to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ and to be introduced to the sacrifice He made for all human beings, including you, so all of His creatures could have a relationship with Him.
As a Christian, when you study the Word of God, you can develop a deep, intimate and personal relationship with the Savior of the world and the Sovereign God of the Universe…our Lord Jesus Christ. You can get to know Him as a Person and not think of Him as a concept.
Studying the Bible is one of the best gifts you give yourself every day.
Here at Barah Ministries, we’re more than glad to provide a place for you to get accurate teaching that paints a vivid picture of the significance of the Person and the Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and how He matters in your life.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON
The Gospel of John is Alive and Powerful
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verse 12 describes the Word of God…
HEBREWS 4:12
For the Word of God is alive and powerful…sharper than any two-edged sword… and it’s piercing…as far as the division of the soul and the spirit…of both
joints and marrow…and it’s a critic of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Since this is true, it follows that the Gospel of John is the same: alive, powerful, sharp, piercing, and critical of our lives, our thoughts, and our feelings. Thank the Lord for providing His guiding light in the kingdom of darkness.
As believers in Christ who listen to the lesson of Barah Ministries, we learn the Word of God verse-by-verse. But that’s not enough for Christians. We also need to meditate on the Word of God and to evaluate how we apply its precepts to our lives. Joshua, Chapter 1, Verse 8 says…
JOSHUA 1:8
This Word of God shall not depart from your mouth…but you shall meditate on it day and night…so you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it… for then you will make your lives prosperous…and then you will have success.
The Word of God is a roadmap for our feet and a light for our path…a light in this dark place called planet earth…Satan’s kingdom.
In Colossians, Chapter 3, Verse 6 the apostle Paul encourages us…
COLOSSIANS 3:16
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…and with all spiritual wisdom teach and admonish one another (said another way…instruct, advise, and warn each other) with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God the Father.
We have completed the study of three of the twenty-one chapters of the Gospel of John. Before we move on to Chapter 4, some meditation is in order. In today’s lesson, we’ll review the major themes of the first three lessons and see how we can apply them to our lives.
And as we do regularly, honoring the Lord’s command, we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper today. Get your bread and your wine, settle in, and join in the celebration.
OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s hear some music! The Lord tells it like it is in Isaiah, Chapter 45, Verse 5. He says…
ISAIAH 45:5a
“I am the Lord…and…besides Me there is no (other) God.”
In song, Don Moen says it this way as He speaks to the Lord…THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU. Let’s listen.

OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray...
We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…
Father, from our beginnings You have given us Your Word…it is a lamp for our feet and a light for our paths…it is alive and powerful and sharp and piercing and critical…it is God-breathed…it comes directly from You…it does not fade…it is not temporary…it endures forever…it is truth…it is a way to proceed…it is trustworthy…it wipes out our fears…it moves us from confusion to clarity…it shows us the victory Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, obtained for us at the Cross…
…as we study today’s lesson, emblazon in our hearts a deep trust for Your Word and help us to value it as the primary guide in our lives, powered by the enablement of God the Holy Spirit…help us to meditate on its precepts moment by moment as we make decisions is our lives…and show us how to share it with others, especially other believers in Christ…
…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON
The Gospel of John is Alive and Powerful
LESSON PART ONE
Before we transition from John, Chapter 3 to John, Chapter 4 we’ll reflect on the lessons the apostle John taught us in the first three chapters of his gospel, and we’ll ask ourselves how these lessons apply to our lives.
What are the themes of John Chapters 1 to 3?
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER ONE
1
The Word…the identity of the Lord (God the Son)
2
The Lord is the Creator
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER ONE
3
The Incarnation…the Lord coming to earth in human form as Jesus…the Christ…a phenomenon known as The Hypostatic Union
4
The Lord’s Titles…most notably the Lamb of God as revealed by John the Baptist, God’s messenger
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER ONE
5
The Light versus the darkness
6
The Unbeliever’s Response to the Light
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER TWO
7
The Transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament
8
The Cleansing of the Temple…the Father’s house is not a place for monkey
business
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER THREE
9
The Conversation with the Pharisee Nicodemus about the New Birth…Salvation Comes from God…You Must Be Born Again
10
A Foreshadowing of the Cross
THE THEMES OF JOHN CHAPTER THREE
11
God’s Love for All Mankind, especially “the world”
12
The Lord’s Motivation…the Gift of Eternal Life
Let’s look at the themes and apply them to our lives.
The Lord’s Identity
1
The Lord is the Word. He is God. John, Chapter 1, Verse 1…
JOHN 1:1
In the beginning (not a beginning) was the Word (the Lord…God the Son) … and
the Word (the Lord…God the Son) was with God the Father…and THE WORD WAS GOD.
The Lord is the logos…the Word…the pre-existent, divine Word who was with
God the Father from the beginning and is God. He has the same essence as God
the Father.
How does this apply to our lives?
We have someone we can count on…a Supreme commander who is in charge of everything and who never “sleeps at the wheel.” We have someone we can go to for everything.
2
The Lord is the Creator…John, Chapter 1, Verse 3…
JOHN 1:3
All things came into being through the Word (the Lord…God the Son) … and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
This is self-explanatory. There is nothing you can think of that doesn’t come from the Creator except evil.
How does this apply to our lives?
If you are breathing, you were created by God. You owe Him a hearing. At least some of your one hundred and sixty hours per week need to be spent getting to know Him.
3
The Lord came to earth to save us…John, Chapter 1, Verse 14…
JOHN 1:14
And the Word became flesh (He took on human form as Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah) and He lived among us here on earth…and we apostles saw His glory with our own eyes…the glory of the only begotten One from God the Father…full of grace and full of truth.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the unique Person of the universe. We call His trip to earth The Incarnation. His Deity took on human form. He is fully God and fully man in one Person. He is unique and there is no One like Him.
The Lord’s thirty-three years on earth are the Dispensation of the Hypostatic Union, a transition period from the Old Testament to a New Testament. The Lord Jesus Christ fulfills the Mosaic Law, and then welcomes all His creatures into a new relationship free from the stodgy and meaningless rites and rituals that have no spiritual value except to point to the way of freedom through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
How does this apply to our lives?
Why would anyone ever consider settling for a God that was lesser than the Lord Jesus Christ? Satan, the enemy of God, offers religion to the human race…a deceptive, watered-down counterfeit of the richness of the true God’s system of grace and truth.
4
The Lord has many titles…John, Chapter 1, Verse 29…
JOHN 1:29
The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
The Lord Jesus Christ is the sacrificial Lamb, sent by God the Father to handle the sin problem Adam passed on to the whole human race. He was slaughtered at the Cross for our benefit. The title Lamb of God was easily recognizable by those who studied the Old Testament.
How does this apply to our lives?
Would you recognize the Lord if He took on human form again and you were having a conversation with Him?
5
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Light…John, Chapter 1, Verse 5…
JOHN 1:5 (Phillips)
The Light keeps on shining in the darkness and the darkness is not no way…not no
how…not EVER able to put the Light out.
The Lord Jesus Christ came to illuminate the deceptions in Satan’s kingdom.
How does this apply to our lives?
Do you have the spiritual discernment to see Satan’s traps as a result of your study of the Word of God? Do you avoid the traps or do you embrace them?
6
The unbeliever’s response to the Light is rejection and rebellion…John, Chapter 1, Verse 11…
JOHN 1:11
The Lord…God the Son…came to His own (the unbelieving Jews) … and those who were His own did not receive Him (in fact, they rejected Him).
Unbelievers have no desire to come to the Light because their evil deeds are exposed by the Light.
How does this apply to our lives?
Don’t be schtoopid! Come to the cleansing of the Light!
When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering, and then we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

OFFERING INTRODUCTION
King David asks an interesting question in Psalm 116, Verse 12…
PSALM 116:12
What shall I give to the Lord in repayment for all His goodness toward me?
What can we, mere humans, give to the Almighty, All-Powerful, All-Sufficient God? The Lord wants us to give the things He gifts to us…our time…our talent… and our treasure for the benefit of others. The offering is the treasure part. It’s your chance to redirect the funds God has given to you to help others. Give with an abundance mentality! Whatever you give the Lord will multiply to others AND He’ll multiply it back to you.
Let’s welcome up my faithful friend and Deacon…Denny Goodall…with one of his always thoughtful…always deep…always clever…always inspiring offering messages.

THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION
At the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ Gave Us His Word
Welcome to The Lord’s Supper Celebration, the most intimate expression of our love for the Lord Jesus Christ in The Christian Way of Living.
The Lord demonstrates His desire for a deep, intimate, and personal relationship with His believers by creating a way to keep on sharing His body and His blood with us, just as He did with His apostles on the night before His death. Luke, Chapter 22, Verses 14 to 16…
LUKE 22:14
When the hour had come and His crucifixion was near… the Lord Jesus Christ reclined at the Passover table…and the apostles reclined with Him.
LUKE 22:15
And the Lord said to the apostles, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer…”
LUKE 22:16
“…for I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to you that I shall never again eat this
Passover meal until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God the Father.”
In First Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verse 26, the apostle Paul says, on behalf of the Lord…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:26a
…as often as you eat this bread (representing His body) … and as often as you drink this cup (representing His blood) … as part of the Lord’s Supper Celebration…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 11:26b
…you proclaim as a reality and you announce the significance of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross…and His resurrection from the dead…until He comes again at the second coming.
During the Lord’s Supper Celebration, Jesus wants His believers to REMEMBER. We look back to the Cross for a moment and we REMEMBER how the Lord rescued us from the kingdom of darkness. We REMEMBER the Lord’s sacrifice of shedding His blood to cover our sins. We REMEMBER the gift of the resurrection life the Lord orchestrated, bringing us into His kingdom of light. We REMEMBER with anticipation that the Lord is coming again.
As believers in Christ, when we celebrate The Lord’s Supper, we ask ourselves in reflection, “What did the Lord Jesus Christ do for us at the Cross?”
At the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ gave us His Word. Let’s enjoy the elements and then we’ll continue our reflection on the lessons of the first three chapters of the Gospel of John.
THE LORD’S SUPPER CELEBRATION
Enjoying the Elements
Bread and wine.
The Lord gave us these things to remember Him. We will enjoy the elements together in a few moments as we listen to The Lord’s Supper Song.
Obeying God's command, we keep on celebrating CHRIST and His Cross regularly. We eat to remember who He is as a PERSON…we drink to remember His WORK on the Cross, the voluntary sacrifice He made on our behalf as our sin sacrifice.
We are grateful for what God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ have done for us. Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 26 to 28…
MATTHEW 26:26
While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take…eat…this is My body which is being broken for you.”
MATTHEW 26:27
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you…”
MATTHEW 26:28
“…for this is My blood…the blood of a new covenant…blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of their sins.”
As you enjoy the bread and the wine, enjoy the memory of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well.
Now and always, let us keep on giving thanks that we are loved unconditionally and accepted fully by a Lord who is always there for us…the One on whom we depend…and let’s keep on being transformed by His life, His death, His resurrection from the dead, and His Word…and let’s enjoy His unconditional love, His forgiveness, and His grace.
Enjoy the elements as we hear a song from the musical Godspell with a simple and powerful message.
THE LORD’S SUPPER SONG
PREPARE YE
Godspell
My question for all of you on the tail end of that song is…are ye preparing the way of the Lord? In other words, have you taken the time to establish a relationship with the Sovereign God of the Universe and the Savior of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ? If you haven’t, get busy! In the next part of the lesson, you’ll learn how.
LESSON PART TWO
Welcome back!
What else did we learn from the first three chapters of the Gospel of John? In John, Chapter 2…
7
The Lord initiated the transition from the Old Testament to a completely New Testament. His first SIGN at the Wedding Feast at Cana announced the transition. John, Chapter 2, Verses 9 and 10…
JOHN 2:9
When the headwaiter tasted the water (which had become wine)…he did not know where the wine came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew)…and the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him…
JOHN 2:10
“Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely (losing their ability to discern) then he serves the poorer wine…but you have kept the good wine until now.”
The Lord kept the “good wine” of the New Testament until last. He used the Old Testament to prepare the world for the Lord’s coming. When the time was right, the Lord introduced a New Testament established by the Cross as He paid for the sin of the while world. Then God the Holy Spirit’s power lead all of us into all the truth.
How does this apply to our lives?
As believers in Christ, we must keep on resisting the trappings of the old self while simultaneously letting God the Holy Spirit change us, so we exploit the new creation the Lord has made us.
Also in John, Chapter 2…
8
The Lord cleansed the Temple making it clear God the Father’s house is not a
place for monkey business. The Lord announced that the Temple is not a marketplace, exercising His authority to do so! John, Chapter 2, Verses 14 to 16…
JOHN 2:14
In Jerusalem, in the temple courts, Jesus found those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and He found money changers seated at their tables.
JOHN 2:15
And having made a whip out of cords, Jesus drove them all out of the temple area, both the sheep and the oxen…and He poured out the money changers’ coins and overthrew their tables…
JOHN 2:16
…and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things out from here! Stop making My Father’s house a place of business!”
The Lord Jesus Christ’s concern was that making the Temple a marketplace took up the area where unbelievers could learn about the spiritual life and how to be saved. The Lord was having none if it!
How does this apply to our lives?
We want to avoid anything that interferes with the salvation of others. We avoid being a stumbling block to unbelievers.
In John, Chapter 3…
9
The Lord has a Conversation with the Pharisee Nicodemus about the New Birth…Nicodemus learns salvation comes from God…John, Chapter 3, Verse 3…
JOHN 3:3
Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to you, unless one is born again (born from above…the new birth) he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
In the Lord’s conversation with Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee, Jesus explains that human heritage, legalism, and moral achievement are not enough to enter the Kingdom of God. A person must undergo a spiritual rebirth...John, Chapter 3, Verse 5…
JOHN 3:5
Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water (the water of the word…the Gospel of Jesus Christ) and the (baptism of the) Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
How does this apply to our lives?
We need to BELIEVE what the Lord says about how to be saved. Listening to humans who are teaching lies about salvation can have eternal consequences.
10
The Lord foreshadows the Cross…John, Chapter 3, Verses 14 and 15…
JOHN 3:14
“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up…”
JOHN 3:15
“…so that whosoever believes will in Him have eternal life.”
The way to be saved is to take advantage of what the Lord Jesus Christ did at the Cross. The Lord tells us to believe in Him…we simply follow directions just as those who were bitten by serpents were saved by looking at the serpent Moses lifted up on a standard.
How does this apply to our lives?
Our eternal future depends on our decision for or against Christ. What’s your choice? Will you BELIEVE?
Next…
11
Even while we were His enemies, God the Father chose to demonstrate His LOVE for the world…John, Chapter 3, Verse 16…
JOHN 3:16
“For God the Father loved the world unconditionally and so much…that He gave His only begotten Son (the completely unique One…100% God and 100% Man in One Person) … that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but has eternal life.”
It is God the Father’s will that everyone be saved. The world of unbelievers need to listen.
How does this apply to our lives?
We owe it to ourselves to bask in God’s love for us. Are you as obsessed with God’s love for you as you are with your problems and deficiencies?
Finally, we learn…
12
The Lord’s motivation is to offer the gift of eternal life. John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36
“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
How does this apply to our lives?
We need both to heed the warning and to take advantage of this invitation. God’s motivation is unconditional love for the whole world…for ALL of His creatures… for “whosoever.” He offers rescue from spiritual death and darkness, giving the gift of eternal life…the resurrection life…through believing in His Son…rather than condemnation.
In summary…when we study the Word of God we take the apostle Paul’s advice in Philippians, Chapter 4, Verse 8…
PHILIPPIANS 4:8
Brethren, whatsoever is true, whatsoever is honorable, whatsoever is right, whatsoever is pure, whatsoever is lovely, whatsoever is of good repute, if there is any excellence, and there is…and if there is anything worthy of praise, and there is…let your minds dwell on these things.
Let’s keep your eyes on Jesus and our minds on the study of the Word of God.
THE GOSPEL MESSAGE
The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race
The closing moments of this lesson could be the ten most important minutes of your life. You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. We want you to know that…
GOD WANTS YOU!
He Wants You to Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
The Bible says God is clear-minded…First Corinthians, Chapter 14, Verse 33…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 14:33
…for God is not a God of confusion…
It's true! God is so clear-minded, He works in ones. There is one category of unbelieving angels, the fallen angels; and there is one category of believing angels, the elect angels. Here’s what the Lord has to say about the fallen angels in Jude, Chapter 1, Verse 6…
JUDE 1:6
And the fallen angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day…
Here’s what the Lord says about the elect angels. Matthew, Chapter 24, Verse 31…
MATTHEW 24:31
And the Lord will send forth His elect angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect believers from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
The Lord categorizes His human creatures the same way, the elect and the fallen.
The Lord wants you to be one of the elect!
The bad news is you were born fallen. You were born physically alive but
spiritually dead as a fallen, ungodly, unrighteous unbeliever. You were born a
sinner in God’s eyes, in desperate need of a Savior.
IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT you were born this way, but it is your circumstance.
In First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 the Bible says…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a
For all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being who comes to earth) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…
The good news is that the Lord Jesus Christ knew you could not work your way out of this circumstance, so He decided to work everything out for you.
GOD WANTS YOU!
It’s a great thing to know, because no one gets out of this life alive. What’s going to happen to you when you close your eyes in this life? Will you go to heaven or will you go to hell? Will you remain fallen or will you choose to be elect?
God doesn’t want you to go to hell! Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…
SECOND PETER 3:9
The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation, as some accuse Him of... instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any to perish (in the Lake of Fire) but for all to come to repentance (a voluntary change of mind about
having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).
The Lord has a plan to make you one of the elect so He can welcome you to heaven! So, how can you get to heaven? RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT you can tell God the Father you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that’s the moment of eternal life for you. Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…
ACTS 16:31
“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
The ONE WAY…the ONLY WAY to get to heaven is through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ…in John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…
JOHN 14:6
Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (through the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”
Getting to heaven requires nothing of you except the expression of your faith in Jesus Christ to save you. You can’t work your way to heaven.
Who is this God who saves you? The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3
For I (Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I
also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according
to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4
…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
Believing in Jesus Christ is your acknowledgment that you can’t do a thing
to be elect on your own. Also, you confirm that being fallen WILL NOT get you to heaven. So it’s wiser to let God make you one of His elect, because once God does something, He never changes His mind! John, Chapter 10, Verses 28 and 29 say…
JOHN 10:28
“…I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life to believers in Christ, and they will never perish…and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”
JOHN 10:29
And My Father…who gives believers in Christ to Me…is greater than all…and no one is able to snatch elect believers in Christ out of God the Father’s hand, either.|
Acts, Chapter 4, Verse 12 says…
ACTS 4:12
“…there is salvation in no one else…for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”
What if you reject a relationship with Christ? Matthew, Chapter 13, Verses 40 to 42 communicate the consequences…
MATTHEW 13:40
…just as weeds are gathered up and burned with fire…so shall it be at the end of the age.
MATTHEW 13:41
The Son of Man (Jesus Christ) will send forth His elect angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks (unbelievers)…and those who commit lawlessness (unbelievers)…
MATTHEW 13:42
…and the elect angels will throw (the fallen) unbelievers into the furnace of fire (The Lake of Fire)…and in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Yes…there is a hell…and if you end up there it will be your choice. So make the most important choice of your life! So take the invitation and heed the warning in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36
“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
Make the best decision for you! Be an elect one, not a fallen one.
